How Can We Include Family Recipes in Our Wedding?

family recipes in wedding

Photo: Adonye Jaja

From Grandma’s peach pie to your uncle’s famous mashed potatoes, every family has favorite recipes they look forward to digging into at special occasions. And what occasion is more special than a wedding? We asked our experts for a few tips on the best ways to include those family recipes in your wedding celebration.

Adding family recipes to your wedding menu is a great way to personalize your guests’ experience and honor your family’s traditions while you’re at it. If one of your favorite family recipes is a savory dish, talk to your caterer about whether he or she can incorporate it into your dinner menu. Top grilled chicken with your dad’s barbecue sauce, or set out baskets of those biscuits that are always the first thing to go at Thanksgiving dinner. You could also have one of your pre-wedding events, like the rehearsal dinner, be a home-cooked meal and invite your relatives to help you cook up a big batch for everyone to share.

For snacks and sweets, you have a few options. The first is to ask your relatives to help you cook and bake, and include the recipes in your welcome bags. From candy and fudge to cookies and savory crackers, a little bag of homemade treats is a great way to welcome your guests into town. Better yet, tuck in the recipe so guests can replicate it at home! You could also have these packaged treats set out as favors at the end of the night.

If you’re having a dessert table and your aunts or grandma are expert bakers, you could ask them to chip in to help you make cookies and brownies to display alongside slices of wedding cake, or ask your baker if they could scale up the recipe and whip up a few pans for you.

No matter how you incorporate the family recipes in your wedding, be sure to include a note explaining the importance of what guests are being served. If family members helped prepare the food, add a line thanking them for all of their help and hard work, and for making your wedding extra special!

This Woman with Down Syndrome's Reaction to Her Boyfriend Giving Her a Promise Ring Is Amazing

Woman with Down Syndrome's Reaction to Her Boyfriend Giving Her a Promise Ring

In the latest viral video that has stolen our hearts, Ashley Greenhalgh, a woman born with Down Syndrome, was taken by complete surprise when her boyfriend (who was also born with Down Syndrome) presented her with a beautiful diamond promise ring at her 21st birthday/high school graduation celebration. Ashley’s sister, Courtney, posted the joyous video on Facebook urging friends to share the adorableness on their own timelines in the hope that her sis’ reaction would go viral. And after watching the vid ourselves, it’s no surprise that her excitement and squeals have since touched the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people across the globe. Courtney explains in the post:

“On Saturday, June 25th, my family held a luncheon with our closest relatives and friends to celebrate my sister, Ashley’s, 21st birthday and high school reunion. Among the crowd was my sister’s boyfriend, Danny…not only do they both share an unconditional love for one another, they show a genuine app reaction for life on a daily basis. Danny and my sister have been dating for two years and couldn’t be more perfect for each other…[they’ve] talked about getting married in the future; while they know that the timing isn’t right just yet, Danny wanted to go out of his way to let my sister know that he will always be there for her and that he only has eyes for her. Danny saved up his own money from his job to get my sister a diamond promise ring. The presentation of the ring takes this thoughtful gift to a whole new level.”

In the video, it’s apparent the birthday girl absolutely loves the two cards and plush teddy bear given to her by her beau, but nothing compares to the moment she realizes Danny bought her a ring. She squeals, “It’s a ring! I’m going to be married!” He even kneels to the ground to ask if she’ll be with him forever and if she’ll be his wife. According to InsideEdition.com, they have plans to wed in about 4 years, when Danny feels as though he’s more financially secure for a family.

6 Bridal Pantsuits Perfect for Your Wedding Day

Lela Rose

Pants are in and skirts are out. Well, the latter isn’t necessarily true, but the former certainly is — many designers have said yes to the pantsuit for their latest collections — and the look is trickling down to the bridal world. There’s no denying that a pair of crisp trousers looks impeccably chic and classy when swaying down the aisle, making just as big of a statement as any ball gown would.

This menswear-inspired trend gives brides who aren’t into the frills of a conventional wedding dress the chance to don a silhouette that’s more true to their personal style. Some women feel more comfortable, sexier, and powerful in pants, and that’s exactly who the bridal pantsuit is catered toward. After all, bridal style has become more of a form of self-expression than anything else. While pants may have long ago been associated with both informality, their rise as a modern-day bridal look is reflective of social and cultural changes. As women have now long incorporated pants into their everyday wardrobe, why shouldn’t the trend be carried into bridal wear?

