These Texans Added a Touch of Glam to Their Casual, Fun Hill Country Wedding

It’s safe to say that Ryan McCormick owes his sister big time since she’s the very same person that introduced to him to his future wife, Kristyn Carroll. The pair met in May of 2012 when Ryan was in Austin visiting his sister — Kristyn’s best friend. “He came to town to visit her and his nephew, and we hit if off immediately over dinner and some margaritas,” Kristyn says. After two years of dating, Ryan knew he wanted to ask Kristyn to marry him and devised the perfect plan: He’d pop the question during their annual trip with friends to Vegas over the July Fourth holiday. Despite his well-thought plans, that’s decidedly not how he got down on one knee. Instead, he went casual with an at-home proposal on June 18, 2014, by attaching a note to their boxer Mac’s collar that asked if she would “marry his daddy.” “It was a perfect moment and I wouldn’t have had it any other way!” Kristyn says. “It was special and private, perfect for the two of us.”

Just like that proposal, the couple wanted a wedding that was casual and fun, but with a dash of Texas glamour. They chose Memory Lane, a rustic 18-acre venue in the heart of Texas Hill Country, as the spot for their October 10, 2015, nuptials and asked 160 guests to join in on the fun. Kayla Barker was there to capture every flower-filled moment of this couple’s fall celebration, a choice the bride says was the easiest and best decision she and Ryan made throughout their planning process. “She is so creative, kind, and really helped with my vision, so I can’t imagine having anyone else documenting our big day but her,” Kristyn says. Read on to see the beautiful details!

“We were drawn to our venue because of the beautiful trees and the Texas Hill Country landscape around the property,” Kristyn says of their Dripping Springs locale. “It’s one of my favorite areas in the state, so we knew this is where we wanted to have our special day.” When it came to design, the bride wanted lots of neutral hues mixed with natural greenery and pops of lavender, so this floral invitation suite from Wedding Paper Divas hit the nail on the head. With calligraphy from Megan Clegg of Cleggraphy Designs, the final result clued guests into the vibe of Kristyn and Ryan’s wedding day.

In addition to her engagement ring, the bride accessorized with a beautiful family ring that had belonged to her grandmother. The romantic, vintage feel of the bauble was perfectly in keeping with her lace wedding dress from Modern Trousseau, which was one of only four gowns that she had tried on. Her lace-trimmed veil and metallic Jimmy Choo shoes were her finishing touches.

Kristyn had a very specific vision in mind for flowers: Earthy and natural, with no two arrangements looking too uniform or exactly the same. “The ladies at Wild Bunches did a great job,” she says. Her gorgeous, organic bouquet, which was comprised on spray roses, dahlias, rosemary, eucalyptus, agonis, vines, astilbe, garden roses, and ruscus, hit the nail on the head.

Ryan and his groomsmen wore navy suits and plaid ties that fit perfectly with the couple’s rustic-meets-elegant vibe. Much like the bride and bridesmaids’ bouquets, the men’s boutonnieres featured white ranunculus, sprigs of lavender, and a variety of different greens.

The outdoor ceremony featured an aisle lined with greenery and white flowers and a wooden altar. Candles in clear hurricane vases also dressed up the outdoor space. As guests arrived, they were greeted by a sign indicating they could sit on whichever side they desired, rather than the tradition of the bride’s family on one side of the aisle and the groom’s family on the opposite.

Once the flower girls made their way down the aisle, Kristyn and her father walked out to an acoustic version of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” A family friend officiated the traditional ceremony.

After officially becoming Mr. and Mrs. McCormick, the newlyweds made their exit to Marvin Gay’s “Let’s Get It On.”

Guests moved inside for the reception, where they found the wood-walled space and high ceilings decorated with elegant white draping, long tables, and lots of floral arrangements. Wooden tables were done up with greenery garlands that were studded with white flowers and glowing candlelight. Taller arrangements with the same floral mix kept the space looking different.

