See How One Couple Totally Embraced a Wine Theme for Their Wedding in Brooklyn

It was at a 1920s-themed party that Nicole Murphy met the love of her life, Anders Nelson. Nicole almost stayed home that night, but fate brought the pair together. On their fifth date, as they crossed the Gowanus canal in Brooklyn, New York, Nicole found coins in her purse and both she and Anders tossed them into the water to make a wish. Two years later, in October of 2014, the pair enjoyed a walk along the Hudson River and ended up revealing what they each had wished for that night on the canal — to spend the rest of their lives together. It was then and there that Anders popped the question, and Nicole agreed to make their mutual dream of lifelong love come true.

To celebrate their union, Nicole and Anders invited 160 guests to Brooklyn Winery for their ceremony and reception. “It was the perfect balance of urban and rustic-chic, taking the elements that had initially enticed us about having a country style wedding and placing it in the city,” the bride says. Armed with a day-of coordinator provided by the venue, this couple created a wine-themed celebration to remember, where even guests came dressed in their best wine tones! Read on to see the details, photographed by Gary Ashley of The Wedding Artists Collective.

Nicole tackled quite a few pre-wedding projects, the first of which was working with her sister, a designer, to create the couple’s dream invitation suite. “I created the idea for the design and she drew it,” the bride says. “I then designed a paper in the color palette which I printed on Spoonflower and we that to create envelope liners for the invitation.” The DIY project paid off: In the end, the couple send out a one-of-a-kind suite with a graphic illustration in a colorful motif.

In order clue loved one’s into their unexpected color palette, the couple included a note on their invitations that guests should come dressed in a wine-toned outfit of their choosing. To help guide their decision-making, Nicole and Anders included a color palette of vino-inspired shades on their wedding website! “The entire place was a boozy rainbow, from pale chardonnay yellow to deep merlot and everything in between,” the bride says. “One guest even went so far as to create a giant champagne bottle dress, complete with popped bubbly headpiece!”

After searching high and low for her dream lace wedding dress, Nicole decided to extend her budget and try a Reem Acra gown with a blush underlay and illusion neckline. “There is something about putting on a Reem Acra dress that is unlike any other experience,” Nicole says. “I knew it would work well with the style of the space and that I would be able to move, dance, eat, and still feel glamorous!”

She paired the show-stopping silhouette with vintage jewelry borrowed from her maid of honor and a hand-dyed silk crown from Stone Fox Bride. To further personalize the floral headpiece, the bride asked that it include her late grandmother’s pearls and had wine-toned florals to fit in with their venue.

Nicole’s sister and best friend served as her maids of honor and wore mismatched dresses in burgundy and rosé. “I wanted them to choose their own dresses based on what they felt good about wearing,” the bride says. The three women carried bouquets of dahlias, calla lilies, roses, artichoke, and greenery in shades of burgundy, white, and blush.

Don’t assume the groom’s attire broke the wedding’s wine theme! Anders rocked a rosé-hued suit and merlot tie. His groomsmen wore white seersucker suits, mismatched wine-toned bow ties, and socks the bride had tie-dyed in vino-inspired tones.

“I love DIY and crafting,” the bride says. “I love custom touches and had such fun with the process of personalizing our wedding. I found it therapeutic to keep my hands busy.” Another project she took on was creating the ceremony program bags, which listed the order of events and custom logo. Inside, guests found pennies in small plastic bags, which instructed guests to make a wish — a nod to the couple’s fifth date!

The celebration kicked off with the groom’s band (appropriately named the Chardonnay Sunset Singers!) performing acoustic covers of the couple’s favorite tunes. Underneath a glass skylight roof in the venue’s atrium space, Nicole made her way down the aisle lined with candles.

The ceremony was led by the groom’s aunt, a minister, and was held atop a Moroccan wedding blanket. There, Nicole and Anders exchanged vows they wrote themselves and asked a friend to share the what they have now dubbed their “penny story.”

Before the ceremony, guests wrote blessings for the couple and placed those messages underneath the blanket. “We felt the communal spirit of love uniting us all,” the bride says.

One of the main reasons Nicole and Anders chose Brooklyn Winery for their wedding was the venue’s innate character. “The layout was cozy and inviting,” the bride says. “We wanted people to view the intimacy of the space as a reflection of us as a couple. The winery had something for every type of guest.” In addition to touring the property’s beautiful barrel rooms, there was plenty for loved ones to see during the reception, which was held in front of the venue’s living wall.

