Your bags are packed, you’re ready to go…But one more thing! Before you head to the airport for your honeymoon, take safety into consideration. Here, the expert honeymoon safety tips you need to be aware of, you’ll be glad to be prepared and confident as you set off on the trip of a lifetime. Bon voyage!
Use Credit Cards
Most people use plastic over paper these days anyway, but it’s essential during travel. Not only do many credit card companies offer special travel protection features, it beats carrying cash for safety and insurance reasons, too. Carry just enough cash for tips, or the off-chance occasion you need to purchase something where credit cards are not welcome. Be sure to also always opt for credit over debit — especially if your debit accounts are chock-full of post-wedding cash. Besides, earning points for all your travel purchases sweetens the deal — just be sure to select a card with no travel fees!
Reconsider Novelty Items
Sure, the Mr. & Mrs. matching tees, “Just Married” passport covers, and “Wifey” cover-ups are adorable, thoughtful, and you’ve definitely earned them, but those who choose to be SUPER cautious may want to rethink wearing them around town. Some travel experts warn that these items are an advertisement to pickpockets or thieves that you may have new money in your accounts, and new jewelry on your fingers.
Make Copies
Make copies of your passports, and have whomever isn’t carrying the actual passports carry the copies. This will come in handy if (gasp!) you misplace your passport during travel, as they’re as good as gold overseas. It can also pay to make note of where the nearest US Embassy is in case you do lose them. Trust us, most times in foreign countries your beloved drivers license just won’t cut it. You can leave the original passports in your room safe, and carry the copies as identification during your excursions, you’ll also need the copies for tourist tax benefits on larger purchases.
Utilize the Safe
Nearly every hotel we can think of has disclaimers posted that they are not responsible for lost, or stolen items. Because of this — and general safety concerns — be certain to utilize your hotel room’s safe. Make the combination something unique and personal to you as a couple — but avoiding birthdays and wedding dates. Whenever you leave the room, all cash, jewelry, passports, and other forms of ID should be placed in the safe. If your room does not have a safe, ask at the front desk if they have safety deposit options to rent for your stay for another secure option.
Think Before You Pack
As tempting as it is to pack your best dresses, bags, shoes and baubles, you might want to reconsider. Many brides opt to leave their new bling behind as a safety precaution, while others won’t leave the house without it. Consider that many European countries have issues with pickpockets, and also you may be spending lots of time at the beach or pool. So if you’re the type to err on the side of caution, it’s best to leave it at home in a safety deposit box, or with a relative. If you do decide to bring it with you, make sure it’s insured to be extra safe.
Emergency Contacts
Not to sound like your mother, but you should share your itinerary (as specific as possible!) with at least one other person staying back in the states. This should have hotel names, dates, flight details, and any other information you think is important. It’s not too difficult to keep in touch these days, regardless of location — thanks to the genius that is WiFi — but you can never be too careful. (Trust us — it will keep your parents happy, too!)
