Now that the Olympics are over, our minds can focus on other things, like every possible details about Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson‘s upcoming wedding. Will gold medals be part of their wedding decor? Will their adorable son steal the show as a ring bearer, or even better, a tiny best man?
According to E! News, the future Mr. and Mrs. Phelps have been slowly leaking some wedding and relationship details to the press, and we are all about it. While we highly doubt that gold medals will be anywhere near there nuptials and, lets face it, their son will be the center of attention at this wedding no matter what his role is, we are learning some fascinating things.
During an interview with Cosmopolitan, Johnson revealed that they are planning to exchange vows at the end of this year, and that Phelps only cares about two very specific aspects of wedding planning: “I also know him well enough to know that he does want to be involved in what flavor our cake is going to be and what flowers he thinks are ugly and what flowers he thinks are really pretty,” she revealed. The rest of the planning, Johnson told Today, has been all on her, as Phelps has been, you know, winning gold medals and stuff.
In a separate interview with Access Hollywood, Johnson said that they plan on having a small and intimate wedding, as well as “a massive bash for everyone in the States,” which leads us to believe that Phelps and Johnson are having a destination wedding. No details have emerged on where exactly the couple will choose to be married, but something tells us that after spending hours and hours in and around water, they will be looking for a more inland location. (Or they’ll be craving some ocean views after a fabulous few weeks in Rio, who knows.)
The last, and perhaps most heartwarming detail about their wedding is that Phelp’s mom, Deborah, is 100% in support of their love. In an interview with Elle, Deborah said that she was in full support of her son getting back together with Johnson after they split in 2011.
“He said, ‘I’m getting back with Nicole,’ and I said, ‘That’s where you should be,'” Deborah told Elle.
Phelps and Johnson started dating in 2007, and were on and off again until 2011, when they officially split. They didn’t get back together again until 2014, and quickly got engaged in February 2015. This May, they welcomed their son, Boomer Robert Phelps, who was the star of the 2016 Olympics, despite his father breaking an over 2,000-year-old Olympic record by having 23 gold medals.
We may not have all of the details about Johnson and Phelps’ upcoming wedding, like where they’ll exchange vows, what the bride will wear, and what flavor the cake will be (since this, apparently, is a huge priority on their wedding to-do list), but we can confidently assume that this wedding will be both gorgeous and flawless. Hopefully the couple will throw us a bone and post some pictures on social media!
