9 Destination Wedding Planning Tips You Haven't Heard Before

The seating arrangements are complete, your bags almost packed… it’s time to jet off to your fabulous destination wedding! You’ve been carefully stitching the details of your wedding together over the last year and read every blog on how to masterfully organize this special occasion, but there may be some items left off of those check lists you’ve downloaded.

Here are a few last-minute tricks and tips that will earn you that “best bride” badge and ensure your wedding will be smooth sailing and a rocking good time.

1. Send a token of appreciation (a simple thank you note does the trick!) to your wedding planner and photographer BEFORE you arrive for your wedding — they are the two who will be on their feet working all weekend. A sweet note will set a positive tone and let them know you acknowledge their hard work and dedication, and get them excited to go above and beyond for you on your wedding.

2. Sometimes luggage gets lost. It’s an extremely unfortunate situation. To avoid a full blown panic in the event yours does get lost, pack your wedding shoes and rehearsal dinner dress in your carry-on as a safety measure. This goes for your fiancé and bridal party, too! Ask them to pack their custom wedding threads in their carry-on so there’s no chance of a last minute fashion emergency.

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Air travel is extremely dehydrating — not only for your insides, but your outside too. Add moisturizing facial masks to your purse for use in-flight, lather your arms and legs in lotion once you reach altitude, and swap the complimentary champagne for good old H2O. Your bridal portraits will thank you.

4. Keeping your vendors hydrated is important as well! Your valued wedding team will be working in the hot sun all weekend, make sure they have plenty of refreshments throughout the set up days.

5. Make sure your guests are aware of any travel restrictions prior to departure, and that they’re greeted with a guide of local things to do, the wedding activities schedule, and transportation details, etc. The more they’re informed, the less they will look to you for help throughout the weekend. Don’t fret if you haven’t arranged for this, a modern day email to your guests before they hit the airport will be greatly appreciated.

6. Ignoring a rain plan in hopes the weather won’t act up is not recommended. Outline a backup rain plan BEFORE you take off for your wedding — if you leave it to the day before or even the morning of, you risk unavailability of rental tents as well as increased pre-marital stress levels. When you are certain of your plan B, you’ll be able to concentrate on other important wedding activities, like spending quality time with your guests.

7. Tropical and lake locales mean… mosquitos. Have your venue fog the property the day before and the morning of your wedding to keep those pesky insects at bay. For an added layer of protection, ask the catering staff to spray the bottom of your dining table linens with a Deet insect repellent so guests’ feet can remain bite-free and on the dance floor where they belong!

8. Provide a basket of amenities at each of your wedding events. Include items your guests may have forgotten at home or can’t easily buy locally, such as: sunscreen, Advil, Tums, allergy medication, bug spray, hand fans, feminine products, mints, kids coloring books and crayons, etc. It’s a nice gesture that goes a long way in making your guests feel comfortable.

9. Hire a golf cart for the weekend to escort your elderly guests to and from each wedding activity on the grounds. They are your most precious guests, and giving them a little hand during the weekend after traveling great distances will let them enjoy your wedding events for a longer timeframe.

The 3 Things a Bride Can't Ask Her Bridesmaids to Do

things you can't ask your bridesmaid to do

Photo: Getty Images

I’ll be the first to admit that bridal privilege has gotten a little out of hand in recent years. Yes, it’s your big day. Yes, in theory, the bride should get whatever she wants. But some Bridezilla-esque requests are, in my professional opinion, downright unreasonable.

You know you’ve read stories about crazy brides who drag all their girlfriends to a fitness bootcamp so they look better in their dresses, and brides who intentionally choose unflattering bridesmaid dresses to ensure they’ll be the prettiest girl up front. Or that one bride who asked her bridesmaids to pay for her $10,500 wedding dress. It’s horrible.