Kristyn and Ryan’s chairs stood apart from the rest with a swag of greenery and flowers and wooden signs that read “Better Together.”

The duo departed for their honeymoon in Mexico in a flurry of light from glow sticks. “Remember that the day is about committing the rest of your life to your best friend,” Kristyn reminds future brides. “Enjoy and savor every single moment because you will never get it back again.”

We're Having a Same-Sex Wedding. Should We Have Separate Bachelor or Bachelorette Parties?

Same-Sex-Wedding-Planning-Dos-Donts.jpg

Photo: Getty Images

There is so much excitement leading up to a wedding. From engagement parties and bridal showers to wedding cake tastings and bachelor and bachelorette parties, the hard work of planning a wedding is (thankfully) interspersed with lots of fun! Same-sex weddings are no exception, though there are definitely some details that are a little bit different. One such aspect that requires a little more thought? Whether to have separate or joint bachelor or bachelorette parties. Here’s what our experts have to say about having the last fling(s) before the ring.

While bachelor parties are traditionally for the guys and bachelorette parties are usually for the girls, when both halves of the couple are the same sex, that division is a little less clear. Thankfully, coed bachelor/bachelorette parties are becoming more and more common — and are just as fun as the single-sex variety! So before you decide whether to have your big night out together or separately, know that who is on the guest list is 100% up to you.

When it comes to having one or two bachelor or bachelorette parties, consider the type of event each of you would enjoy. If you’re both on board with a weekend of wine tasting and gourmet dinners, or would love to spend a day or two by the pool and nights on the Strip in Vegas, by all means celebrate together! This is also a great idea if you have a large number of mutual friends who would be invited to both celebrations (whether you’re having a same-sex wedding or not!).

If your styles are a little different (one wants a relaxing spa getaway, while the other would love to go fishing on the lake or play a few rounds of golf), two separate bachelor or bachelorette parties might be a better idea. This way you can each enjoy activities you love with your close friends. No matter what you decide to do, throw the rules out the window and plan a bachelor or bachelorette party that you’ll really remember and enjoy!

Victoria's Secret Model Bridget Malcolm is Married! See Photos of Her Rustic-Chic Wedding

Bridget Malcolm Wedding Photos

Is there something in the water over at the Victoria’s Secret headquarters? Tons of the Angels have been making major changes as of late, whether that means exchanging the runway for a strut down the aisle as beautiful brides (like Miranda Kerr, who announced her engagement just last week), or expanding their angelic family trees (like moms-to-be Candice Swanepoel and Behati Prinsloo, who are both currently sporting adorable baby bumps). The latest lingerie-loving beauty to take the plunge? Victoria’s Secret model Bridget Malcolm, who married her musician beau Nathaniel Hoho over the weekend in a rustic-chic Pennsylvania wedding, and looked absolutely heavenly. (But is that really any surprise?)

After dating Hoho for two years, the Australian model tied the knot stateside in Mifflin, Pennsylvania — her new hubby’s hometown, according to Yahoo Australia. Malcolm pulled off an effortlessly cool-girl look for the big day that might just have you rethinking that gigantic (yet gorgeous) tulle ball gown, as she rocked a simple straight silhouette by Australian wedding dress designer Lover, featuring lightweight lace and a halter neckline. The bride wore her wavy blonde locks down for the ceremony, pulling back only a few strands to frame her face. But by the end of the reception, Malcolm’s tresses were up in a perfectly-imperfect topknot that only a model could get away with on her wedding day!

The wedding itself was quaint, rustic, and whimsical, taking place outside under the bright blue sky of a perfect summer day. The couple said their “I do’s” in front of a brick altar, with Malcolm carrying a bouquet of country-chic sunflowers down the aisle. The reception got underway beneath a curtain of twinkling fairy lights which lit the Pennsylvania sky as the guests danced and dined on vegan wedding cake, before an epic fireworks show took place as the cherry on top of the dreamy celebration.

