The 5 Major Reasons You Should Hire a Wedding Planner

How to Decide Whether You Should Hire A Wedding Planner

Photo: Getty Images

When it comes to the planning process, the bridal spectrum stretches from “I have no idea what I’m doing” to “I think wedding planning may be my calling. Should I quit my day job?” Accordingly, for brides who don’t know where to start, hiring a wedding planner to help them along the way can feel like a no brainer. But for brides who are feeling like they’ve got this from the get-go or who feel like the extra help isn’t financially feasible, is spending thousands on a planner really worth the investment?

Planners Claire Weller and Susan Cordogan of Big City Bride say it absolutely is worth it, and insist that stance isn’t just their bottom line talking — it’s their clients’ bottom line, too. If you choose your planner wisely, it can actually end up saving you money.

1. Planners can help with your budget constraints and legal contracts.

“We can then stretch your budget because we know what’s more important. We know what’s going to have more impact,” Cordogan says. “We recently had a bride who wanted bagpipers and we just did her day of coordination so we learned that she spent over $1,000 on five bagpipers and bagpipers are so loud you only need one. We could have saved her $800 in that small decision. Even small decisions can add up to big savings when you have a planner who knows what they’re doing.”

2. Planners will fight for your wedding vision and keep everything on track.
In addition to helping couples with their budget and supervising sticky details like legal contracts, the most important perk of a planner, Cordogan and Weller say, is having someone who’ll fight for your wedding vision from start to finish. While many vendors tackle more than one wedding per day or per weekend, a planner is focused only on your special day and will push to make sure everything goes according to your unique plan.

“It really is a long journey to the alter and on the wedding day [you want] someone who knows what’s in your brain and knows that you want an outdoor ceremony even if it looks like rain, and will fight for that until the very last minute,” Cordogan says, “Or if it does rain we’re going to run out there and dry out the chairs.”

3. Planners can keep things stress-free.

From a vendor’s perspective, working with a wedding planner instead of directly with the bride or groom or their parents can keep things streamlined and stress-free. Erin Foster-Olszewski, owner of West Town’s A Stem Above floral design, says especially as the wedding day gets closer, she’d rather bother a planner ironing out last minute details than worry an already-stressed couple directly. According to Cordogan, planners having those built-in relationships with vendors can also cut costs.

4. Planners can get you a vendor discount.
“Sometimes discounts don’t appear on paper. If we call our lighting guy and on the wedding day we don’t like what he’s brought, you can be sure we’re going to have him add extra lighting and [you’re not going to] get charged for it,” she says. “We are repeat business. Couples are not. [The vendors] aim to please us so we bring them more business.”

5. Planners can handle ceremony to reception flipping.
Full and partial planning packages aside, Foster-Olszewski says a day-of coordinator is ideal, if you can wing it, especially if your celebration involves complex orchestration like flipping the ceremony space in a short time period so it’s ready for the reception.
“It is so important to have somebody who can bring in vendors who are familiar with the space who are familiar with what they’re doing,” she says.

6. Planners can help you coordinate the entire day (as opposed to just one aspect).
A wedding that’s divided in multiple venues with their own coordinators may require less overall coordination, Foster-Olszewski says. But even if a venue offers an in-house coordinator, Cordogan advises couples to remember that that person will likely only be coordinating the specific details that venue is responsible for providing, like food or the space itself. They may not be focused on helping you juggle all the little details that will make your special day so special. And juggling details is the last thing you and your fiancé want to worry about on your wedding day.

“At a hotel or a venue, they see a wedding every weekend or two a weekend,” Weller says. “Your wedding planner wants to make sure this is your wedding. So having someone help you understand how to celebrate that is so important.”

Even so, full wedding planning may not be practical or even possible for everyone. Maybe you have event experience yourself, your fiancé is a whiz with spreadsheets or your budget just won’t allow it. If a couple has already booked their major vendors and only decides to consult a planner mid-way through the process, most planners still offer partial or customized packages that can fit your needs.

“Some brides are really creative, they’re going to be able to do their print material on their own because they’re a designer or their best friend is a designer. Some people have a vision and are great at decorating and are going to be able to manage their design but a lot of brides have no vision, haven’t been dreaming about their wedding forever, don’t know how to pull together a high-end wedding,” Weller says. “So every couple is different in terms of what they need help with.”