With that said, there are three things you cannot do, even if you’re the bride:

1. You can’t force your bridesmaids to spend money that they do not have.
This seems obvious, right? Unfortunately, too many brides forget how the expenses add up in the enthusiasm of planning their weddings. Not only do the members of the bridal party have to buy their dresses, shoes and any other accoutrement you’re requiring, but they may also have to pay for travel, accommodations, and take time off from work to be there for all of your wedding events. Adding on a destination bachelorette trip to the Dominican Republic a month before your wedding may just be the expense that breaks the piggy bank’s back. Even if your girls have room on their credit cards, they may feel a little bitter resentment about taking on the additional debt.

2. You cannot tell your bridesmaids to change their shape to fit into a dress of your choosing if it doesn’t work for the way they are built now.
No one chooses their friends based on their shape (I hope), and that means you have to be accommodating to your wedding party when you start shopping for bridesmaid dresses. If even one member of your wedding party would look really bad in the dress you’ve chosen, find another dress that you like. You’ve asked them to do you the honor of being a bridesmaid, you don’t have the right to ask them to lose weight, work out, or wear something that makes them feel uncomfortable and unattractive. Most friends will suck it up (and suck it in) to make the bride happy, but they will likely be miserable for the entire event, knowing they not only look terrible, but they’re being photographed from every angle in the offending dress.

3. You cannot ask a member of your wedding party to change their appearance in a way that they can’t undo after your reception is finished.
Recently, BRIDES covered the bridezilla who asked a bridesmaid to dye her hair to match the rest of the wedding party. The bridesmaid, a natural red head, was horrified, and rightly so. That’s a completely unfair and unreasonable request. You knew what your friends looked like when you asked them to be in your wedding party. If you’re crazy enough to want something as drastic as a change to hair color, the bridesmaid should have been told before she accepted the invitation to be in your wedding.

Honeymoon Idea: 3 Days in Los Angeles

Photo: Getty Images

Los Angeles may not be the first place that springs to mind when one thinks of honeymoon romance, but the City of Angels has it all, especially for those on the active side. Intimate star-strewn restaurants, powdery beaches, mountain trails, incredible food, and art. It’s also home to some of the best year-round weather known to man, so it might be time to consider heading to sunny SoCal for your mini honeymoon. Before visiting Los Angeles, however, decide what part of the city most interests you, since it’s massive and traffic, you may have heard, can be as stressful as those months of wedding planning.

Day one:
Afternoon: Are the two of you beach people? Check into Shutters, just across the sand from Santa Monica’s best waves. Want a hip Westside crowd? Go for the Hotel Erwin in Venice. For a luxurious experience, there’s the plush Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, or the iconic pink Beverly Hills Hotel. Or if you’re more into a cool city scene, opt for The Line in Koreatown or The Ace Downtown. Once you’ve chosen your stomping grounds, have a wander around your temporary ‘hood. (Or hit the beach or pool.) Each area is full of spots just waiting to be explored, especially Venice’s creative, design-heavy Abbot Kinney Boulevard and the arty streets of downtown.

Evening: The best sunset views are had from High Rooftop Lounge at the Erwin, but it’s possible to glimpse the colorful sky from any high place. Commissary, at The Line, is one of the most Instagrammed restaurants around, and for good reason. Its design, greenhouse environment, creative dishes and fresh cocktails by chef Roy Choi (of the Kogi BBQ truck, which is also still driving around) are awe-inspiring, making it a memorable dinner destination. Otherwise, amp up the romance at the beloved Little Door in Brentwood, with an intimate meal of duck confit with honey and ginger or grilled sea bass with Mediterranean-French flair, and a great bottle of red wine.

Day two:
Morning: Hike off your dinner with a beautiful walk through massive red rocks in Topanga Canyon, and visit the dreamy waterfall-side Inn of the Seventh Ray for healthy, creative omelettes and quiche. (An alternate hiking destination for Eastsiders: Griffith Observatory, which is close to the iconic Hollywood Sign and also affords awesome views.)

Afternoon: To see LA’s most picturesque beaches, a bit of a road trip is in order. Head up the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu—Surfrider if you want to watch wetsuit-clad figures hit the waves, or El Matador for swimsuit shoot-worthy drama. Swing by the landmark biker stop Neptune’s Net for a bite of fried anything with a beer. After sunning your buns, head to Nobu, where groups and couples gather for live acoustic music and bottles of wine in the canyons.

