Before setting eyes on his beyond beautiful wife, Camila Alves, Matthew McConaughey wasn’t sure he’d ever get married. “I had to get to the point where I saw [getting married] as more than just the thing to do,” the actor recalled in a previous interview. But all it really took was a quick glance at his goddess wife to seal the deal! McConaughey and Alves married in 2012 and now share three children together — and countless adorable moments on the red carpet. But as it turns out, there were some that never thought the two would eventually say “I do.” McConaughey just recently revealed how he proposed to his love — and how their family didn’t think she’d say yes!

The Free State of Jones actor popped the question to his now-wife while visiting his family during Christmas back in 2011. “I remember hitting the knee, looking into her eyes,” McConaughey recalled in the November issue of Esquire magazine. “I remember her face. I remember this smile coming up from her feet. I remember her having to catch her breath.” We’re already swooning at the sweetness, but apparently that catch-her-breath moment lasted just a beat too long!

“She didn’t say yes right away,” McConaughey revealed. “And then the whole family was going, ‘Jeezus, she’s gonna say no.'” Uh-oh!

But despite that sure-to-have-been nerve-wrecking moment, McConaughey and Alves got their happily ever after. And it seems like surprising popped question moments run in the McConaughey family. Previously, the actor shared the story of his parents’ unconventional engagement, explaining how his mother surprised his dad during a visit with his family. “When he got there, my mom — his girlfriend and not-yet-fiancé — answered the door. She said, ‘I’m going to fast-forward this situation,’ and handed him an invitation to their wedding. ‘You’ve got twenty-four hours,’ she said. ‘I’ll need a yes or a no.” So bold…

Guess it’s just a McConaughey family tradition?