The following day, Malcolm was proudly seen rocking her new Mrs. status, wearing a varsity jacket that toted her married name. Hey, where do we get one of those?!

Democratic National Convention Staffer Proposing to His Girlfriend Will Give You All the Feels

democratic national convention marriage proposal

Love conquers all! Amid some Democratic National Convention news-worthy controversy before the start of the event, a marriage proposal showed that not everything political is in turmoil. Case in point: DNC staffer Andrew Binns proposed to fellow colleague Liz Hart on Sunday night, in an adorable proposal on stage at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Binns, who is the Chief Innovation Officer of the Democratic National Convention, planned this epic marriage proposal to happen the day before the start of the convention, according to the The Daily Mail. His unsuspecting girlfriend and DNC staffer, Hart, was on the stage while a video played — which finished with a picture of the sea and sand. But it wasn’t just any photo of the beach; on the sand was the question every girl in a loving and happy relationship wants to hear: “Will you marry me?” Behind Hart was her soon-to-be fiancé who had knelt down on one knee with a ring, as she stood stunned with surprise. The two embraced, and the couple walked off stage with Hart still in total disbelief.

Her crafty hubs-to-be had invited their friends and family, who were there to embrace the newly engaged couple. Most of the DNC staffers were there to witness the engagement as well — some of whom had also been instrumental in producing the event.

“It was the one event, every four years, where we have so many friends and colleagues all in one place at the same time,” Hart shared with NBC Philadelphia. “I thought we were just taking another photo together, but it turned out to probably be the best photo that we’ll ever have!” she exclaimed happily. “We’ve been working on the convention for a long time; it’s a historical point for our country, and now a historical point for us,” her groom-to-be added.

The key to pulling this off without a hitch (especially with the MAJ Secret Service security presence for the main event starting Monday night)? The groom noted that telling as few people as possible to make sure it stayed a secret — which we’d have to agree is pretty sound advice — but quite difficult to do at a political convention!

The couple works on Studio 2016, the live pre-show for the convention. They met in 2013 in Mumbai while both serving on the team for Vice President Biden, The Daily Mail reports, and their first date was actually at the Taj Mahal. Talk about setting the bar high! The couple moved to Philadelphia this year so that they could work on their first event together with the DNC Committee.

Regardless of the election outcome, one thing is for sure: this guy just won “Proposal of the Year” in our book, and we’re sure there will be an epic wedding celebration to follow!

7 Couples Share The Adorable Ways They Celebrated Their First Anniversaries

Not sure how to ring in your first-year anniversary? Take a nod from these seven men and women, who celebrated the occasion in unique ways.

“We spent a lovely week in a mountain cottage, just the two of us, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. What we gave each other was a time. We had time to talk, have fun, and spend valuable time together.” — Karolina

“On our first wedding anniversary, we went to Niagara Falls in Canada. I brought a piece of our wedding cake to enjoy. We went out to dinner at the Skylon Tower — the view was amazing, and we tried escargot for the first time. We have celebrated many relationship anniversaries, but this one was very different. It was special because we were officially husband and wife. It is a feeling that is hard to describe but I won’t ever forget it.” — Felicia

“Our first wedding anniversary celebration was actually our honeymoon and it was absolutely fabulous. When my wife and I decided to tie the knot, I was finishing up my undergraduate degree and couldn’t find the time between classes to get away for our honeymoon. Once we were able to schedule our honeymoon, we took an entire month and visited England, France, Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa.” — Antonio

“The day before our anniversary, I took a pregnancy test and found out we were expecting. I filled his underwear drawer full of diapers and wrote on one with a sharpie, ‘ready or not daddy, here I come!’ And on our actual wedding anniversary, we took the top of our cake to my in-laws’ house to eat after dinner. I insisted my mother-in-law open it because I had another diaper with a note sitting on top of the cake. She opened it and let out an excited squeal, and then immediately started bawling and hugging every one.” — Gabby