Evening: Check the schedule at The Greek and the Hollywood Bowl, LA’s two iconic amphitheaters. There’s nothing like a balmy night of live music under the stars. Otherwise, try West Hollywood’s latest hot spot, Norah. Reservations can be tough, but eclectic, Southern-tinged dishes such as uni butter poached shrimp, cauliflower popcorn, and octopus with pork belly are worth the effort. In Beverly Hills, Avec Nous is a new French restaurant at the Viceroy L’Ermitage with retro glamour, a Champagne cart, and decadent bites like foie gras and escargot. For a taste of nightlife, there’s Nighthawk, a new venue in Hollywood serving up boozy cereal milk cocktails, among other innovative concoctions.

Day three:
Morning: You’re in LA, so indulge in a hangover-killing brunch. The recently reopened Belvedere at the Peninsula in Beverly Hills does the ritual justice; for a less posh meal, try a Venice favorite like Tasting Kitchen (don’t skip the Bloody Marys) or Gjusta, which will likely require some patience during the wait, to order a feast of smoked fish, pastries, egg sandwiches, rotisserie meats, and slices of pizza. After brunch, take a walk on the beach, soak up the sea breeze and shop Abbot Kinney.

Afternoon: People accuse LA of having no culture, but in fact it’s become quite the art hub. Those who appreciate it will love a visit to the Broad Museum (check out the Infinity Room) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, conveniently located across the street from each other downtown. Between visits, try lunch at Otium, a winning new restaurant by a former French Laundry chef de cuisine. Make a reservation so you can taste his foie gras with funnel cake and spinach bucatini, alongside a fruity rye whisky Fix punch.

Bride Breastfeeds Her Daughter in the Middle of Her Wedding

Oh the benefits of strapless wedding dresses… They keep you cool in the summer months, show off those gorgeous arms of yours, and are quite convenient when you need to pause mid-ceremony for an impromptu breastfeeding. Okay, maybe that last feature hasn’t exactly crossed your mind until now, but one bride in Montreal discovered that nifty little benefit when her nine-month-old daughter began fussing at her wedding ceremony — and she lowered her gorgeous gown right then and there to feed her little one!

A bride knows she has to be prepared for any mid-wedding hiccup that might occur during her big day and Christina Torino-Benton handled hers in stride. When this super mom’s flower girl — her baby daughter Gemma — began crying in the middle of her June 18 wedding to her childhood sweetheart Danny Benton, she turned to her new hubby and said, “It’s happening.” She then subtly slipped her breast out of her wedding dress at the Resurrection of Our Lord Church and began breastfeeding. Hey, a good bride makes sure all of her wedding guests eat, right?

“I made it work… I had to!” the bride told The Huffington Post. “Danny has always been so incredibly supportive on this breastfeeding journey, so he just nodded in agreement.” Due to their noon nuptials, little Gemma was forced to give up her afternoon nap — which made for a very unhappy flower girl. But after just a few minutes of breastfeeding with her mama, Christina’s daughter fell into a deep slumber for the rest of the ceremony. “This is something that has become so natural in my life that I didn’t even have to think about it,” Torino-Benton told People of the mid-ceremony feeding. “She needed me, so I was there.”

The couple’s wedding photographer Lana Nimmons ended up capturing a snapshot of the bride’s supermom moment (below) and posted it to a breastfeeding support group on Facebook. The pic (see below) has since gone viral, garnering countless likes and tons of kind words towards this beautiful bride.

“If I could breastfeed in a Catholic church during a wedding, maybe other women will feel more comfortable to do the same just about anywhere,” muses Torino-Benton to Self. “You should be able to feed your baby no matter where you are, I don’t think anywhere should be considered inappropriate.”

A word to the wise: Just make sure you get yourself a strapless wedding dress for easy access, first!

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Shawn Booth Had a Wedding Weekend! See the Stunning Photos

Former Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe just walked down the aisle! But, er, not in a wedding dress exactly. The reality TV star and her fiancé and final rose recipient Shawn Booth spent this past weekend at a wedding — and we’d be lying if we didn’t say this got us painfully excited for their own big day!