This look is also a favorite among the fashion-forward, both for real brides and celebrity brides alike. Solange Knowles tied the knot in a Stephane Rolland jumpsuit, and Amal Clooney donned a beautiful Stella McCartney two-piece suit for her civil ceremony to George Clooney. Whether you prefer wide-legged pants, cuffed hems, or cigarette trousers, there’s an array of options to suit your tastes. Just see for yourself.

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher Celebrate Sixth Wedding Anniversary with the CUTEST Throwback Photo

Aren’t they just the cutest! Country music star Carrie Underwood and her hockey player husband, Mike Fisher, celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary — and really couldn’t be more adorable. The happy couple shared Instagram snaps of each other commemorating the milestone.

The 33-year-old formerAmerican Idol star shared a photo of the duo at a romantic dinner during a recent getaway in Mexico, captioning it, “Six years ago today, I said ‘I do,’ to this handsome fella. I meant it then and I mean it now. God put us together and continues to bless our marriage. I couldn’t imagine this life without you,??@mfisher1212??I am thankful for these past six years together (and, of course, for our beautiful son, Isaiah) and I look forward to spending the rest of our lives in love.” Fisher, 36, who appears to be just as blissfully in love, shared a wedding throwback photo and wrote, “6 years ago today we were married. Time sure does fly when you’re having fun and you marry up. I’m very grateful to have an amazing wife and mother by my side!!” Serious #marriagegoals, y’all.

The pair has been together since 2008, according to ET Online, and in 2010 they tied the knot at a plantation in Georgia in a reception hall filled with the singer’s favorite color — pink! On her big day, the “Before He Cheats” singer donned a stunning custom-designed Monique Lhuillier gown with more than 3,000 handmade silk organza flowers encrusted with crystals, according to People. She also rocked a tiara with a whopping 40 carats of diamonds set in white gold, designed by Johnathon Arndt. At cocktail hour, she changed into dress #2 — a strapless Lhuillier number. “The wedding dress was huge. I wanted to get my boogie on, so I had to change.”

For the couple’s first dance, Underwood surprised her groom by getting Christian singer Brandon Heath to perform “Love Never Fails,” which she stated was very “special to us.”

And that bond only grew stronger when they became parents last year. In February 2015, the country crooner and her Canadian-born hubs welcomed a baby boy, Isaiah, into the world. Since then, they’ve been enjoying life as parents. “He’s the sweetest and smiliest baby, I think, ever,” she said to Entertainment Tonight, of her son. “So that’s a blessing when you’re waking up at three o’clock in the morning. [When] he’s smiling at you, that makes it not so bad.” Late nights or not, between her happy marriage, hunky husband, and smiley little man, Underwood is definitely a lucky girl. Happy Anniversary, you two!

9 Signs He's About to Propose (Get Ready!)

signs he's about to propose

Photo: Instagram

Proposals may be best left to a surprise. But according to Sarah Glick, proposal planner with Brilliant Event Planning in New York City, “it’s sometimes helpful to know what’s ahead to that you have time to prepare.” For example, she says, you may want the perfect manicure to go with your new engagement ring. And if you can spot a proposal coming, you can book that appointment, stat. So if you’re ready to sniff out your partner’s plans, here are nine expert signs he or she is preparing to pop the question.

1. Your partner has taken charge of an upcoming trip.
According to Glick, one of the most common and popular ways people propose is while on vacation. So, if your last-minute partner suddenly shows an interest in planning a vacation or making reservations without your help, “that might be a clue that he or she is up to something,” she says.

2. Your partner talks nonstop about your future.
Says Michele Velazquez, owner of proposal planning service The Heart Bandits, “if your guy starts referring to the way distant future a lot, he may secretly be looking for affirmation that you see a way distant future with him.” After all, no guy or gal wants your answer to be a resounding no. So, says Velazquez, “if you want him to propose, reinforce you feel the same way.”

3. He or she asks for your ring size.
The jewelry store isn’t your typical date night. But “if your significant other is happy to go into a jewelry shop with you or if you notice one of your rings go missing, he or she might be trying to figure out the measurements for your ring finger,” Glick says. “Couples today often pick out the ring together, so if you do decide to look at rings together, that is an obvious giveaway.”