“We had a second wedding! Our first official wedding … was very small and intimate, and none of my family was able to make it. We decided to wait until our one-year anniversary to host a much bigger wedding for my friends and family to participate. The hard part was already over, so this wedding was just a big party for our friends and family to get together and celebrate our love. It was great having the white wedding I had always dreamed of, surrounded by all of my loved ones.” — Lisa

“I spent our first wedding anniversary in bed with our week-old newborn daughter. I had completely forgotten about our anniversary until my husband walked in with a card and book, and smiled, saying, ‘happy anniversary.’ I spent the rest of the day finding him a great card and anniversary gift. He never lets me forgot the look of horror I had on my face for forgetting our first anniversary. We laugh about it each year.” — Stacy

“My sweet husband surprised me with a long weekend in Iceland for our first anniversary and birthdays. I was beyond excited to put my passport with my new last name to use. We spent the first day driving the Golden Circle, a beautiful day trip seeing some of Iceland’s most beautiful sights, waterfalls and geysers. We explored Reykjavik the next two days, ate some deliciously fresh seafood, and visited the local shops and restaurants. On our final full day, we relaxed and reflected on our trip at the Blue Lagoon, a geothermic spa, with the help of a glass of wine and a face mask.” — Kristen

Kristen Bell Just Shared Never-Before-Seen Photos from Her Wedding to Dax Shepard

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard Wedding Photos

Photo: Getty Images

Pop the bubbly and put on some dancing tunes because we’ve finally, finally, finally got a peek at some secret celebrity wedding photos that we’ve been waiting for since, oh, 2013. So whose famous nuptial pic are we currently fawning over? That of Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, and we’re practically squealing over the cuteness of their simple courthouse wedding ceremony. After three years of keeping those pics around lock and key, during her appearance on CBS’s Sunday Morning Bell finally revealed the sweet snapshots to the world, featuring her very non-traditional wedding day wear and their on-top-of-the-world loving looks. Sigh…

In October of 2013, Bell and Shepard said their “I do’s” in a ceremony Shepard previously (and proudly!) claimed to be the world’s worst wedding. The pair headed to the Beverly Hills courthouse to tie the knot, a wedding whose price tag would shock even budget brides, coming in at a mere $142 (gas to and from the courthouse included!) In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that same year, Shepard explained that the courthouse employees even gifted the pair with a wedding cake that read The World’s Worst Wedding. “How many people can say they threw the world’s worst wedding?” the actor proudly asked. But one look at those wedding photos (see below), and you’d know that their low-key nuptials were anything but. Come on, just look at their faces!

“We got married in a tiny room in the Beverly Hills courthouse and it was still one of the best days of my life,” Bell said during her interview, presenting the pics we’ve been waiting for. There was no white wedding dress for this unconventional bride. Instead, Bell donned a simple black shirt and trousers for the big day, pairing the unfussy look with a metallic statement necklace. The groom, however, kept things a little more traditional in a black suit and bowtie.

In the photos, Bell is seen gazing at her guy as they sign their marriage license and gets a little teary-eyed as they say their vows. In another, the newlyweds share a smooch right in front of the county clerk’s office window. So perfectly imperfect and proof that one doesn’t need a million dollar budget to have the most romantic day of their life.

During her appearance, the actress also opened up about her hubby’s struggle with addiction, saying, “He’s a wonderful father. He knows the value of things. He was an addict for many, many years and he pulled himself out of it, and he’s been sober for 11, 12 years now… He knows how many times he’s messed up and how many times he’s been really closing to losing everything.”

Now the parents of two little girls and with one of the most solid marriages in Hollywood under their belts, these two hold their family above all else. “I always think, if I’m on my deathbed, what am I gonna be thinking about?” mused Bell. “And it won’t be some random movie I participated in, or some TV show. It will be my family.”

And to think, that all started at the Beverly Hills courthouse in a pair of plain black pants!

