These Wedding Dresses Were Made Entirely Out Of Toilet Paper — And They're Surprisingly Chic

You may have always dreamed of your wedding dress being crafted from the finest silk charmeuse or a painstakingly-detailed Italian white lace. But whatever bridal fabric you’ve set your mind on, we highly doubt you ever would have thought toilet paper could be defined as a “chic” wedding dress material. Yet, after an incredible Toilet Paper Wedding Dress competition that’s put on by Cheap Chic Weddings every year, our perception of the bathroom essential has completely changed. And guess what? These stunning creations cost thousands less than your fave designer gown, although we’re not certain how comfortable they would be if worn all day long…

But regardless of their comfort level, we’re seriously stunned by the creativity and skill the competitors showed in the Charmin-sponsored event. According to ABC News, “The months-long process of creating and voting ended Thursday in New York City when the winner was announced and awarded with the $10,000 prize.”

Not too shabby for a dress made (almost) entirely out of TP! And when we say almost entirely, it all comes down to the materials used to keep the dress intact, like tape, glue, or needle and thread. One more catch? It has to be able to be worn by a human and be able to be taken off — quite a challenge for a material that’s so delicate. But after you take a look at the winning dress, and all of the stunning contenders, you’ll be giving these designers a major standing ovation.

The winning dress (above), which legitimately looks like a gown taken straight out of a bridal magazine, features a lacy pattern and feathered tufts on the skirt. The top features an intricate cage capelet for the fashion-forward bride.

All of the other finalists:

Ruffled toilet paper? So IN.

A skin-tight mermaid gown to show off your womanly curves? Bey would totally approve.

A dress fit for a queen.

A modern sunhat for your big day? Ummm, hello chic!

Winter nuptials? No problem. Just add a fluffy vest.

No beach-ready wedding dress is complete without ocean-like waves.

Four words — crop until you drop.

This bride is channeling her inner Mother Mary — perfect for a church wedding!

Is this a wedding dress or an owl?!

Lupita Nyong'o, Allison Williams, and Michelle Williams Bring Bridal Style to the Tony's Red Carpet

Lupita Nyong’o was a fresh breath of late Spring air in florals, Allison Williams demonstrated the power of the jumpsuit, and Michelle Williams kept it classic in black and white. Here, the red carpet looks we couldn’t get enough of this week.

Lupita Nyong’o at the 70th Annual Tony Awards: Florals are perfect for the Spring or Summer, though the print is classic and can actually be worn year-round. Lupita Nyong’o made a case for the colorful pattern this week—clad in an on-trend, off-the-shoulder BOSS gown with allover sequin embellishment. If you’re known for your love of flowers or want to opt for a non-traditional dress, then this is the look for you. And her natural hair, flawless skin, and timeless jewelry let the number play centerstage, while simultaneously amplifying her natural beauty.

Allison Williams at the 70th Annual Tony Awards: We can’t profess our love for a white jumpsuit any louder. It’s truly one of the most chic ways to do bridal and with each year, designers think of all new iterations of the silhouette. Allison Williams wore a custom-made, tuxedo-inspired design from DKNY: something about this look gave us total engagement party in NYC vibes. And her sleek hair and grey, handheld clutch only furthered the modern aesthetic of the ensemble—ideal for the fashion-forward bride with an edge.

Michelle Williams at the 70th Annual Tony Awards: A woman can never go wrong with Louis Vuitton—especially if the iconic French fashion house is giving you the chance to slip into one of its gorgeous gowns. Bold details are usually the mark of LV’s designs, but Michelle Williams’s white stunner this week was a study in simplicity and elegance: contrast skinny black straps, a plunging neckline, flattering ruching, and a thigh-high front slit. This is the wedding gown for the modern bride and Michelle’s black accessories only further proved that. Her red lips injected a nice pop of color, but nude would be just as powerful.

When she described the big day to US Weekly, it seemed like everything was absolutely perfect. “Oh gosh — [Eddie’s] so handsome and then he was in that tux,” she reminisced. “In the three and a half years I’ve known Eddie, I’ve never seen him cry. Real Brides Reveal How They Personalized Their Weddings

When you spend over a year planning for the biggest day of your life, you want it to reflect who you are as a couple. And it comes to aesthetics, those personal touches should be incorporated into your day in whatever way makes you feel excited and proud. For a little day-of inspo, we’re sharing seven enterprising brides’ stories about how they succeeded at putting a very personal stamp on their wedding day.