5 Wedding Ceremony Backdrop Ideas That Haven't Been Done to Death

Let’s be real, we’ll never grow tired of seeing fabulous bohemian floral arches and over-the-top flower walls at weddings (à la Kim and Kanye, of course). However, if you’re looking for something new (not old) and a little bit out of the box too, we’ve got you covered. Feast your eyes on these five fresh wedding ceremony backdrop ideas that haven’t been done to death — and definitely don’t have to involve flowers either.

1. Statement Murals
Because why not turn your wedding backdrop into a work of art? A colorful mural in the event space or even a still picture of the couple or something simple to match their vibe, perhaps like a palm frond for a tropical wedding, looks chic, say event planners Natasha Burton and Jennifer Arreguin, co-founders of Swoon California.

2. Macram&#233 Backdrops
Boho brides, this trend has your name written all over it! You can either keep it plain and simple or accent with some greenery for added texture. Macram&#233 hangings can be suspended from wooden beams, poles or doorways and all by itself it makes a very natural yet chic backdrop that’s understated in style, points out planner Aviva Samuels of Kiss The Planner. Another bright idea for bohemian brides: streamers, fabric or dream catchers, notes Chancey Charm Charlotte wedding planner Miranda Tassi. “These are always fun options, especially as they allow you to incorporate playful, vibrant and colorful patterns that further speak to your individuality and style as a couple.”

3. Portable Wall Panels
To create a modern feel for a fresh backdrop, wedding planner Marilisa Schachinger of Martel Event recommends using a large, but portable wall panel. “In addition to providing endless options for painted color or texture adhered to the wall, the ability to repurpose the backdrop for behind the wedding cake or a photo area ensures it remains a focal point throughout the event.” In regards to texture, she especially loves the look of painted marble.

4. Draperies, Bed Sheets, Blankets & Shower Curtains
Creativity is the name of the game. As a huge fan of patterns and textures, Samuels loves creating backdrops out of bed sheets, blankets, draperies and shower curtains — particularly the latter two since they already have a pole pocket sewn in them or holes at the top to hook onto a doorway.

5. Clusters of Anything
Time to put on your thinking caps brides because, according to Samuels, just about anything can be used as a wedding ceremony backdrop. Seriously, cluster lots of any one thing together and mission accomplished. “Think balloons, lanterns, lights, paper garland, potted plants, cheerleader pompoms, picture frames, photographs, balls, ribbons…literally anything. As soon as you string them together or line them up next to each other you’re in business.”

This Bride's Blue Wedding Dress Was the Perfect Look for Her Spring-Inspired Nuptials in California

When Kyle Kloeppel and Brittney Toccoli first met in January of 2008, they were 17 and 19, respectively. “That feels like a huge barrier at that age,” Brittney remembers,” so we grew closer as friends and eventually started dating the next spring when he began visiting me in college.” Five years later, on July 30, 2014, Kyle surprised Brittney with a one-of-a-kind proposal — even though she had a hunch it was coming. “We had always talked about getting engaged once we finished our degrees, so I knew it was coming but was really wrapped up in the occasion somehow still being a surprise.” Luckily, her groom-to-be had an idea she would never have thought of: Kyle enlisted the help of Brittney’s favorite Starbucks and asked if he could play barista when she pulled up at the drive-in that day. “He popped out the window in a dress shirt with flowers, coffee, and the ring. It was absolutely the biggest surprise of my life and so very, very us.”

The pair knew they wanted to get married the following spring, and quickly started considering venues near Sacramento, where Kyle grew up. While the bride and groom loved that the properties they toured had lodging and pools for guests to enjoy, they weren’t able to lock in a date they wanted. Enter the bride’s mother’s best friend, who graciously offered up her private home in Acampo, California. “The property is already gorgeous, so decorating was not difficult,” Brittney says. “We wanted a lush, summer celebration with a formal twist.” They set the date for June 13, 2015, and invited 205 guests to join them for an elevated backyard wedding with a distinctly California vibe. You don’t want to miss one single detail from this stunning late spring celebration, as photographed by Sean Money + Elizabeth Fay.

Although the bride found a Lanvin gown she absolutely loved, she knew it wasn’t right for her ceremony. “There was something about getting married in white that felt off for me,” Brittney says of her wedding dress. “I started considering colored veils first, but then I saw this blue Monique Lhuillier wedding dress and couldn’t get it out of my system. My generous mom let me get both dresses, and that was that!” The strapless silk faille ball gown was complete with a full and textured skirt and fitted bodice. And with its high-low silhouette, she was able to show off her white Manolo Blahnik shoes.