4. Your partner is saving his or her pennies.
Your partner was always happy to spend a night out on the town. But now, he or she is all-too-excited to stay in for a free movie marathon. “If your usual care-free spending guy starts penny pinching, he may be saving up for your engagement ring,” points out Velazquez. “Pretend to not notice or encourage this behavior, and it will benefit you if you want a proposal.”

5. Someone makes you a manicure appointment.
Girls night out? This Friday, your friends want to make it at the nail salon. “I’ve had a couple of clients recently use their significant other’s girlfriends to their advantage to make sure that her nails are done for post-proposal,” says Glick. So if your gal pals ask you to get your nails done, “that could definitely be a sign your partner is about to propose,” Glick says.

6. Your partner starts snooping.
You’ve never caught your guy or gal in your jewelry box before. But today, you saw him snooping through your baubles as if he was planning to wear one himself. “If your partner starts snooping through your Pinterest or jewelry box, he may be looking for engagement ring inspiration or proposal ideas,” says Velazquez. “If you want your dream ring or proposal, you should plant hints here.”

7. Your partner wants to take a walk down memory lane.
According to Glick, “Often when people are about to propose, they start to get sentimental.” So whether your significant other is content to while away hours flipping through photo albums or has been writing you sweeter texts than usual, being exceptionally affectionate can be a sign a proposal is on the horizon. “If your significant other starts bringing up fond memories of the two of you, pay attention,” Glick says. “He or she might be giving you a hint.”

8. Your partner is acting secretive and nervous.
You tell one another everything. But now, when you ask where he was, he’s vague. No, he’s not cheating. “This could be a sign he is in the process of purchasing the ring or planning the actual proposal,” says Velazquez. “Don’t be overly nosey or snoopy or you could ruin your own surprise.”

9. Your partner wants to confirm all your favorites.
When a guy or gal is about to pop the question, they sometimes prepare by gathering your favorite things: Food, flowers, music, activity, or even destination.
“If your significant other starts trying to remember some of your favorite things,” says Glick, “keep an eye out for more clues.”

Miley Cyrus May Have Just Gotten a Liam Hemsworth Tattoo

If you’re one of those haters still denying that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are engaged again, well now the proof is officially in the pudding — or in this case, the Vegemite! The “We Can’t Stop” singer just can’t stop adding to her already impressive tattoo collection, but the newest addition to her body ink might just be a homage to her rumored fiancé, Liam Hemsworth. How could you not believe that these two are heading down the aisle now? After all, what’s more damning evidence of their love than permanent ink?

Despite the fact that Cyrus has been wearing her original engagement ring from Hemsworth since early this year and Hemsworth heavily implied that he and his former bride-to-be were back together in a recent GQ interview, stating “People will figure it out, they already have… They’re not dumb,” the totally-engaged-yet-not-engaged pair have yet to officially declare that they’re getting hitched. (That won’t stop us though from dreaming up the details of their possible wedding day!) But if this isn’t proof of their rekindled romance, we don’t know what is! Cyrus recently enlisted celebrity tattoo artist Doctor Woo to ink a new tiny tatt on her bod. What’s the design, you may ask? The pop star got a little jar of Vegemite tattooed on the back of her arm — the Australian snack spread her soon-to-be Aussie hubby loves!

“@MileyCyrus don’t play when it comes to #vegemite,” the tattoo artist captioned the Instagram photo of Cyrus’ fresh ink. And it turns out, neither does Hemsworth! The hunky actor has totally gushed over the food before in various interviews. “Meat pies and Vegemite,” he once told Girl.com.au when asked about his favorite foods. “Vegemite, definitely. I had four bits of Vegemite toast this morning!”

Cyrus, her new tatt, and her Aussie sweetheart are rumored to be tying the knot next month in two ceremonies — one on a beach in Los Angeles, and the other in Hemsworth’s much loved home country. Think the salty snack will be served at the wedding receptions?

5 Conversations About Money You Must Have Before Getting Married

money conversations to have before marriage

Photo: JWstudio

There are all sorts of things you’re supposed to discuss before you get married. Where do you want to live? How many kids do you want to have (if any)? Which holidays will you spend with one another’s families? But the biggest — and hardest — topic to tackle might also be the most important: Money. It is by no means a romantic conversation, but practicing talking about finances now will make it easier for you to bring up the subject down the road. To help get the ball rolling, we talked to Paige Christenberry, Senior Vice President and Wealth Advisor for Regions Bank for a few tips on how to discuss money before you’ve tied the knot, and the topics you should definitely cover.