How to Write a Ceremony Program in 3 Easy Steps

Creative Ceremony Program Ideas, Watercolor Brushstroke Program

Photo: Maxwell Monty

Ceremony programs are often a wedding planning afterthought. Sure, you’ve spent a lot of time working on the wedding ceremony itself, but explaining the details to your guests? Not so high on a bride’s list of priorities. Thankfully, writing a great ceremony program is as easy as one, two, three!

First, choose a design. Opt for something that matches your invitation and other paper goods for a cohesive look throughout your celebration. You could go traditional with a single card or a folded booklet, or get creative with something like program fans for an outdoor ceremony. Once you’ve picked your design, here’s how easy it is to fill in the details:

Step One: Outline the Basics
Your programs should give guests information to guide them through your ceremony. They all follow a similar structure, so begin with this general format:

Your names, the date, and the location of your ceremony (either at the top or on the front cover)
A brief word of welcome, a blessing or prayer
An outline of the proceedings
The names of everyone participating in your ceremony

Step Two: Fill in the Details
When you’re getting into the details, you can keep things more general or get really specific. The proceedings could be straightforward (Welcome, Readings, Exchange of Vows, The Kiss!) or go into detail about the order of the processional, which readings are included, and any additional blessings or unity rituals you’re including. For a religious ceremony in particular, you should include the names of any readings or songs that will be included in the ceremony, with the optional addition of page numbers so guests can follow along in the scripture.

When you’re naming those participating in the ceremony, the traditional format is as follows: The parents of the bride, the parents of the groom, the bridesmaids and groomsmen (with the maid of honor and best man listed first), the flower girl and ring bearer, ushers and readers, and the officiant. If you are getting married by a religious officiant or someone whose job enables them to perform a marriage (like a judge), be sure to include their proper title (Father Michael Smith, Rabbi Andrew Zimmerman or The Honorable Samuel Brown). You could also list everyone’s names in the order in which they’ll walk down the aisle so guests can follow along as each person appears.

See more: Oops! If Your Stationery Was Sent To Press With an Error, Here’s What You Can Do

Step Three: Include the Add-Ons
Of course, every wedding needs a few personal touches! A longer note to guests or a note about the meaning of the venue will help further set the scene. Having an unplugged ceremony? Put this information front-and-center so the first thing your guests see is your request that the put away their cameras and phones.

When you’re naming your wedding party, consider adding a brief note about how you know each person, whether the maid of honor is your sister or the ring bearer is the groom’s nephew.

While religious programs usually do include the names of all the readings, it’s not required for secular weddings — though it is a nice addition. Include the title of the reading, the author, and the name of the person who will be reading it.

If you’re having a multicultural wedding or including traditions guests might not be familiar with, your program is a great place to include some explanations, whether it’s the symbolism of the chuppah or the meaning of the Filipino veil and cord.

And if there are people who have passed away who you would like to honor, include a note at the end of the program acknowledging their absence. You could specify particular names, or leave this as a more general note in honor of the people who can’t be with you to celebrate.

Lastly, if your ceremony and reception are in two different locations, you may want to include the name and address of your reception venue and the reception start time so guests know where to head after your first kiss (and what time to get there!).

Jewish couples can incorporate their faith into more than the ceremony, with round table receptions and Kosher cuisine for up to 150 — all while being surrounded by Jewish artwork. Or, enjoy a cocktail party (for 300) while standing underneath luxurious Art Deco chandeliers.

The Wolfsonian-Florida International University
Tucked away on Washington Avenue in the Art Deco District, The Wolfsonian is not your typical museum. For starters, it’s housed in a revamped Mediterranean Revival building from the 1920s. No Sex Drive? These 7 Reasons Might Be Why

married-women-sex-study.jpg

Photo: Getty Images

Decrease in your sex drive? There are myriad reasons why your desire to get down may be slowing down, says Madeleine Castellanos, M.D., sex expert and author of Wanting to Want: What Kills Your Sex Life and How to Keep It Alive, and many of them include unintentionally sabotaging it yourself. Here are seven ways you might be, and how you can get back on a sexy track.