Bristowe served as a bridesmaid in the wedding of her close friend, and of course Booth tagged along to serve as her handsome date. The Vancouver, Canada, wedding was held at the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology Pacific Spirit Park, People reports, and, from the looks of these social media photos, was all kinds of gorgeous.

“OMG GET MARRIED ALREADY #jesandkyle,” Bristowe, 31, captioned the cute couple shot (photo above) of her looking absolutely gorg in a lavender-looking bridesmaid dress with 29-year-old Booth — in a crisp suit with a solo cup in his hand — on her arm.

The former Bachelorette shared another Instagram of her close-up bridesmaid beauty look, thanking her glam squad in the caption. “Shout out to @alldolledupstudio for doing an unbelievable job on our make up for the wedding yesterday,” she wrote. “Side note- I cried about 13 times and not once did my make up run.”

Bristowe also shared a photo (see below) of the beautiful bride twirling on the dance floor with her new hubby, accompanied by a sentimental caption: “Our world is in need of more true, beautiful love stories. I believe if we had more true, beautiful love stories, we would have a better world. Jes and Kyle, your story is one of those beautiful love stories.” – Jes’ Mom. I absolutely loved being a part of this perfect day. Bessy cat you’re one beautiful bride. #jesandkyle

According to People, Bristowe and Booth also took to Snapchat to document their PDA-filled evening of twirling each other around and kissing on the dance floor.

Natch, this wedding weekend for the two of them has us dreaming up their own big day. But, unfortunately for us, these two seem to be in no hurry. “The pressure doesn’t get to us at all,” Booth told People in February. “We only knew each other for ten weeks before I proposed. We’re both normal people and the most normal thing we can do is wait.”

“We’re living together, we’re enjoying being engaged. When we start to plan, we’ll let everybody know!” Bristowe added.

The pair has been taking things slow since the show ended (well as slow as you can take your relationship when it starts with an engagement ring), only recently deciding to move-in together. They’ve even created their own celebrity couple name. “We call ourselves the Boothstowes,” the former Bachelorette explained to People. “But when I get married, I’m going to take his name. I’m not a traditional person, but when it comes to that, I like the idea of being traditional. I think it’s romantic.”

This Couple Combined a Vineyard Bash and a City Celebration Into One San Francisco Wedding

Lindsey and Grayson first met online in early January of 2013. “Grayson had moved to Oklahoma City a couple of years prior for work, and I had recently moved back home following law school,” Lindsey says. “We are still amazed that we had never crossed paths before as we quickly discovered we have several friends in common.” After a very successful first date — they were supposed to meet for drinks, but enjoyed each other’s company so much the evening turned into a three-hour long dinner! — Lindsey called her mother to tell her she’d have to come up with a new story for how she met her future husband. “Match.com just wouldn’t do! But now not a single day passes that I don’t thank my lucky stars he and I happened upon each other.”

Two years later, in November of 2014, Grayson popped the question while the pair enjoyed a post-Thanksgiving hike near Lindsey’s family home in San Francisco. As they considered locations for their September 5, 2015, wedding, the winner was a no-brainer: “Grayson and I both love San Francisco and have both lived in the Bay Area at different times. We chose a long weekend so our guests could make a short vacation of it and really experience our favorite city.” The bride and groom worked with Elise Johnson of Shannon Leahy Events to plan a sophisticated, romantic garden party inside the Asian Art Museum — from 1,600 miles away! “Elise gave us all the tools and insight we needed to make every single wedding decision,” the bride says. “In addition to having impeccable taste and a knack for negotiating, she has the patience of a saint. Having such a reliable support system in our planned allowed us to enjoy the process much more than we would have been able to otherwise.”

See how their day came together below, as captured by the ever-talented Coco Tran!