Talk About Your Current Financial Situations
Set the groundwork for the rest of your money talks by looping each other in on your current financial status. “Do either or both of you have debt? Is one of you willing or able to contribute more toward the down payment on your first house? These are questions to think about early on,” says Christenberry. She also recommends reviewing your current monthly expenses and setting expectations for the future. “Figure out if you’ll contribute different amounts, or if you’ll split the bills down the middle,” she explains.

Talk About Your Individual Money Styles
Avoid any surprises in the long run by figuring out how you each approach money. “Are you a spender or a saver? Are you a planner with long-term goals and a savings account to match, or do you just hope for the best? Oftentimes a marriage will have one spender and one saver in the couple, which is totally okay, but you want to both know what to expect so you can plan accordingly,” Christenberry continues. Find a compromise between your styles, whether it’s starting to contribute more to a savings account or learning to occasionally allow for unexpected purchases.

Decide Who Will Actually Pay the Bills
“Tempers can flare when a payment is late because one person thought the other paid the bills,” says Christenberry. Avoid conflict in advance by clearly designating who is responsible for which payments. “This doesn’t mean they’re responsible for actually paying — you should decide between you how much you’ll each contribute — but it means that mailing the check is a certain person’s responsibility every month.”

Discuss Future Financial Goals
“Whether it’s paying off debt, buying a house, having children or even planning for retirement, start to think about what your goals are,” says Christenberry. “Discuss and determine how you’ll collaborate on these big expenses.” She also recommends meeting with a wealth advisor to determine the best ways to save and invest to help you meet these goals.

Figure Out Which Assets You’ll Keep Separate
There might be certain assets you’d prefer to keep in your own name and retain full ownership of, and that is completely fine. “For instance, if you receive an inheritance or a monetary gift while you’re married, depositing it into your joint account will make it marital property in most states,” says Christenberry. “The same is true if you deposit your paychecks into your joint checking account.” If you’d prefer to keep some (or all) of your assets separate, decide that sooner rather than later. You can always still open a joint account that you both contribute to, and use that for household expenses and the like.

Why Summer Is the Best Time to Become a Morning Person

becoming a morning person

Photo: Getty Images

Summer is the best time of year for a number of reasons: warm weather, longer hours of daylight and, most importantly, more time at the beach. It also happens to be a great time of year to (finally) become a morning person. Most of the obstacles we face in getting up in the morning are easily solved during the summer months, which can help you to set the tone for the rest of the year.

The benefits of an “early to bed, early to rise” mentality are numerous—studies showing morning people are more productive throughout the day. But it takes work, says Dr. Edward F. Group, founder and CEO of the Global Healing Center. “Becoming a morning person, especially if you’ve always identified as a night person, is going to be a challenge to achieve and maintain,” he says. “It can be done, but it won’t happen by accident. For most people, it’s going to mean going to bed earlier so they can actually get up earlier.”

But don’t be intimidated. Here, the professionals give us advice on how to make the most of our summer mornings and help even the crankiest of morning people ease into a healthy routine by the end of summer.

Try an outdoor fitness class
The warmer weather allows people in even the coldest of cities to get outside for their workouts. Jessica Nelson, HUM Nutrition’s corporate registered dietitian nutritionist, recommends getting your daily dose of Vitamin D early in the morning. “Studies have shown that getting in 20-30 minutes of sunlight between 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. is the best time to positively impact your health without getting too much of those harmful UV rays,” she says. Just be sure to apply sunscreen. When the weather is not quite as warm, she suggests a Vitamin D supplement, such as this one.

Catch a sunrise
Sunrises and sunsets are some of nature’s most beautiful sights. Some would argue seeing the sun rise is reason enough to become a morning person. Lynne Goldberg, meditation coach and co-founder of the OMG! I Can Meditate app, recommends using the sunrise to meditate. “Take advantage of summer’s early sunrises by meditating first thing, which will clear your mind and mentally prepare you for what’s ahead,” she says. “Starting the day with a meditation session has proven to boost energy levels, so you’ll continually feel refreshed and awakened when you hit the early-morning alarm.” Nelson agrees, “Exercising at any time of the day is encouraged, but moving more in the morning has been studied and shown to improve your productivity, memory and overall brain function later in the day while decreasing mental fatigue and stress”.