In keeping with their wine-theme, the couple’s seating chart invited guests to “Wine & Dine” — another DIY project that Nicole decided to tackle.

Friends and family sipped on delicious Brooklyn-made wine, Manhattans, and Martinis and dined family-style at long wooden farm tables. Low floral centerpieces were arranged in mason jars that had been spray painted with metallic gold accents. The mix of burgundy, yellow, and green blooms complemented the venue’s warm wooden décor.

Wine barrels topped with overflowing arrangements of olive branches and plenty of candles kept the space feeling romantic.

Each place setting featured a dip-dyed card tucked into a wine cork with the guest’s name written in gold. For dinner, Nicole and Anders selected a crowd-pleasing spread, including escarole caesar salad, herbed panko-crusted fluke, roasted chicken with rosemary marinade, green beans, and a root vegetable gratin. “We didn’t need a signature cocktail because the venue’s wines were so good!” the bride says.

The couple’s wedding cake was a three-tiered naked cake made by their good friend and pastry chef, Ariella Feller. The mint-infused chocolate cake was finished with mint buttercream icing and fresh mint-infused whipped cream.

The reception was full of entertainment and laughs, as the couple wanted an interactive day with their guests. They provided a photo booth with props to invite friends and family to loosen up and create some memories of their own. “We got some of the most entertaining photos from here! A boa can work wonders to loosen up an otherwise shutter-shy uncle,” Nicole says. Speeches from guests even incorporated costumes, songs, bubble machines, and karaoke.

For brides planning their wedding day, Nicole shares this reminder: “Embrace the unexpected and don’t let anything ruin the day. You’re marrying your person!”

Who Should Help Me Put On My Wedding Dress?

Things Every Bride Wants to Hear While Wedding Dress Shopping

Photo: Samm Blake

You’ve picked a wedding dress, gone to fittings, planned the day, and gotten your hair and makeup done. Now’s the time to put on your bridal gown, but you can’t do it alone. So who should be in the room zipping zippers and buttoning buttons? Here are a few ideas from our experts.

The most traditional option for who to have help you put your dress on is Mom. She’s been there for you since day one, so why not have her there on your wedding day? There’s also a good chance she was with you when you picked out your dress and at least one fitting, meaning she’s seen how to get your dress on and is probably familiar with your bustle. Want to keep the moment family-only? Consider asking your sister to step in to help with all the buttons.

Another common choice is to have your maid of honor be the one who helps put your dress on. She may do it alone, giving the two of you a moment of peace and calm, or she might have all your bridesmaids behind her to point out if she missed a button or help her hold your bodice while she laces the corset. Of course, a bride who opts to include the entire bridal party in the dressing process should remember that her ladies will be seeing a lot more of her than they may have before — there isn’t much room for a bra and boyshorts under most wedding gowns!

Looking for a little more peace and quiet? Putting on your dress doesn’t have to be such a to-do. Instead, ask your wedding planner to help zip you up. You could have your photographer document the moment, or take some time to yourself to breathe, brush your teeth, and have a little water. Then head out for a big reveal with the whole gang, and ask your photographer to capture the finishing touches like your jewelry and veil.

Olympic Figure Skater Sasha Cohen is Married! See Photos from Her Romantic Cape Cod Wedding

Sasha Cohen Wedding

Olympic figure skater Sasha Cohen may already have a silver medal around from the 2006 Olympic Games, but if you ask us her recent Cape Cod nuptials just won the gold when it comes to weddings! (Wedding planning is totally an Olympic sport, right?) Over the weekend, the champion skater married her sweetheart, Tom May. And every aspect from their big day — from Cohen’s wedding dress to their stunning wedding flowers — all earned perfect 10s from us!

After competing on the ice back at the 2006 Olympics, Cohen snagged a piece of ice of an entirely different kind when her boyfriend of two years popped the question. The skater returned to academics after her silver medal win and met hedge fund manager Tom May at a Harvard Business School party in 2014. A year later, Cohen announced their to-be-wed status in an #EngagementRingSelfie on Instagram, where she showed off her new oval-cut bling and her hubby-to-be. “Engaged to the most incredible man… I’ve never been so happy,” she captioned the photo. Now, the perfect pair are officially newlyweds, after having tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on Cape Cod on Saturday.

