6 Important Questions to Ask Before You Decide to Have Kids

before baby

Having kids with someone can have a huge impact on your relationship, regardless of how you plan to bring the child into the world. Whether you’re getting pregnant, adopting, or using any other method, there are a few things you need to agree on before you can go about raising a child together — and discussing them in advance can prevent some big arguments down the line. Here are a few conversations experts say you should have with your partner before you plan a family together.

1. Is the timing right? Fertility specialist Jane Frederick, M.D., says her patients don’t always time their first pregnancies thoughtfully. For example, some couples will have kids later in life and struggle with fertility, which could have been prevented by freezing their eggs and sperm in advance. It’s important to think about what your goals are and whether or not they can coexist with a family right now. If they can’t, you might want to consider freezing your eggs so that getting pregnant is easier when you’re ready.

2. Do you both actually want this now? It might seem like if you’ve both agreed to have kids, you’re both totally on board. But in some relationships, one person will really want a kid right this moment and the other will be less sure but go along with it, says therapist Maria Bruce, LMHC, NCC, founder of Thanks You Made My Day and Maria Bruce Wellness. It’s worth asking yourselves whether you’d both want this kid now if the other didn’t, as well as if you’re feeling any external pressure from your parents or anyone else outside the relationship.

3. Who can help out? “The famous saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ is very true,” says Bruce. “Every parent can relate to being sleepless, incredibly tired, and in dire need of a break.” Jessica Wade, MAMFT, LPCC, agrees. “Couples who fail to plan for back-up help get burnt out,” she says. So, think about friends, family members, or services you might enlist to pick up the slack when parenting gets to be too much for you. Chances are, you’ll be grateful for them later.

4. Who will take on what responsibilities? Since having a child is a huge time commitment, it’ll help you both to know in advance what exactly you’re committing to, says Wade. Planning meals, waking up with the baby at night, driving them to childcare, and paying for their diapers, food, clothes, and toys are just a few tasks you’ll want to divvy up. Speaking of which…

5. How will you pay for everything? According to Wade, you’ll need to budget at least an extra $2,000/month for child care, food, clothing, and saving for your child’s future. Think about how much everything will cost and consider whether you can realistically put that much aside and how you will. After all, you want to bring your child into a world that welcomes them as much as possible, which means being prepared on every front.

6. What role will your parents have in your kids’ lives? When you have kids, estranged parents and annoying in-laws are no longer just your problem. You have to decide who you want in your kids’ lives and what role you want them to play, says psychotherapist Tina Gilbertson, LPC, DCC. If you have an ongoing conflict with your parents or your partner’s parents, it may be worth resolving so that you can model a good parent-child relationship for your kids.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's Wedding Video Reveals the Epic Surprise He Gave to His Wife on Their Big Day

Lin-Manuel Miranda Wedding Video

You may not be able to score tickets to see the super popular musical Hamilton anytime soon (trust us, we’ve been trying for months…), but we’ll settle for watching the show’s creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda’s sweet wedding serenade. Yes, once upon time, the Tony award winner was a wedding singer — at his own nuptials! In a now viral video posted by the man himself, Miranda surprised his bride at their 2010 wedding with totally Broadway-worthy performance. Seriously, there’s choreography and everything. We wish this was an option at the box office!

If you watched the Tony Awards on Sunday night, you may recall Lin-Manuel Miranda’s acceptance speech for his Best Original Score win was in the form of a sentimental sonnet, which included a too-sweet shoutout to his wife, Vanessa. “My wife’s the reason anything gets done. She nudges me towards promise by degrees. She is a perfect symphony of one. Our son is her most beautiful reprise,” he read out. Cue the exploding hearts everywhere. But, while that was enough to make us swoon, we’re deeming Miranda’s over-the-top wedding performance at his “I dos” worth the price of a Hamilton ticket!

“My surprise for my wife Vanessa Nadal on our wedding day,” reads the video description. “All of Vanessa’s close friends and family rehearsed for a month in secret, leading up to the reception. What we lack in polish, we hopefully make up for in joy and love.” The video starts off with Vanessa’s father giving a toast at their wedding reception. He calls up his new son-in-law to say a few words and, before you know it, their conversation seamlessly transitions into a song — Fiddler on the Roof‘s “To Life.” Before long, the entire wedding party is up on the dance floor, singing along and pulling off a pretty epic dance routine, with l’chaim‘s left and right and even a kickline! Meanwhile, the clearly shocked bride looks on, flabbergasted with a mile-wide smile.

“Everyone in this video has one thing in common,” the video description continues. “We’d do anything to show Vanessa how much we love her.” L’chaim to that!

Can I Go Wedding Dress Shopping With My Fiancé?

Chances are you view your fiancé as your ultimate partner in crime, best friend, and go-to person when you’re in the middle of making a decision and need an honest, unbiased, and trustworthy opinion. Together, you both have had to face making small decisions together, like where to go to dinner and what movie to watch on a Friday night, to even bigger ones, like where to live or even the type of wedding you want to have.

So when it comes time to making one of the biggest staple decisions of your big day, what wedding dress you should wear, you may have an urge to bring your fiancé along for the dress shopping process.