Embrace seasonal foods for breakfast
Summer is the best time to eat healthy, nutrient-rich, seasonal foods like strawberries, passionfruit, watermelon and tomatoes. Get in the habit of snacking on them during the summer, so that when the fall weather comes it will be easier to stick to the routine. Nelson’s personal mantra has always been that breakfast sets the tone for her day. “When you are getting in a balanced and nutritious breakfast, you are more likely to stick to a healthy eating schedule because you feel hungrier at more appropriate times throughout the day,” she says. Swerve fitness instructor Jamey Powell recommends a cool smoothie or acai bowl to cool you down after a workout. Doesn’t that sound refreshing after an outdoor fitness class? In fact, enjoying a delicious breakfast after your workout will soon start to look like a great reward for getting up and going to class.

Use your circadian rhythm to your advantage

Your circadian rhythm is the term used to describe the mental and physical changes your body goes through in a 24-hour period. It’s how your body processes physical cues like light and darkness. During the summer months, you can use this to your advantage to start waking earlier to get your day started, and increase your productivity throughout the day. “Brighter mornings can reset your internal clock, otherwise known as your body’s circadian rhythm, which regulates your sleep and wake cycles,” Nelson explains. “The idea is that if you are waking up earlier, then you are falling asleep sooner. Thus, getting a more rested night of sleep and essentially decreasing the frequency and intensity of that midday sleepiness.” Dr. Group shared a similar statement, explaining “the sun rises earlier and, providing you’ve had adequate sleep, your brain will be way more on board with getting up when it’s beginning to look light outside, as opposed to resembling the darkness of night.”

Take it easy
Becoming a morning person is not easy, but you don’t have to abruptly yank yourself out of bed each morning. Take it one step at a time. “If you wake up earlier in the morning, make that time for you, whether you get a workout in, read a book or drink a hot cup of tea,” suggests nutritionist and personal trainer Sophie Gray. Vanessa Martin is also a firm believer in taking time to appreciate every morning, which she credits as a path to enlightenment. Her recommendation is to watch a sunrise. “Cut a night out a little shorter so waking up the next day is a little easier,” she says. “See how your body responds to morning workouts. Appreciate the smell of coffee a little more, and appreciate a lazy day every now and then. This summer is your wake up call. Don’t hit snooze!”

Ana Beatriz Barros' Gorgeous Summer Wedding Was FILLED with Supermodels

Ana Beatriz Barros

Ever wonder what a bridal party made up entirely of supermodels looks like? Spoiler alert: Unbelievably gorgeous. But that’s pretty obvious, right? Brazilian supermodel, Ana Beatriz Barros, just tied the knot with her businessman beau Karim El Chiaty in a super chic summertime wedding — and with a bridal party chock full of some of the world’s most beautiful ladies!

There are so many lavish, luxurious details to this picture-perfect wedding, we don’t know where to begin! The nupitals took place in sunny Mykonos, Greece, with the model bride donning a stunning custom made wedding dress by Valentino, featuring stripes of lace, sheer tulle, three-quarter length illusion sleeves, and an off-the-shoulder neckline. Barros completed the luxe look with a choker of pearls and a cathedral length veil. But a supermodel needs a few costume changes, of course!

People magazine reports that Barros also slipped into a slinky Alessandra Rich gown for her rehearsal dinner the night before, full of ruffles, lace, and sheer Swiss dot detailing, which she paired with a bohemian braid, dotted with daisies.

With couture confections like that, obviously all eyes were on the bride. Although, it was sure hard to miss those bridesmaids! Barros filled her bridal party with a slew of international supermodels, including Cassia Lara, Fernanda Motta, Isabeli Fontana, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Jeisa Chiminazzo. The group of gals wore blush bridesmaid gowns with a high-slit in the skirt to show off their gorgeous gams. And if that wasn’t enough supermodel genes running throughout these nupitals, Alessandra Ambrosio’s mini-model daughter snagged the role as flower girl, for which she wore a crown of white blooms and a long, voluminous dress.

After the beautiful “I do’s” were said, the newlyweds and their beautiful bridal party celebrated with a dip in the surrounding Mediterranean — decked out in matching one-piece swimsuits, of course! These are supermodels, after all…