“We used our surprise party tradition to make the event uniquely
‘us’.” My (then) boyfriend told all our friends he was planning to propose and wanted everyone to be there to celebrate with us. When they turned up to the proposal site, it was a wedding! It was extraordinary to see the rush of emotions as people realized what was happening. It was the perfect way to capture our playful spirit as a couple and create a moment no one will forget! — Katie

“I got married in Atlanta about three and a half years ago. When we exchanged rings during the ceremony, in lieu of
saying something to the effect of, ‘With this ring, I thee wed,’ we exchanged rings and promised to be thunder buddies for life (a reference to the movie Ted). We later recited the proper language in front of a judge in private to make it official.” —Leah

“The traditional father daughter dance became a father/mother/daughter dance. My mother was diagnosed with an illness right before our wedding and I felt like she needed to be included in this special moment in time. There were no dry eyes to say the least.” —Sara

“I found out after announcing the wedding date to my family that none of my five aunts had ever been bridesmaids. They were in their fifties and sixties and told me how they had always wanted to be in a wedding but had never been asked to do so. I loved my aunts dearly, so I made them honorary bridesmaids–complete with dresses, flowers…Some of my other close family members and friends asked if they could be honorary bridesmaids too. I said ‘yes,’ and the party was on! In all, I had 15 honorary bridesmaids, nine “regular” ones, and some very happy aunts who talked about their experience for years.” —Stephanie

“My husband and I had a small and intimate wedding (about 50 guests), and decided to forgo the iconic mother/son, father/daughter, and couple dances. We simply wanted to enjoy the night. Far into our
reception, my husband and I realized we had a rare moment alone, walked to an empty corner, and danced for the first time as man and wife. It was such a gift to experience that special moment in a peaceful setting — one that was free from the (wonderful and well-meaning, but at times, overwhelming) attention of all our guests!” —Ashley

“For our wedding we used two Carvel Fudgie the Whale cakes – a bride and groom.” —Taryn

“We bought a house in the Pasadena area and were inexplicably gifted with two baby chicks from sellers. (I’m from NYC…what the ^&*+% did I know about chickens?) I ended up falling madly in love with them, and our flock soon grew to five. Got engaged. Planned wedding back East but, as a later in life bride, felt too mature to wear the poufy standard bridal veil. I also wanted to creatively incorporate my beloved chickens into my wedding the way people incorporate their dogs and cats. Solution? I made an alternative bridal headpiece out of my hens’ gorgeous, naturally molted feathers. I combined the plumes with organza petals, pearl sprays and ostrich feathers for a light-as-air effect. In doing so, I had my ‘girls’ with me but not in a jokey, silly way. I created an elegant, meaningful and unique hair ornament that was perfect and personal. People went crazy over the non-traditional plumed fascinator and began requesting similar ones. The whole experience prompted me to change careers mid-life and launch my company, The Feathered Head offering online and custom bridal and cocktail party headpieces incorporating feathers, vintage jewelry, crystals and other interesting embellishments. I still can’t believe that my chicken feather headpiece, so personal and memorable to me, literally changed my life 180 degrees!” —Andie

5 Reasons Big Budget Wedding Flowers Are Absolutely Worth The Splurge

Why-Pricy-Wedding-Flowers-Are-Worth-It.jpg

Photo: Saul Metnick

Of course, you can get the look for less, but isn’t the real thing always better? We think so! As if you needed another reason to pick peonies for your wedding day, here are five reasons that’ll leave you completely convinced as to why those big-budget wedding flowers are really worth every penny.

1. Because you get what you pay for!
When you deal with less expensive flowers, unfortunately you usually find yourself with lower end design work and less attention to detail (although not always), notes Bronwen Smith, lead designer and owner of B Floral. A lot of time you also end up with more greenery, which can be a good or bad thing, depending on the specific look you’re after. For this reason, Smith recommends keeping in mind the amount of greenery you’d like, versus what would be unwantedly added because of a misdirected floral budget. “Perhaps it goes without saying that a big investment should always be carefully considered and that, more often than not, high cost equals high quality,” adds floral expert Caroline Bailly, owner of L’Atelier Rouge.

2. You have more options.
Like anything else, there are different levels of flowers. And with a bigger budget, you’ll not only have a wider variety of florals available to you, but a better selection on the higher end of the spectrum as well, points out Smith.

3. Pricy flowers typically take up more space and make a bigger impact.
Did you know that pricy, higher end flowers usually take up more space than less expensive ones? According to Smith, it’s true! “For example, a peony takes up more space in a bridal bouquet as opposed to a carnation, meaning more bang for your buck.” Bailly seconds this. “Peonies may prove pricy,” she says, “but many of their varietals, especially in peak season, have rather large heads, so the florist needs less of them when putting together arrangements.”

4. They’re a work of art.
Smith suggests thinking of your floral arrangements and bouquets as a work of art. And the better the art, the higher the cost, right? “These are what people are going to notice on tablescapes, bars, as well as in your wedding photos.” If you’re investing in the venue, the dress and everything else, you’ll want to make sure that all of that investment is captured, stresses Bailly. “Flowers help create and shape the feel of the reception room, the wedding altar and even your bridal portraits.”

5. It’s your wedding, and you deserve to treat yourself!
Set the tone for your marriage and beautiful things to come with an ambiance that reflects the relationship you have and want, says Smith. “It’s a once in a lifetime chance to be over the top.” So go ahead and splurge and treat yourself to the best of the best!