It’s important to know that there’s no official rule that the wedding dress you wear on your wedding day has to be a secret from your fiancé until your walk down the aisle Most brides like to keep that as a surprise, but you don’t have to. You can sit, for hours, with your fiancé and look up dresses on Pinterest together, until you start to find a style that makes your eyes bulge with happiness. You can even bring him along with you to multiple stores and try on more dresses than you can count until you find the right one, together.

If you do want to keep a certain level of secrecy when it comes to your wedding dress, you can go browsing with your fiancé, see what styles catch his eye, and then leave him at home when you go back and try on dresses to find the one that you love the best.

But in the end, it’s up to you who you want in your wedding dress selection process.

Mila Kunis Is Pregnant! She and Ashton Kutcher Are Expecting Their Second Child

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Kiss Cam

Just weeks before their one-year wedding anniversary, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are spilling some majorly exciting news — the couple, who is already parents to 20-month-old daughter Wyatt Isabelle, are expecting their second child!

“Ashton genuinely lights up when talking about Wyatt and the little one on the way,” a source close to Kutcher told People, who exclusively broke the news of the Hollywood A-lister’s second pregnancy late Wednesday night. “Everything about being a father is natural to him.”

Just last month, Kunis revealed on a special Mother’s Day edition of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she and her hubby of just over a year were trying for their second baby. Have y’all seen how how absurdly adorable their 19-month-old Wyatt Isabelle is? Just imagine another one of those tiny tots running around…

“Are you trying?” DeGeneres asked the actress, who was sitting next to her Bad Moms co-star, Kristen Bell. “Like am I having sex, Ellen?” Kunis hilariously replied. “Yeah, are you having sex? That’s my question. I want to know how often you’re having sex,” inquired the talkshow host.

Blushing and giggling, Kunis immediately turned to Bell for help, but she wasn’t letting her friend off the hook! “How’s the sex?” asked Bell. (Can you blame the girl for being curious?) “Yeah, it’s great,” Kunis finally revealed in between fits of laughter.

It seems like just yesterday news broke of Kunis and Kutcher’s secret wedding over 4th of July 2015 weekend, saying their “I dos” in a top secret, garden-themed ceremony. Taking place in a serene and secluded ranch outside of Los Angeles, the day ended with luxury camping on the ceremony grounds for all of the couples’ wedding guests.

The idea of two small kids running around might be a tough transition for most newlyweds, but Kunis told Entertainment Tonight in May that she’s mastered the “balancing act” of being “a great partner, a great wife and a great woman.”

“I know that when we decided to have a kid, we were ready to no longer be selfish — at least start the process,” the expectant mom said. “Because innately, as humans, we’re very selfish people, and we really wanted to have a family.”

She added, “Having this little human to raise … it was a balancing act, and then you learn how to be a great partner, and a great wife, and a great woman, and be yourself, and still be responsible for a living child. It’s definitely a learning process.”

“She’s the greatest mom,” Kutcher has said of his wife, according to People. “I go to work every day, and I come home and she’s perfect. And it just seems like everything went amazing. And I know that something probably didn’t go amazing, but she never tells … it’s unbelievable. She’s incredible.”

Are You a Beach Bride? These 7 Wedding Dresses Are For You

If the aisle of your impending wedding is made of white, soft sand, and your ceremony backdrop consists of roaring ocean waves, then you’ve come to the right page. As if wedding dress shopping isn’t overwhelming enough, choosing the right dress for a beach wedding is no easy task. Since the venue is typically more casual and the weather is warmer, there are a few extras to consider before saying yes to your dream beach wedding dress.

Light, airy, and delicate should refine your search. Look for fabrics and silhouettes that won’t weigh you down and will keep you feeling cool and calm in the heat. Think a streamlined silhouette and shorter train — or skip the train altogether; the less volume, the better. Stray toward lighter fabrics like silk, chiffon, and organza. And if you’re jetting off to a tropical island for a destination wedding, keep in mind how well the dress will travel — some fabrics wrinkle more easily than others.

And don’t forget about the venue — a private beach along the French Riviera gives you a little more leeway to rock a more dazzled gown than a low-key affair on a Caribbean island for which a simpler, strapless sheath gown may be more well-suited.

If you still can’t decide which way to go, these seven dresses from the Spring 2017 collections are sure to give you a bit of beachy inspiration.

This Bride Performed CPR On a Complete Stranger — On Her Wedding Day

It’s almost impossible to anticipate what exactly will go down on your wedding day. We’ve seen situations range from the ring bearer misplacing the wedding bands, or the officiant running hours late. And one situation a bride from Pittsburgh most definitely didn’t see coming? Having to perform CPR on a complete stranger — in her wedding dress, no less.

Right after she said her “I do’s,” Julie Stroyne Nixon headed to the hotel where her reception was taking place to check in with her wedding party. As she began to cross the street, she heard someone scream, “Does anyone know CPR? Is anyone a doctor?” ABC News reported. What the bride saw as she got closer to the scene was a woman on a bench right outside of the hotel, struggling to breathe.