Before the “I do’s,” Cohen got her bridal beauty on, lounging around her bridal suite wearing a white silk robe with her bridesmaids (see below). Then the bride slipped on her ethereal wedding dress featuring lace and beaded embroidery and tufts of tulle for her walk down the aisle. Confession: We used to be majorly jealous of the Cohen’s sparkly skating costumes. But that’s nothing compared to the envy we feel looking at her gorgeous gown!

The couple said their “I do’s” at sunset beneath a ceremony arch of lush white blooms and greenery, overlooking the beautiful blue sea. Next up was the reception, where the couple was lifted into the air during the traditional Jewish Hora before cutting into a scrumptious three-tiered white wedding cake, with the bride’s sister, Natasha Cohen, capturing all the unforgettable moments on Instagram.

But what was the bride’s favorite memory of the day? “Walking into the reception for the first time as a married couple as everyone clapped and cheered,” Cohen told Entertainment Tonight. “The room was magical.”

Now, the newlyweds are just looking forward to some post-“I do’s” relaxation. “We’re mostly just looking forward to finally being a married couple — no more wedding planning — and our honeymoon!” said the skater.

We feel you, Cohen. Wedding planning is tough. But we’re sure it’s nothing compared to a triple axle…

4 Surprising Foods That Can Cause Wedding Day Bloat

watermelon slices

Photo: Getty Images

You’ve put all the effort into a pre-wedding diet and spent time researching all the super foods that will keep you healthy and feeling great on your wedding day, but one more thing you should take into consideration are the foods that may make you bloated. You may find yourself feeling uncomfortable and even feeling like you have to squeeze into a wedding dress that previously fit you flawlessly. Here, a list of 4 foods to bid goodbye to until after you say “I do.”

1. Onions
While you may already be planning on avoiding onions altogether (no one wants onion breath on their wedding day!), you may want to consider the trouble they can cause internally. Onions up the water absorption in your liver and can be a pain to digest.

2. Watermelon
Bear with us here. We know watermelon is often listed as a fruit to munch on because it is filled with so much water and will help you stay hydrated throughout the day. However, the delicious fruit is also filled with high levels of fructose, which may be hard for some people to digest. If you can’t digest watermelon well, you may find yourself with gas and bloating.

3. Yogurt
If you want to eat yogurt on your wedding day, stick to eating plain Greek yogurt only. Other types of yogurt may be trouble, since some types (like low-fat and non-fat) may contain varying levels of sugar molecular lactose, which can cause your belly to feel unbalanced and bloated.

4. Artificial Sweeteners
Put the soda, gum and gummy bears down. Foods that contain artificial sweeteners often contain small amounts of sugars that are absorbed very slowly in the small intestine and can leave you with an upset stomach and a lot of bloating.

Home and Family Star Mark Steines and Julie Freyermuth are Married! See Their Beautiful Wedding Photos

Imagine you’re heading to a friend’s party to enjoy an afternoon with friends — and then the unthinkable happens — a surprise wedding occurs! Welp, that’s exactly what happened on Saturday, August 20 in Los Angeles when a casual Saturday afternoon turned into a surprise wedding for Mark Steines and Julie Freyermuth.

The backstory: about 100 people headed to TV personality Mark Steines’ home, where they thought they were attending an anniversary party for his show Home and Family. The Hallmark Channel show had just celebrated its fifth year on air, so it was an easy ploy for the two to hide their nuptials before the big reveal, Us Weekly confirmed. His beautiful bride, Julie Freyermuth, 36, is the author of the children’s book series Norbert the Dog, who is based upon her real-life dog Norbert, a 3-lb mixed breed therapy dog (with the cutest little wiggly tongue and floppy ears). Of course, he played a role in the nuptials.

In a flowy, off-white BHLDN gown with a strapped sweetheart bodice and flute-shaped train, the elegant bride walked down the aisle to the surprise of all their guests to one of the couple’s favorite songs, “100 Years” by Five for Fighting. The beautiful brunette wore her hair back with just a few tendrils left forward, adding to her romantic look, while holding white peonies in a tight bouquet. A thin silver necklace grazed her neck, and her nails were polished a pinkish beige color. The only real jewelry on her hands was her engagement ring and a Neil Lane French antique wedding band, created circa 1910 — worn by both the bride and the groom.