As for the Lanvin that originally caught her eye? Well, you’ll see what she did with that dress later.

Brittney’s gorgeous all-white bouquet featured carnations, peonies, garden roses, and greenery. “Carnations are my favorite flower, so that was a no-brainer,” she says. “The other flowers just seemed to coordinate well.” She initially wanted a cascading bouquet, but with the movement of her full skirt, sticking to a classic round bouquet let both the dress and the flowers shine rather than compete.

Kyle dressed the part, too. He complemented his bride’s knockout style in a Burberry slim-fit suit, but left one important accessory off during the ceremony at Brittney’s request: His glasses! “He wore the glasses he’s worn since we started dating for most of the day and evening, but I didn’t want to see my reflection in them while we were saying our vows,” says Brittney. “He was very kind and wore contacts during the ceremony just for me. He looked so handsome, and I loved getting to really see him during that special moment.”

The bride struggled to find a traditional bridesmaid’s dress that fit the chic, simple aesthetic she was going for. Instead, she started scouring the Internet to find mismatched looks that were similar in color and material. “Let me tell you, total chaos!” Brittney says. “All the bridesmaids didn’t even have dresses until weeks before the wedding. And I use the term dresses lightly because one of them wore a jumpsuit, which was probably one of my favorite details of the wedding.” Although it took a great deal of legwork to coordinate her attendant’s looks, Brittney couldn’t have been happier with the final result. “Everyone looked completely gorgeous and when I look at the photos, I still gawk at their outfits.”

Each woman carried a petite white bouquet with peonies and hydrangeas.

Kyle’s groomsmen were just as stylish as the ladies in their slim hit H&M suits and skinny ties.

Brittney’s cousin’s daughters served as the couple’s flower girls. “We have a big family and are all local, so I’ve loved watching these girls grow up,” she says. “I let them pick from a couple different David’s Bridal dresses, though I always knew they would choose the more princess-y of the options!”

The couple had one last very important attendant: Their dog, Debbie Harry! Their florist made her an adorable floral collar and the sweet young girls walked her down the aisle on a white leash. “At one point she nearly took out one of the girls by wrapping her up in the leash, but Kyle’s cousin leapt in to save the day,” Brittney laughs. “Every event needs some comic relief.”

With the help of Elyse at Willow Floral, the bride and groom transformed the already well-appointed backyard into a dreamy ceremony space. “She built us the most beautiful flower wall for our altar and two large urn arrangements for the aisle entrance,” Brittney says.

The greenery wall was studded with roses and hydrangeas — a nod to the color of the bride’s wedding dress, which was dubbed “hydrangea blue” by the designer. Brittney and Kyle utilized pieces of the existing landscape, like the stone path that served as their aisle.

The couple’s three flower girls and Debbie Harry kicked off the ceremony, walking down the aisle to a prolonged version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” performed by a jazz trio. The bride’s father saw her for the first time as she joined him at the head of the aisle. “I kept my dresses a strict secret so he wept when he saw me,” Brittney remembers. The two walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time after Time” to the total delight of her groom and guests.

Kyle wanted to write personalized wedding vows, but Brittney was nervous hers wouldn’t live up to the “heartbreakingly beautiful” words she anticipated her groom sharing. “I’m glad we went traditional because instead of focusing on remembering my words, I was able to really focus on and absorb what was happening,” she says. “Kyle eventually gave me his vows in a card and I, of course, promptly wept.”

Following the ceremony, Brittney changed into the Lanvin gown that had first caught her eye. “I found it on Pinterest before we were even engaged and it stopped my heart,” she says of the strapless dress with an oversized bow on the back. “My mom was able to locate the last dress in the company, but it was five sizes larger than I wear.” With the help of a local seamstress, Brittney brought it down to her size and loved how comfortable she felt. “It was like coming home after a long day. I just felt very me in it.”

Guests moved to another area of the yard for the reception, where round tables were set beneath café lights on the lawn. Since Brittney and Kyle wanted a fresh, spring-inspired feel for their party, they chose all-white linens and monochromatic floral arrangements in clear glass vases.

Each place setting included a mini bottle of champagne, another nod to the bride’s blue dress and a repeated detail that she loved from her bachelorette party.