“My nursing instincts just took over,” Nixon, a trauma nurse at UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, told the news website. “To be honest I don’t remember running. I just threw my purse and my flowers and just went into action.” Eeeek, not the expensive bouquet!

On a day that was supposed to be all about her and her new husband, this selfless bride ended up saving a life — and in her wedding dress, no less! Thankfully, she was able to resuscitate the unresponsive woman before EMT and ambulance workers showed up to the scene, and described the frenzy by saying, “Somebody told me she didn’t have a pulse so I jumped into action and started doing compressions. It got stronger as I kept feeling for it which was a good sign. Her respirations were very shallow, but I think the action of me giving compressions kind of woke her up.”

The newlyweds haven’t gotten word on whether or not the woman Nixon performed CPR on is OK, but she’s just glad she could do her part to help. For now, the tennis-enthusiasts are off to Wimbledon next week for their honeymoon before heading over to Greece for a sun-soaked vacay. Which, TBH, is so well deserved.

Everything You Need to Know Before Throwing an All-White Wedding

White bridesmaids dresses

Photo: Kate Headley

It’s been popular lately to assign a color theme to a wedding, and ask your guests to dress in the color of your choice. “White weddings,” where everybody (wedding party and guests) wears white, are also trendy, especially in tropical destinations. My clients who have had color-themed weddings all said they did it for the monochrome pictures, which they’ve seen featured everywhere and loved.

However, there are some realities to a “white wedding” that should not be overlooked by the bride and groom when they do their planning.

First and foremost, you need to make sure that all of the guests understand what the attire is. It’s never safe to assume anything for a wedding. Especially when you’re asking literally everyone to break with etiquette and wear the bride’s color of the day to her wedding. While traditionally, putting “formal” or “semi-formal” on the invitation is sufficient guidance, you have to take it a step further when you’re telling your guests what color you want them to wear.

If your invitation is non-traditional and includes a lot of information about your wedding, you should definitely include it there. You can phrase it one of the following ways:

The bride and groom request that all guests wear white attire to their wedding ceremony and reception.

It’s a White Wedding — Please embrace the theme and wear something white!

Reality Check: No matter how well you explain your “white wedding” theme to your family and guests, not everybody is going to wear all white. In fact, the vast majority of your gentlemen guests will wear khaki pants and a white shirt. And most likely no man outside the wedding party will have white shoes, unless you encourage them to wear sneakers. “White only” becomes white-from-the-waist-up to most of the men. Those who are willing to wear white pants probably already own some, and will rock them with their white shoes.

If you’re having an outside, sunset wedding, beware of see-through fabrics! You won’t want dress your groomsmen in linen pants that become see through, for example, and make sure bridesmaids’ dresses are lined. While a cool linen shift may be exactly the look you’re going for, be certain the dress is ALL the guests will be seeing during the ceremony. Make sure to remind your entire wedding party to wear only white or nude undergarments so nothing shows under the lights during pictures.

Lastly, don’t get upset if some of your guests forget the dress code. Don’t be surprised if some guests are wearing white with a pattern (if they’ve got a clue, they’ll make a point to step out of some of your formal group photos so the color theme isn’t ruined). Don’t be disappointed, or annoyed, to see men not wearing white pants and shoes. When a wedding isn’t black tie, most men don’t see the need to purchase a new outfit they’ll literally never wear again for one day. Expect (and hope for) bright white shirts and you’ll be pleasantly surprised if everybody remembers.

Perks of Having an Off-Season Caribbean Wedding and Honeymoon

sandals-caribbean-off-season.jpg

Photo: Getty Images

One major perk of planning a destination wedding and honeymoon in the Caribbean in the off-season is beating the crowds — meaning more beach chairs for you and better hotel deals for you and your wedding guests.

Best Deals
If you’ve been eying a certain luxe suite, you’ll find more availability (at a lower rate) during the low-season months between September and December. Shoulder season is not only a great time to snag hotel deals, it’s also when you’ll find lower airfare, making your destination wedding or honeymoon even more valuable. Sandals Resorts, for example, offers great deals dedicated to fall weddings and even the chance to do a honeymoon “Sneak Peek” trip during the fall.

Sunny Skies & Clear Nights
One of the reasons the Caribbean is ideal during the fall and winter months, is because it’s perfect for hosting an al fresco event. While there’s a possibility of afternoon showers or “liquid sunshine” as they call it in the Caribbean, mornings and evenings are typically cooler and clear, making for an ideal wedding set-up (or brunch wedding!).

Dream Date Availability
The Caribbean off-season also just so happens to fall when wedding and honeymoon season is not in full swing during the spring months. While other brides and grooms are vying for their dream date in June at a spot back home, your search will be a lot more worry free, as the calendar is a bit more open for looking to the Caribbean for your destination wedding or honeymoon.

Sunset Ceremonies
The warmth of the Caribbean islands peaks at midday, but just around sunset is the magic hour when the lighting is romantic and the temperature tapers off, making it prime time for the perfect outdoor ceremony or photo shoot. And if you need a ‘Plan B’, make sure your resort also has a number of picturesque indoor and outdoor venues to choose from for your ceremony and reception.