1. You’re taking the wrong birth control pill.
By now you know that the pill works to prevent pregnancy, and it does so with a cocktail of hormones that stop ovulation. But those same hormones can upset your already delicate hormone balance, “which affects everything from her moods, to her sex drive, to who she finds attractive,” Castellanos warns. “Some women find that their libido crashes and they have a difficult time getting back that same intense sensation that they had before they started the pill.” If you’ve recently begun taking the pill and experienced a dip in your sex drive, it could be time to talk to your doctor about making a switch to a different formula or another kind of birth control.

2. You think something is wrong with your body.
According to Gloria Brame, Ph.D., sexologist and author of The Truth About Sex: A Sex Primer For The 21st Century, shame over our sexuality and our bodies can impair our ability to experience pleasure. For example, “women who worry their vaginas are smelly or otherwise unpleasant can sabotage their potential for pleasure in bed by rejecting oral sex or preventing their partners from spending time on the foreplay, which would help them receive more joy,” she says. “Learning to love your body is key to enjoying all the pleasure it can bring you.”

3. Your body is in survival mode.
“If you are routinely stressed out at work, find that you have no time to work out, and stay up late answering emails or watching Netflix, that may be enough to throw the body into survival mode,” says Castellanos. And there’s no room for sex when you’re in survival mode. “Once this happens, the body tries to keep its resources by slowing down your metabolism, takes your muscle mass but keeps fat tissue, and decreases your sex hormones so that you can rest. Too often people take for granted that their body can adjust and compensate for this, until they crash.” Get your body and libido back on track by finding time for some serious R&R.

4. You can’t admit there’s a problem.
The first way to fix any problem is admitting one exists. Yet Brame says some women endure vaginal pain, dryness, discomfort, or dulled sensation — whether from childbirth or medications — without ever acknowledging it. “These are common issues,” she says, “but women are often too embarrassed to tell their doctors, who might have safe remedies.” If you’re experiencing anything less than pleasure before or during sex, consider consulting with your doctor.

5. You’re vitamin deficient.
Popping daily vitamins won’t just keep the common cold at bay. Your testosterone and estrogen levels depend on your diet, says Castellanos, “and another common cause of fizzling sex drive is depriving the body of the necessary building blocks and nutritional factors to carry out its complex processes.” Vitamin B, Zinc, Selenium, and Vitamin D are all essential for proper hormone production, so make sure you’re getting enough of each. Plus, Castellanos adds, “remember that alcohol, sugar, and simple carbohydrates all increase the stress on the body and deplete the body of these much-needed vitamins and minerals.”

6. You think sex is the least important aspect of your marriage.
According to Brame, “the No. 1 way women sabotage their sex drives is scheduling everything down to their toilet-paper buying and yet never planning time for sex.” Instead of scheduling sex, women often wait for the mood to strike, “which is a sure way for busy career women and moms to relegate sex to the bottom of their to-do lists,” Brame says. “I tell clients to add sexy time to their e-calendars, and base it on the preferences they had before their lives got so busy. So, if they used to like sex two to three times a week, they should try to stick to it, even if there’s only time for quickies. Some sex is better than no sex, and quickies keep the intimacy and most importantly the habit of making sex a priority in a marriage.”

7. You’re comparing yourself to others.
Whether it’s your BFF dishing the details of her most recent hookup or the steamy new miniseries you just started streaming, seeing how other people’s sex lives work can make you think yours is somehow lacking. “I have seen so many women wonder why they don’t get aroused as quickly as they think they should, and I have to ask what has shaped their expectations about what is normal in sexual behavior and response,” says Castellanos. Not everyone can get turned on as quickly as a TV star. “For most women, a combination of both psychological and physical arousal is what enhances their sexual experience and helps drive their desire,” she says.
