Ever Wonder Why People Wear Wedding Rings on Their Left Hand?

wedding ring on left hand

Photo: Nicole Wright via Instagram

It’s pretty much accepted at this point in time that everyone wears their wedding ring on the left ring finger. But why? And do bride and grooms absolutely have to? Here, the story behind left hand ring placement and whether or not you have to follow this custom.

The story of wearing your wedding ring on the left hand can be traced back to ancient Roman and Greek times (really!). Back in that day, the Romans believed that the vein in the ring finger (the fourth finger) on the left hand ran directly to one’s heart. Because of this belief, they called that vein the “vena amoris” or vein of love. Naturally, to solidify a union based on love, they’d place the ring on that finger that housed the vein of love to signify the romance the newly married couple shares. A pretty adorable physical representation of two hearts being connected, don’t you think?

Western cultures have pretty much accepted this age old wives tale to be true, wearing the engagement and then the wedding rings on that left ring finger. Many people in Europe, however, choose to wear their wedding rings on the right hand’s ring finger. Ultimately, the choice is yours!

As for wearing a wedding ring, it’s completely up to your personal preference, but it’s of course a nice way to symbolize your union. If not, you may make like some celebs and get a tattoo on that finger to signify your marriage — you can even do both if you want!

It’s not on another continent, but Laguna Beach, California, has all the ingredients for a hot, sexy mini beach honeymoon. Surf, sand, spas, and dining under the stars make this seaside spot in Orange County, known for both its hippie roots and bevy of reality TV blondes, a the perfect spot for a blissful beach getaway. Relax surf-side or head out for dress up for a night out on the town in this versatile, laid back town with our 3 day itinerary for an ideal weekend honeymoon.

Day one:
Afternoon: The nearest airport is in Long Beach, and Los Angeles and San Diego are each about an hour and a half away, but don’t worry, the drive along the coast is picturesque. Check into Montage Laguna Beach for a seaview and resort feel, or the brand-new Ranch at Laguna Beach for luxe canyon vibes just across the street from the sand. Pool or beach time should be at the top of your list.

Evening: Sunset is a magical moment in Laguna, and everyone stops to watch wherever they are. The Deck is a perfectly positioned beachside destination for catching the spectacle with a cocktail—try the Silver Surfer—in hand. Try Driftwood Kitchen next door for dinner, or another of the town’s favorite eateries like Las Brisas. Ask for a window table for the view and soundtrack of crashing waves, and splurge on martinis with blue cheese-stuffed olives, and a seafood tower overflowing with lobster, crab legs, oysters and more.

Day two:
Morning: The surf’s almost always up in Laguna, and there are nearby beginner’s breaks too, so try out your skills during a surf lesson or test your balance on a standup paddle board outing. Landlubbers can play a round of golf at Ben Brown’s golf course in picturesque Aliso Canyon.

Afternoon: After casual lunch of fresh Mexican at local favorite La Sirena Grill or street tacos at Papa’s, walk the steps down to Table Rock beach, a hidden spot for sunbathing, swimming (if the swell isn’t too strong) and photo ops—the waves crashing into the rock formations are epic. Don’t forget snacks and icy drinks!

Evening: A dinner at Studio instantly makes for a special occasion. The five-star fine-dining restaurant represents the height of romance and puts sophisticated spins on modern French and California cuisine. It’s pricy but impeccable, from the service to the ever-changing dishes savored while overlooking the Pacific. Leave space for a cheese course before dessert! If you’re looking for a fun after-dinner spot, Marine Room offers has live music, and Sandpiper is a classic, friendly dive.

Day three:
Morning: Fuel up for a hike or swim with an insanely satisfying Smoked Bourbon-Bacon Cinnamon Roll at The Ranch, part of their excellent breakfast menu. Or if ultimate honeymoon relaxation is what you seek, visit Spa Montage for the Romantic Couple’s Journey, which incorporates a marine mineral bath, body polish, and his-and-hers massages.

Afternoon: Stroll up and down the Pacific Coast Highway, where beachy boutiques and galleries—plus the excellent Laguna Art Museum—line the streets. If you’re feeling frisky, join a sandy game of volleyball at Main Beach.