The bride and groom chose a long head table, which was decorated with a greenery garland. As the sun started to set, guests took their seats to enjoy the couple’s meal of salmon or steak with rice pilaf, green beans, asparagus ravioli, and wines from Van Ruiten Winery, which is owned by the bride’s family’s friends.

The newlyweds shared their first dance to Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me.”

For dessert, the couple served a three-tiered wedding cake with delicious, unexpected flavors: rum-chocolate cake with mocha filling, pink champagne cake with strawberries, and vanilla cake with chocolate filling. They even chose a vintage bride and groom cake topper!

Guests spent the evening dancing, but took breaks to pose for photos in the couple’s photo booth.

Following their big day, the bride and groom honeymooned in Capri, Italy. “Don’t forget the most important detail about your wedding: You’re starting a life together,” Brittney advises. “I have a cherished lifelong friend who continuously reminded me of this throughout planning. I am endlessly grateful for that.”

How to Get the Wedding of Your Dreams When Planning from Afar

Destination Wedding in Paris, Couple Portraits

Photo: Dan Petrovice

Planning a wedding is hard work. From all the logistics and details to the budget to family drama, it’s a lot to handle all at once — especially when you’d much rather be focusing on how happy you are to have found the person you’ll spend your life with! Add in a few hundred miles of distance between you and your wedding venue, and it can get even more complicated. After all, how can you be sure everything you want is going to actually happen on your wedding day? We asked our experts for a few destination wedding tips brides and grooms should really keep in mind.

When it comes to planning your destination wedding, communication is key. While you could meet with a local vendor in person to review design boards, play with color swatches, and browse albums of their past work, all of that is much harder to do over the phone or in an email. Use visual tools, whether it’s Pinterest, Google Drive, or more traditional PDFs and Word documents, to try to illustrate your vision in addition to describing it in words. If you’re using documents that don’t update in real time (like a Google Doc), include the date in the name of the file or at the top of the document so you’ll know who is looking at the most recent version. This will help keep your changes in sequential order and ensure your vendors are working from your newest updates instead of the design board from a few weeks ago.

If you’re having phone meetings, make sure you’re focused! Instead of taking calls in the car, set aside a time when you’ve got your full attention on the wedding, so you can take notes on what you’re discussing, as well as make sure you don’t miss something your vendors are thinking about because you’re trying to find your next turn. Speaking of notes, once you’re off the phone, type up and email the notes to the vendor in question as a recap of your call. This way the two of you can clarify anything that remained undecided and make sure everyone is on the same page.

Most importantly, hire vendors you trust. Whether it’s a recommendation from your planner, your venue’s favorite baker, or a photographer your florist adores, use the knowledge of your team to help crowdsource other vendors that will all work well together and deliver a fabulous final product. Do your research, from browsing their galleries to chatting with recent clients for an honest review of their services, so you know what you’re getting. A well-qualified and trustworthy vendor will both deliver a great product and be better equipped to understand and execute your vision. And, you’ll trust that they do great work, so you’ll know that even the details you don’t itemize will be expertly taken care of on your wedding day.

Why Joanna Gaines Refuses to Upgrade Her Engagement Ring

Chip and Joanna Gaines

This Fixer Upper star is sooo not interested in fixing up her engagement ring. In her opinion, her special sparkler is perfect just the way it is! HGTV’s Joanna Gaines just revealed the super sweet way the engagement ring on her finger (from her Fixer Upper co-star and hubby, Chip Gaines) came to be — and why there’s nothing in this world that could get her to change it.

It’s not unusual for couples to give their engagement rings a bit of a spruce to celebrate an anniversary or the fact that they’re no longer young and broke. (Wedding planning is expensive, y’all…) But although Gaines has made her career overhauling real estate properties, you won’t catch this design expert upgrading her engagement ring. “I was able to pick out a nice round diamond and a beautiful, antique-looking platinum setting,” she says of her original sparkler in an from her new book, The Magnolia Book, as told to Cosmpolitan.com. After her future hubby Chip proposed, he whisked her away to a nearby jewelry store, where the jeweler was there waiting to help the couple customize a beautiful engagement ring for Joanna.

But since the ring was going to take some time to complete, the jeweler lent the bride-to-be a substitute sparkler to wear at her impromptu engagement party. “It was a great big, gaudy fake diamond that he’d put together so I would have something to show off to my friends and family,” remembers Gaines. “Of course they were all taken aback by the size of my ‘diamond.’ It’s funny to me that, even way back then, they all seemed to realize that a flashy ring just wasn’t my style. They expected to see me wearing something a little subtler, a little smaller, a little more classic maybe.” A.K.A exactly like the beautiful bauble Gaines ended up with! “We strung them along for a good long while, and we all had a good laugh when Chip finally revealed that the ring was fake,” said Gaines, but 12 years later this lucky lady actually got the opportunity to sport a sparkler similar to her ‘fake-out ring.’