The wedding reception had a celebrity-filled guest list, including Leeza Gibbons, Nicky Whelan, Kerry Rhodes, and Dot-Marie Jones, who officiated the wedding. During the festivities, guests wined and dined on delicious comfort foods like fried chicken, Kobe sliders, and shrimp with a dessert table that included chocolate and Nutella-covered strawberries — a winner in most wedding guests’ minds (and stomachs).

The two first met in August 2015 when the children’s book author was a guest on Steines’ show, and almost a year-to-the-date later, they tied the knot. “It was a day filled with love and laughter as our friends and family watched as our hearts danced under the stars,” Steines, 52, shared. “Julie has illuminated [my family’s] world. The darkness that once existed has been lifted and I am exuberant for the bright future that awaits our family.” The former Entertainment Tonight host and photographer is a divorced father of two.

After the party died down and the guests left, it was clear to see the newly-married husband and wife were left feeling totally on cloud nine, ready to begin their lives together. Both posted twinning Instagram snaps of each other the next day in their wedding attire (with totally adorable captions!), with the journalist sharing a photo of his wife looking down and smiling in her white wedding dress, writing “Good morning wife.” Not to be outdone, his bride shared a photo of her new hubs in his off-white suit complete with a white button down and black bowtie, saying “Good afternoon husband.” It seems the two are both smitten with each other and their new marital status, and pulled off one heck of a surprise wedding. As it should be!

The 4 Fall 2016 Wedding Trends That are All the Rage Right Now

As we start to say goodbye to sun-kissed weather and welcome a brand-new season into our lives, it’s time to say hello to the fall wedding season. With this crisp air and smell of pumpkin spice come some unique wedding trends — fit for even the pickiest of brides. And while some ideas may be incorporated seamlessly into your wedding style, others may feel a bit too risky to attempt. Either way, take note of the four most popular fall 2016 wedding trends that we’re seeing this season and do with them what you wish!

1. Daring Wedding Gowns
As we’ve seen the past few seasons, wedding dresses are becoming more daring. Some wedding dress designers are tossing out tradition — often using different fabrics and colors to create a more 3D effect. Plunging necklines and cutouts are in — which of course includes crop top and skirt ensembeles — a trend that appears to be here to stay.

2. Minimalistic Décor
Instead of pouring thousands of dollars into floral arrangements and towering centerpieces that block guests’ views at their tables, much wedding d&eacute’cor is being toned down this season. This minimalism creates an overall atmosphere that looks effortless and natural is quickly becoming sought after by many brides.

3. Unique, Personalized Menus
Instead of having the usual dinner option of steak or fish, the new trend is to have food that fits in with the bride or groom’s culture (or just liking!). Whether it’s having a BBQ bar or appetizers that encompass one specific genre of food while the main course is another, it’s become quite trendy to mix and match food, serving cuisine that appears to have come straight from the couple’s favorite restaurant.

4. Craft Cocktails
Signature cocktails have been a trend for years at weddings, but the newest trend is doing more craft-style cocktails that look like they came straight out of an episode of Mad Men. In addition to an open bar that serves liquor, beer, and wine, couples are employing a classic cocktail bar where they can order drinks that look like they are straight from ’60s.

JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers' Families Just Surprised Them with an Epic Engagement Party

JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers Engagement Party

First comes the rose, then comes the ring. So what comes next for The Bachelorette couple, JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers? The engagement party, of course! The to-be-wedded duo were just treated to a surprise engagement bash at their hands of both their families. The things we would’ve done to score an invite…

After Fletcher chose Rodgers as ‘the one’ and the groom-to-be in turn proposed on The Bachelorette finale just a few weeks ago, these two have been moving forward with their relationship at warp speed. And why shouldn’t they? After all, the too-cute couple were forced to keep their love under wraps until the much-anticipated finale aired. Two weeks ago, the reality show sweethearts made the move from Tennessee to Texas to move into their nearly-wed nest in Dallas. And next on the agenda was an engagement party to celebrate their relationship status!

The darling duo headed to a Texas restaurant on Saturday night where they were expecting to meet a few friends for dinner, according to E! News. But they were actually in for quite the sweet shock when both of their families were there for a surprise engagement bash. “My heart is so full!” Fletcher captioned an Instagram snapshot of her and her hubby-to-be’s families. “Jordan and I were going out to what we thought was just a little dinner with friends but instead walked into a room full of both our friends and family to celebrate in our engagement. We are so incredibly blessed,” she wrote, including the hashtag “#fletchersmeettherodgers.”