Evening: Watch your last sunset from Crescent Bay or The Rooftop at Casa del Camino, where 360 degree views call for a couple of glasses—or bottle!—of bubbly, alongside tasty bites such as Hawaiian ahi poke, and bacon-wrapped dates. In the moment it’s hard to imagine anything more beautiful than the fiery orange sun dipping below the white-capped ocean.

Olivia Wilde Reveals the Wedding Makeup Staple Grooms Hate (At Least According to Jason Sudeikis)

Olivia Wilde Shares Makeup Look Jason Sudeikis Hates

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis may be in no rush to get to that altar (they’ve been engaged for over three years now!), but when they do finally say their vows, at least we know what the actress’ wedding-day beauty look probably won’t include! Wilde just revealed what makeup look her fiancé isn’t a particular fan of — and it’s such a bridal beauty staple!

We’ll always love a bold, red lip to complement a white wedding dress. The bridal beauty look is classic, timeless, effortlessly chic — and, according to Olivia Wilde, totally hated by men!

The Vinyl actress recently divulged to People magazine that her hubby-to-be is put off by a vibrant lip look. “He doesn’t love it,” Wilde said of Sudeikis. In fact, she thinks most guys would pass when it comes to punchy puckers. “All men are terrified of lipstick,” she said. “But girls don’t get dressed up for guys — we get dressed up for girls. So I wear whatever I think looks best.” Sorry grooms! But give us lipstick or give us death! (Or a pre-nup…)

olivia wilde gif

Okay, so we can kinda see where the grooms of the world are coming from. Who really wants a smeared mouth of red lipstick after going in for that first kiss? But need we remind you there are long-wear, non-transfer lipsticks out there, people?!

So what does this bride-to-be suggest instead? Well, her tired-and-true makeup look consists of a classic cat eye paired with a sheer lip. (The Revlon spokesmodel is a fan of the brand’s Super Lustrous Lipstick Sheers Collection in the Pink Truffle hue.) “I know [it] won’t need a ton of maintenance and has a hint of color so I’m not totally washed out,” explained Wilde. Okay, we gotta admit, that also sounds quite pretty. And not to mention… bridal! Can you and Sudeikis please get on those wedding plans already, Wilde?!

“I think that for a lot of women it’s not about disguising yourself,” the actress continued. “It’s just about giving yourself a little bump in confidence.” And nothing looks better on a bride than confidence!

One Couple Said "I Do" in an Elegant Fall Wedding in Florida

Delaine Wingfield and Michael Williams were set up on their first date by her cousin and his best friend in June of 2008. They met at a local IHOP restaurant, and although Michael tried, the two didn’t connect again after that first meal. Nearly four years later, on New Year’s Eve in 2011, Delanie and Michael both found themselves at the wedding of the couple that first introduced them. After Delaine reintroduced herself, the two hit it off and Michael wasted no time in asking her on a second date the very next day.

Three years later (to the day!), Michael proposed to Delaine at the St. Petersburg pier on New Year’s Eve of 2014. The bride-to-be had already been dreaming of her wedding day for quite some time, so with the help of Royal Events & Services, this couple created their dream classic Southern wedding with a touch of glamour. Take a look at the gorgeous details of their October 4, 2015, wedding at The Lange Farm in Dade City, Florida, as photographed by Sawyer Baird Photography.

Just two days after getting engaged, this bride said “yes” to her form fitting lace wedding dress by Maggie Sottero. “My mom got teary eyed and the rest is history,” Delaine says. She also chose an incredible lace bolero made from the same delicate fabric as her dress. “It wasn’t ready until two days before the wedding. I was so stressed out. Kudos to the team at the bridal salon for saving the day!”

Her bouquet featured a mix of roses, anemones, dahlias, and succulents. A piece of fabric from the mother-of-the-bride’s own wedding dress was wrapped around the stem of her bouquet, adding the perfect sentimental touch.