Although they were initially torn between a wine country wedding and a sophisticated city bash, Lindsey and Grayson’s planner helped them choose a chic venue in the heart of San Francisco that would allow them to combine their favorite aspects of each type of party. They invited 115 guests to a ceremony at the Grace Cathedral, a beautiful church the bride had been thinking about since she was a teenager. “I always wondered what it would be like to be married there,” she says. “It’s truly a breathtaking place.”

For their reception, Lindsey and Grayson chose the Asian Art Museum, noting it’s beautiful architecture as one of the main draws. “It has a clean and natural but with a sophisticated feel,” says the bride. “It almost felt like we went back in time.”

A navy and peach color palette, complete with bronze and rose gold accents, quickly emerged as the couple began planning their day, so this pretty invitation suite from Yonder Designs gave guests an idea of what was to come throughout the day.

Lindsey did her homework before she started shopping for her dress. In fact, on the evening before her first bridal appointment, the bride-to-be and her sister poured over photos of wedding dresses while watching Love Actually, searching for inspiration, and came across a Chantilly lace gown from Monique Lhuillier that stood out from all the rest. “I didn’t think I’d actually be able to see it in the store the next day, so when it was there and I tried it on for my mom and sister, we all just knew,” Lindsey says.

As beautiful as her wedding dress, complete with an asymmetric horsehair peplum, was on it’s own, Lindsey didn’t skip out on accessories. She wore her mother’s tanzanite and diamond ring as her something borrowed and blue and carried a beaded handbag that once belonged to her groom’s grandmother. “As is my family’s tradition, my father also place a sixpence in my shoe just before the ceremony,” the bride says.

The bride’s bouquet was a colorful arrangement of peach, blush, and coral blooms, including garden roses, ranunculus, parrot tulips, and stock, all tied together with a silk ribbon.

“Grayson looked so debonair!” Lindsey says of her groom, who wore a classic black tuxedo by Zegna. His textured boutonniere was made of peach flowers, kumquats, and greenery.

Lindsey’s bridesmaids stunned in asymmetrical navy gowns from Alfred Sung while her maid of honor chose a black gown with off-the-shoulder straps by La Petite Robe di Chiara Boni. Each carried a smaller version of the bride’s bouquet with the addition of colorful kumquats.

The ladies all looked great next to Grayson’s groomsmen, who all wore traditional black tuxedos and floral boutonnieres.

Since Lindsey and Grayson wanted the beauty of the cathedral to speak for itself, they chose to only have two floral arrangements decorating the space. Although just the father of the bride walked her down the aisle, Lindsey’s mother also joined them at the aisle and helped lift the bride’s veil. “I’ll never forget that moment,” she says.

The bride and groom chose to recite traditional vows, going so far as to even memorize their words. “I’ll admit it was a bit stressful, but I’m so happy we did it,” Lindsey says. “The moment we said them to each other naturally, as if they were our own words, is one I hope never to forget.”

The pair chose a few special readings to help personalize the ceremony, though. They chose Corinthians 13: 1-13 and a passage from Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables.

Everyone enjoyed a trolley ride to the reception, where guests were greeted with delicious cocktail hour fare, including local oyster, bacon tart, lobster rolls, and burrata crostini. Lindsey and Grayson also served two signature drinks: Hers, a gin Paloma, and his, a classic Manhattan.

A three-piece jazz band kept everyone entertained as they found their tented escort cards.

Once inside the great hall for the reception, guests were treated to an entirely different look. Rectangular tables were decorated with ivory linens and a bold navy and white floral runner. Lush, low centerpieces comprised of lisianthus, garden roses, privet branches, stock, and kumquats covered the tabletops, while other square tables were adorned with tall mixes of the same blooms.

Place settings featured classic white china over rose gold chargers, which were paired with classic crystal glassware and rose gold flatware. “The room glowed in warm candlelight and smelled like a rose garden,” Lindsey remembers. “The rose gold tones were echoed in the warm uplighting and called attention to the impressive stone details.”

