A Modern Museum Wedding Full of Bright Colors and Playful Patterns

When Lindsay and Brian decided to host their wedding at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis on August 22, 2015, they chose a space that was the perfect size for their intimate wedding (with only 125 guests in attendance), but was also an endless source of inspiration: gorgeous architecture, a crisp blank canvas, and a fabulous art collection that encouraged the couple to get creative with their design. “We wanted to incorporate a lot of color,” says Lindsay, who worked with Rocket Science Weddings & Events to create a modern, elegant celebration full of punchy hues and playful patterns. Eclectic details, asymmetric floral designs, and an awesome solution to the “band vs. DJ” dilemma came together for an evening full of fun! Brian and Lindsay ran with their colorful wedding theme, incorporating teal, hot pink, orange, and purple into all of their paper goods. The stripes and chevrons were a nod to the museum’s modern design, with the colors letting guests know they were in for an amazing night!

Lindsay paired her fit-and-flare gown with sparkling Vince Camuto pumps and a textured bouquet of orchids, ranunculus, garden roses, cockscomb, and succulents. Brian topped off his classic tux with a matching orchid boutonniere.

The couple had their first look on the museum’s rooftop just before a rain shower moved in. “We were supposed to have our ceremony on the roof, as well, but it was just as beautiful when we moved it inside,” says Lindsay.

The Jewish ceremony took place beneath a Lucite chuppah decorated with white hydrangeas, mums, and carnations. Lindsay and Brian signed a ketubah decorated with a modern, geometric cut-out of the Star of David. “Signing our ketubah was so warm and heartfelt. I’ll remember that moment forever,” says the bride.

Brian’s cousin, a rabbi, officiated the ceremony, and the couple’s brother and sister served as best man and maid of honor.

The tallit used during the ceremony holds special meaning for the bride: “It belonged to my father, who passed away.”

As guests headed to the reception, they found their table assignments hanging from a custom-built escort card display decorated with white hydrangeas and mums. “We wanted to give guests an idea of what was to come,” says Lindsay of the modern design. Each hexagonal card was one of three colors (orange, pink, and purple) to designate guests’ meal choices.

The attention to detail continued, with drink stirrers printed with drawings of cats to represent the bride and groom’s pets, Moses and Bing Bong. The stirrers were used in the two specialty cocktails named after the felines, the Moses Mule and the Bing-Bong-A-Rita. Guests also nibbled on custom fortune cookies, which were finished with bright ribbon and tags reading “Sayonara,” a nod to the pair’s upcoming honeymoon in Japan.

In the museum’s Skyline Room, the lights of the Minneapolis skyline lit the space and provided a stunning, dramatic backdrop. Tables were topped with champagne chevron linens, allowing the bright floral centerpieces to really pop. Color-blocked arrangements in a variety of sizes provided a unique look from every angle, mixing orchids and hydrangeas with succulents and tulips.

Instead of chargers, Lindsay and Brian chose oversized menu cards to place atop rectangle-folded napkins, leaving enough space to also set the silverware without blocking the details of the meal to come. Guests chose between sautéed sea bass, beef tenderloin, and a ratatouille napoleon.

“The flowers were such a wow-factor,” Lindsay remembers. “We used a lot of cool flowers in bright shades, like alstroemeria, proteas, and allium.”

For dessert, the newlyweds cut into a three-tiered carrot cake topped with a surprise from their wedding planner: A 3D-printed monogram cake topper!

“My parents wanted a band and we wanted a DJ, so our planner recommended Fusion by Rock With U, a DJ and band combination,” Lindsay says. “We had them put together a special set of songs we knew my step-dad, Steve, loves — he’s really into music!” And of course they did the hora!

“We are so glad we hired a wedding planner,” says the bride. “We wouldn’t have been able to create the look we wanted — or manage the stress — without Gretchen!”