Michael wore a three piece navy suit paired with a gray bow tie and gun metal cufflinks. The final touch to his look was a rose gold Fossil watch, gifted to him by the bride on the morning of the wedding.

The bridesmaids’ Belsoie dresses had lace v-neck bodices that were paired with flowing silk chiffon skirts. “I really wanted it to look like the girls were floating as they walked down the aisle,” Delanie says. The groomsmen coordinated with Michael in dark navy suits with gray ties and brown wingtip shoes.

When the ceremony began, the couples’ parents and grandparents walked down the lengthy aisle to “Ribbon in the Sky” by Stevie Wonder. The bridal party then made an entrance as “We Can Take the World” by Johnny Swim played. Finally, as a live singer began performing “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, all eyes were on Delaine. “I wanted a dramatic walk,” she says. In order to include the two important men in her life, the bride asked her step father to escort her halfway down the aisle, where her father was waiting to walk her to the altar.

Once there, the duo exchanged traditional wedding vows. “We felt like the traditional vows summed up the covenant of marriage more deeply than we could have articulated ourselves,” the bride says. “We wanted our wedding day to be a reflection of our faith.”

At the reception, round and rectangular tables with white linens and gold sparkly table runners filled the room. Crystal chandelier centerpieces ranged in height from table to table and were topped with spheres of stunning ivory and burgundy flowers.

A DJ and live band kept guests on the dance floor all night. Because the bride and groom wanted to show their grandparents just how much they mean to each of them, Delaine shared her first dance of the night with her grandfather while Michael asked his grandmother to join him for a twirl. Then, attendees watched the happy couple share their own first dance to “Stay With You” by John Legend.

For dinner, there was no shortage of gourmet southern food including favorites like baked mac and cheese, fried chicken, cornbread, and biscuits. Attendees also enjoyed red velvet and key lime cake baked by Velvet Rose Cake Boutique.

All in all, some of the bride’s favorite memories of her wedding come from gathering all her loved ones together. Since it rained on the big day, the venue tried to move the ceremony indoors at the last minute. Luckily, the mother of the bride had her daughter’s back and stepped in to save the day. “My mother bolted out of the bridal suite and went a bit Momzilla, I love her for it!’ Delaine says. “I can’t get over feeling so loved by my family and friends.”

The Best Way to Handle a MIA Bridesmaid or Groomsman

MIA Groomsman

Being part of a friend’s wedding party is a lot of work, but so is being the one wrangling the bridesmaids and groomsmen! Whether it’s taking their time ordering their bridesmaid dress or groomsman tux or (gasp!) not RSVPing on time, it can be pretty frustrating when the ones standing by your side on your wedding day are the ones giving you the hardest time. So how should you handle the non-responsive members of your wedding party? Here are some tips from our experts.

Before you jump to conclusions and decide to fire someone, get in touch with the bridesmaid or groomsman in question and let them know that you really need them to be more responsive. With your wedding date fast approaching, you have every right to say you need a quicker response time and their help getting things checked off your to-do list.

Now is also the time to enlist your maid of honor and best man for help. The best way to avoid being a bride- or groom-zilla is to let someone else be the one sending out all the emails and making all the phone calls! Ask them to do the follow-up, and encourage them to stress how helpful it will be to you, the bride, if some of these details get taken care of ASAP. No one wants to cause a bride undue stress, so some encouragement could be just what they need.

If it’s really getting out of hand, consider a friendly ultimatum. Remind them why you asked them to be a part of your wedding day, and let them know how much their involvement means to you, but emphasize the work and time you’ve put into the celebration. Sure, a groomsman in the wrong color tie won’t ruin your wedding day, but after all of your effort to this point, a little extra effort on their part is well-deserved. And of course, if it seems that they won’t be able to handle the duties after all, offer them an out, and ask them if they’d rather attend as just a guest.

Kate Middleton Just Revealed Something Slightly Shocking About Her Marriage

There’s little to no doubt about the level of Kate Middleton’s flawlessness. Ever since the now-Duchess of Cambridge stole the heart of our teenage heartthrob, Prince William, took the bridal world by storm with her epic wedding dress, and then subsequently had two as-close-to-perfect-as-possible children, we’ve just come to accept the fact that Kate Middleton can do no wrong. But, well, we were wrong about that.