The newlyweds treated their guests to a multi-course meal of heirloom tomato tart, roasted salmon, pork two ways, and a lentil blitz. The bride’s sister (and maid of honor!) handled the booze, though: “She’s a sommelier and took complete control and handled all the wine for the wedding,” Lindsey says. “It was a relief to hand that off and she did an amazing job.” For dessert, the bride and groom sliced into a four-tier vanilla bean wedding cake, which was filled with peaches with cream cheese filling and raspberries with mascarpone cream cheese filling.

Lindsey also surprised Grayson with a groom’s cake. “He’s a geologist and loves all maps, so I ordered a vintage map sheet cake of Mississippi, where he grew us, as well. It was perfect and he loved the surprise,” the bride says.

The new Mr. and Mrs. shared their first dance to Ray LaMontagne’s “You Are the Best Thing” before their 10-piece band took over, drawing guests young and old out onto the dance floor. To keep the party going, Lindsey and Grayson arranged for a late-night snack of buttermilk fried chicken biscuit bites with honey.

“Show your gratitude,” Lindsey reminds future brides. “Looking back, there are moments that I would like to tell myself to get a grip and remind myself to simple express my thanks. It’s easy to lose perspective when you’re in the wedding planning weeds. Pull yourself out and thank your fiancé, families, and friends for their love and support.”

Do Guests Need to Tip Anyone at a Wedding?

do wedding guests tip

Photo: Getty Images

While the bride and groom know they’ll need to tip their vendors at the end of their wedding day, guests probably aren’t arriving with change in their pockets to hand out to servers and staff members throughout the evening. Is that totally acceptable, or are wedding guests everywhere committing a huge faux pas? Our experts weigh in on whether guests need to tip anyone at someone else’s wedding.

Between the cost of goods and services, fees, service charges, and the tips distributed by the newlyweds, anyone working at a wedding is pretty well covered when it comes to being compensated for their work and time. So the short answer is, no, guests are not obligated to tip anyone at a wedding. However, of course, there are a few exceptions — so keep some ones in your pocket!

If the venue has valet parking, you may want a few dollars available to tip the valet attendant. You probably won’t need to pay to have your car parked, but just like at a hotel or restaurant, a small tip would be greatly appreciated!

You should also be sure to have cash with you if the reception will include a cash bar for either part or all of the evening. In this instance, your interaction with the bartender is more like one at a bar than a private event, so tip accordingly.

Did the bride and groom spring for an open bar? You probably will not see a tip jar on the bar, and there’s a good chance the bartending company or venue doesn’t allow their employees to accept tips in this situation. If you receive particularly great service, you can offer the bartender a tip, but know that they may not be able to accept it. Don’t force the money on them (and risk them getting into trouble later!), but instead thank them profusely and make sure the couple knows how great the service was.

It seems like just yesterday we were giggling at Josh Peck’s comedic antics on the hit Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh. But now, at 29 years old, Peck is entering a new phase of his life — one that now involves his beautiful bride-to-be! The Grandfathered actor recently proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Paige O’Brien, who announced the wonderful engagement news on her Instagram page captioning, “MOODY’S POINT,” as she flashed her gorgeous engagement ring to the camera. “Thanks for the pic @samsperbeck thanks for the ring @shuapeck.”

The Hollywood duo must share the same sense of humor because that was one of the most casual engagement announcements we’ve ever seen! Regardless, the black and white picture of the happy couple shows that their love is anything but a joke. And we mean, LOOK AT THAT RING. There is nothing comical about a stunning rock like that.

Peck hasn’t yet released a public statement confirming the engagement, but according to E! News, “Paige thanked a follower after receiving a congratulations message,” before she made her account private on Sunday evening. And even though the Drake and Josh star hasn’t posted anything on HIS Instagram account about the engagement, he sure isn’t afraid to show his affection for his longtime love, as evidenced by the Insta below.

Some are speculating that the pair may actually have been engaged for a while now, as O’Brien was spotted wearing the same engagement ring a few months ago on social media. But TBH, we wouldn’t blame them for wanting to make the news more private in order to share it with their closest friends and family first.

Here’s to hoping this is one Hollywood romance that is set to last! P.S. Peck, can we plan your wedding/score an invite? We promise we won’t fangirl too much over you and Drake Bell…