Remember: A seasoned florist is worth her weight in gold!!!
Almost anyone can source beautiful, high quality flowers, but not everyone can arrange them in a beautiful, high quality way, warns Bailly. “Many flowers that come at higher price points are absolutely worth the extra expense, provided that they’re being designed in a manner that truly highlights their special qualities and not just added to a mass of flowers where what makes them meaningful might be camouflaged.

Julianne Hough Just Got Real About Wedding Planning

Julianne Hough Wedding Planning Woes

Wedding planning while working your regular nine-to five is tough enough, but just imagine doing it between endless rehearsals, memorizing scripts and choreography, and pirouetting on live TV every week! ‘Tis the life of bride-to-be Julianne Hough, whose crazy schedule doesn’t allot much time for planning her wedding to Canadian hockey player Brooks Laich. Sure, she probably has a list of celeb-approved wedding planners at her disposal — or could maybe recruit her Dancing with the Stars co-stars for help! — but this bride-to-be is in no rush. At a recent red carpet event, Hough got real about how those wedding day plans are shaping up — slowly, oh so slowly…

The Dancing with the Stars pro had originally planned to wed her hunky hockey sweetheart this summer, after getting engaged last August. But because of their constantly conflicting schedules and just the sheer feat of figuring out all of the wedding day details (we know you all feel her pain…), the pair still has yet to choose a date! And they sound a-okay with waiting a little longer to tie the knot. “We might get married in 10 years,” Hough joked with Entertainment Tonight. “Who knows?” Um, please don’t scare us like that, Hough! We don’t think we can wait 10 years to see you all decked out in white.

While we know it probably won’t take years for these two cuties to tie the knot, they’re definitely taking a more chilled-out approach to tackling that mountain of planning. “We started [wedding planning] and were like, ‘You know what? Let’s just chill and enjoy the engagement process and the fun of it,'” Hough continued to Us Weekly. “So we haven’t really got into it really. We’re kind of terrible.” Not terrible! Understandable… Brides-to-be are their own type of superhero after all, fearlessly tackling everything from diabolical mother-in-laws to villainous vendors. And we totally get that Hough and her almost-hubby need to slow down their walk to the aisle.

So now with a wedding-free summer ahead of them, does this engaged duo have any special plans? “We finally get to actually be in the same city, so that’s nice,” Hough said. “So we’re just chilling at the house, cooking dinner, hanging out by the pool and relaxing.” Ahhh, now that sounds much less stressful than planning a wedding! But for when the big day finally does arrive, Hough does a few ideas… “It’s mainly just friends and family,” the star said of the guest list. “We’re keeping it pretty small and intimate.” We hope that still includes us!

Claire Danes, Joan Smalls, and Lupita Nyong'o Tony Looks Give Major Bridal Beauty Inspiration

claire danes joan smalls lupita nyong'o

Photo: Getty Images

Claire Danes shows us all how to get the perfect summer glow, Joan Smalls stuns in a red smokey eye, and Lupita Nyong’o rocks the perfect combination of coral and navy.

Claire Danes: To copy Claire Danes’s Tony Awards look, summer brides can give themselves a boost in the proverbial glow direction by starting with a faux tan. Go to an experienced airbrush tanner who can ensure your face and body are the same shade and look natural. Then, on the day of the wedding, start your makeup with a lightweight foundation and use a bronze color stick to add more warmth across your cheekbones and along the bridge of the nose. Use a shimmery blue eyeshadow on the upper lids, and then apply several coats of mascara. A glossy, raspberry lip, and you’re the perfect sun-kissed bride!

Joan Smalls: Go for a daring bridal, or bachelorette party, look and embrace the color of love á la Joan Smalls. After perfecting your complexion with foundation, use a bronzer along your cheekbones to provide definition. Then, for those dramatic eyes, begin by tightlining, and then get ready to layer. To get that smokey red eye, you’ll want to layer purple and reds to get varying depths of color. Work your way all the way around the eyes, keeping the darker color in the outer corners and in the crease, and make sure you apply it in an almond shape, so you have an almost cat eye shape to the shadow. Once you’re done, apply individual faux lashes and coat the top and bottom lashes generously with mascara. And be sure to groom your brows flawlessly, as all attention will be on your eyes! A glossy nude lip accentuates the look, but doesn’t compete with the eyes for attention.

Lupita Nyong’o: Always one to embrace a bold look, Lupita Nyong’o is excellent inspiration for any bride who wants to add some interest to her bridal beauty look. First, use a matte foundation to ensure you don’t have any shine where you don’t want it, and then go back in and add a highlighter on all the high points of the face. Opt for a coral blush on the apples of the cheeks, and use a similar shade of glossy lipstick. Tightline the eyes with a navy liner and use a navy or midnight blue shade (depending on your skin tone) of eyeshadow from the upper lash line to the crease. A few coats of mascara, and you’re done — this is a fairly low maintenance approach to color!
