It turns out one of our fave royal couples may have never been a thing. Recent insider reports have surfaced revealing that the young Princess Elizabeth was warned by her royal courtiers not to marry Greece-born Prince Philip back in 1947 for the most absurd reason… his humor! But, as is pretty obvious today, the Queen clearly didn’t listen to instruction and went with her gut — and almost 70 years later with the jokester prince by her side, the rest is history. Take THAT naysayers!
The shocking reports came from the Queen’s biographer, A.N. Wilson, who spoke at the Cheltenham Literature Festival on why the princess was told to avoid Philip at all costs. According to the Telegraph, “She was warned the then naval officer was ‘entirely the wrong person to choose’ and made ‘gaffes.'” But by age 14, Princess Elizabeth was certain that the beautiful blonde prince was “the one” even though her advisers were super concerned about his sense of humor.
The biographer though feels differently. Wilson said at the festival, “Many of his jokes are extremely funny. He has been what she has described [as] a tower of strength. The fact that he makes all these so-called gaffes, well…I don’t think they are gaffes. They are the kind of jokes a naval officer of a certain age might make. I think [they are] made rather wonderfully.”