See More: How Long Do You Have to Wait to Upgrade Your Engagement Ring?

On their anniversary over a decade later, Gaines found that exact same jeweler sitting on her porch with a black velvet tray of dazzling diamonds. “‘Chip wants you to upgrade,’ he said to me.” Ummm, can we just interject here to state that this is our dream scenario?! But as it turns out, it wasn’t Gaines’. “I looked him in the eye, and I said, ‘I’m sorry, but no. This is the original diamond I picked, and it’s perfect just the way it is.'” We can’t even fault her for turning down a megawatt ring, because that sentiment is just too darn sweet!

“It wasn’t a ‘perfect’ diamond,” Gaines is sure to point out. “But it was perfect for me… To me, my ring is part of our story.”

Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Camilla Belle, and Mandy Moore Are Our Newest Bridal Beauty Inspirations

Jenna Dewan-Tatum at Variety‘s Power of Women Luncheon: It would be hard to get more perfectly on-trend than Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s look. From the rose gold shadow to the radiant skin (nevermind the eyelash-skimming fringe!), it’s perfect for a wedding day look. To mimic her glow, use a finishing powder with a radiant finish, and a cream blush will help keep your cheek color in place all day without any settling. For the eyes, wet your brush before applying a rose gold eyeshadow to your lids and under the lower lashes — this helps make the metallic finish pop.

Camilla Belle at the 7th Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic: Who says simple makeup can’t make a big impact? Take your cues from Camilla Belle for a look that offers plenty of wow without a lot of product. First, buff a lightweight foundation into your skin with a wet makeup sponge and then use a coral blush along the cheek bones. Highlight the high points of the face making sure you use plenty under the eye area. Tightline the upper and lower lash lines and apply a coat of mascara. Well-groomed brows and a semi-matte watermelon-colored lipstick finish the look.

Mandy Moore at the 7th Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic: I think it’s safe to say ‘trend alert’! Understated makeup with a bright lip is definitely happening, and apropos for any style wedding. For Mandy Moore’s take on the trend, use a light pink blush on the apples of your cheeks and be sure to use a setting spray so that your luminous skin doesn’t begin looking overly shiny as the day progresses. For the lipstick, look for a formula that is high shine, so you get a shiny finish that isn’t overly thick and sometimes messy like a gloss — you’ll be doing a fair amount of kissing after all!

Why Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell are Living Together Before Marriage

Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell living together before marriage

Even though they are both self-proclaimed “devout” Christians, The Bachelor‘s Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell aren’t shy about one thing — that they’re living together before marriage.

Besides the fact that it’s 2016 and it’s NBD, The Bachelor and his fiancé have some very good reasoning for their co-habitating decision. “Our life had really started out so abnormally, and it was going to be very difficult for us to spend time together with how fast our lives were moving,” he said. “Any amount of time we could be together to get to know each other better, which I think God would desire for us to do before we make that ultimate commitment,” Higgins told ET Online. Chilling out and enjoying engaged life before a walk down the aisle sounds like a great plan, especially when your relationship has been a televised whirlwind to the present day.

The reality stars’ new show Ben and Lauren: Happily Ever After? premiered on Freeform recently — with the first and second episodes focusing on the couple’s adjustment to “real life” post-Bachelor. “The storyline initially is ‘Are we going to be able to move past JoJo or not?'” Higgins said. “I think that’s a fair storyline, because it’s something that was a part of our life for a long time. But [people will] see us move on.”

Bushnell revealed in August that the pair is just starting the wedding planning process now. “We haven’t set a date,” she told Us Weekly. “We definitely started talking about it more, and I think we both agreed that August we actually want to sit down and start planning, so that includes setting a date, that includes the place. We have been throwing around some locations, and I think we’ve narrowed it down to the area that we want to get married. We’re thinking 2017.”

Though she may not know what her wedding dress will look like or where they’ll exchange vows, Bushnell did say that the couple is hoping to have their wedding filmed (shocker!). The good news is that we’ll be able to see how it all goes down — but until then, we’ll keep our eyes glued to Freeform for more wedding updates!
