While great wedding planners and designers often spend a lot of their time coming up with new and out-of-the-box ideas that clients and guests have never seen before, there’s something to be said about good old-fashioned wedding traditions and trends. Some of these throwback ideas have finally come back around, while others truly never left. From tried-and-true to decidedly retro, including a nod to the past in your wedding is a great way to honor the tradition you’re becoming a part of — and even make your bash feel more timeless by incorporating ideas from different eras. We talked to top planners from across the country to find out which old school wedding trends they totally (still) love and why they’ll be right at home on your wedding day.

Disposable Cameras
Thought the days of cameras on the tables were long gone now that everyone has a smart phone? Think again. Says Lindsey Nickel, owner and lead planner of Lovely Day Events, “Adults may not be as into it [you can’t Snapchat from a film camera!], but kids will LOVE it! In the age of technology, kids may have never seen these before, and will love getting to run around and use them.” Just think of all the sweet and hilarious snaps you’ll end up with once everything is developed!

Cake Cutting
This is one tradition that hasn’t really gone anywhere, but is getting a brand new look. “We love translating the cake cutting to fit in with the more contemporary trend of dessert tables,” says Kate Whelan, owner and lead consultant of Kate Whelan Events. “It’s turned into the first truffle, first doughnut, first cupcake… whatever the couple chooses! It’s still fun to share that first bite of something sweet as a married couple.” It’s also a great moment to share with family and friends. No matter the dessert, everyone is anxiously waiting to see if it will get messy, even if you decide to play nice.

Bar Carts
Get really retro with an old school champagne or liquor cart making the rounds at your reception. “Style it with a gorgeous bucket, vintage glassware, and mirrored trays adorned with flowers and a menu,” says Katy Roberts, owner and founder of VOWS Wedding & Event Planning. “Wheel it up to the sweetheart table for table-side service, creating an old world feel of class and elegance. Presentation is everything!”

Glow Sticks
While sparklers may be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re looking for a Grand Exit idea, very few venues allow them. Adds Nickel, “They can also be dangerous in the hands of people who have been drinking all night!” Instead, she recommends glow sticks, which are a fun throwback — and easy on the wallet. “Wear them as jewelry on the dance floor, then wave them around during the exit for a safe and fun photo opp!”