Rodgers was also moved by the surprise gesture, sharing a photo of himself and his older brother, Luke Rodgers, and writing “When you think you are just going to dinner with your fiancé and a few friends and you walk into a room full of both your families and best friends! So blessed to not only have found the love of my life @joelle_fletcher, but have an amazing family and new family to share a life with. So blessed to do life with these people!”

It’s always a relief when the families of the bride and groom get along. And if these photos are any indication, the future Fletcher/Rodgers family dinners and holidays are bound to be a blast!

Moving in Together? The 5 Things You Absolutely Can't Forget to Do

moving in together

Photo: Getty Images

Whether you’ve just gotten married or are taking the plunge way before your wedding day, moving in together is a huge milestone in any relationship. You’re going from spending as much time together as possible to living together, 24/7, and that come with its own set of challenges. Maybe you’re moving into his current apartment, the two of you signed a lease together, or you’ve secured a mortgage and are buying your first home. Whatever the situation, here are five things you should make sure to do before you start packing those boxes.

Take Inventory
Two people means double the stuff — and a lot of duplicates of things you only need one of. Go through both of your current homes and make a list of big items you both have (like sets of dishes, couches, or beds). Then decide which you’ll keep, which you’ll toss, or if you’ll get rid of both and invest in something new. Try to do this before you’ve registered for anything so you can shop around for upgrades or items you’ll both love. This way you’re not stuck eating off of his chipped beige dinnerware from college, and he doesn’t feel weird sleeping on your pink floral sheets.

Create a Budget
Combining households means sharing a lot of costs, from your rent or mortgage to the Netflix subscription and groceries. Even if you aren’t planning to share finances, you’ll want to outline how much you plan to spend together every month. Find a number that feels right to each of you, then decide if you’ll open a joint account for household expenses or if one of you will pay for electricity and heating while the other will cover your parking pass and internet.

Set Expectations
They say opposites attract, but when a neat freak shacks up with someone who can’t remember the last time they made the bed, tensions can rise quickly. You probably have an idea of your partner’s living and cleaning habits at this point, but you’ll want to set expectations before you’ve opened the front door instead of waiting for a month or two and then getting upset when something isn’t put away properly. Some couples choose to divide cleaning tasks, while others tackle things together. Whichever style suits you, talk through ways that the less organized of the two can contribute to controlling clutter while the more organized can allow for certain less-than-perfect arrangements.

See more: The Signs You’re Ready to Move In Together

Plan For the Unexpected
This goes back to budget. Even if every monthly expense is covered, there’s always something you don’t expect, from a leaky sink to an unseasonably cold week that kicks your heating bill into overdrive. Set aside some funds to provide wiggle room, and talk about how you’ll handle surprise expenses that are above and beyond what you’ve planned for.

Make Space
Even after you’ve decided what to keep and what to toss, you may still want to downsize a little bit. After all, moving in together doesn’t always come with double the space! Use this as an opportunity to clean out your closet, get rid of those things you forgot you still had (college textbooks, anyone?), and get organized. This is especially important if one of you is moving into the other person’s current home: Making room for their things is the quickest way to make them feel like a welcome addition instead of an intruder.

A growing body of evidence suggests that highly processed foods contain chemicals that cause inflammation in the body and, in turn, promote obesity by fooling our taste buds in a way that blunts our internal satiety cues causing us to overeat.

Processed foods are also deliberately engineered to make you crave them, lighting up the same “reward” area of the brain that drugs like cocaine do, says Rachel Beller, R.D., of Beller Nutritional Institute in Beverly Hills and author of Power Souping. Yikes!

Odds are you’ve already cut out a bunch of these foods as part of your wedding diet (Sigh… Potato chips), but there are lots of seemingly healthy options — like whole grain crackers, or low-cal frozen dinners — that are still über-processed.

Read food labels and steer clear of anything with long ingredients lists or unpronounceable Frankengredients. Generally, if it comes in a bag or box and has a long shelf life, you don’t want to know from it.

Instead, shop the perimeter of the store, where the whole foods like fruits, veggies, lean meat and dairy live, and make sure the majority of your cart is filled with those good guys.