At a charity gala this week for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, the mother of Prince George and Princess Charlotte revealed to a group that she, um, kind of sucks at cooking — oh, and we should mention that the group she was talking to included Michelin-starred chefs, according to Vogue. “William has to put up with my cooking most of the time,” she reportedly said. Her husband confirmed: “It’s the reason I’m so skinny,” Prince William added, jokingly. Turns out, Kate ain’t no Betty Crocker.

kate middleton gif

In the Duchess’ defense, the Prince may be no more culinary-inclined: during their recent Indian tour, she refused to even taste the dosa he’d prepared, according to People.

Regardless of their ineptitude in the kitchen, Prince William and his beloved still do their own cooking, apparently — as recently as 2015, reports speculated that the royal couple did not employ a chef — in order to preserve their privacy.

kate middleton gif

Despite this new evidence to the contrary, we still think the Duchess of Cambridge is pretty much as close to perfect as possible. Just last week she re-wore something from her wedding day — no, not the Alexander McQueen wedding dress that launched a thousand long-sleeve lace wedding gowns, but her bespoke Robinson Pelham bridal earrings — and created an Internet sensation in doing so. Besides, who cares if the Duchess of Cambridge can’t fry an egg? We think this new little tidbit of insider info just adds to her charm.

Honeymoon Beauty Essentials to Keep Your Bridal Glow

pixi-honeymoon-beauty.jpg

Photo: Fara Marcus

Packing for your honeymoon is all about ease. You’ve had a stressful few months of wedding planning, so avoiding packing drama is essential! And, packing your toiletries is a recipe for post-wedding stress. Months of careful skin care planning, facials, and drinking lots and lots of water have made you a glowing bride with the pictures to prove it. Don’t let your hard work go to waste and focus on packing light essentials to let your natural beauty shine through.

Here, our tips for getting that newlywed honeymoon glow, without all the junk.

Have Glow Will Travel

The wedding has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to trade in your bridal glow for a dull complexion. Keeping up with your skincare regime on the honeymoon is the key to maintaining that glow. Choose a version of your go-to products that is easy to use and more importantly easy to pack. Obsessed with Pixi’s cult-followed Glow Tonic? Try the brand’s new Glow Tonic To-Go ($18) pre-soaked pads to keep your skin bright and hydrated when you’re sipping cocktails pool-side.

Make Sure You Multi-task

Want to avoid suitcase full of exploding lipsticks, blushes, and eye? Who doesn’t. Here’s the secret to packing makeup for your honeymoon — a product that does it all! A multibalm adds color to the cheeks, lips and eyes — but Pixi’s (Pixi MultiBalm, $12) version also hydrates with aloe vera, shea butter, and rose hip oil. Keeping your makeup routine minimal is also key to giving your skin a break after the weeks of beauty trials, and heavy photo-ready wedding day makeup.

Treat and Protect Yourself

Nothing screams for skin hydration more than a day of sitting in the sun. First, make sure you’re protecting your skin with a sunscreen with SPF 30 (at least), and at the end of the day, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Pixi’s H2O Skindrink ($22) will get rid of that post sun “tight” feeling, and when mixed with an oil-based serum (like Pixi’s Rose Oil Blend, $24) it makes all the difference in rescuing your skin from sun damage. Sweet almond, rosehip, jojoba, pomegranate seed, and rose geranium oils are key to locking in moisture, even after you’ve had a little too much sun exposure.

Prince Harry Just Received a Marriage Proposal From the Most Unexpected Person

Even though Prince Harry has made it very clear that he’s not trying to settle down yet (really though, when will he stop breaking hearts all over the world?), not everyone is listening — and some are even trying to change his mind. Case in point: While attending an event in England to promote sports and well-being in children, a young fan asked him the question that many ladies around the world have been dying to ask the redheaded royal — “Will you marry me?”

prince-harry-unsure.gif

This six-year-old named Lottie used her time to speak with the prince during a recent charity event and decided to lay it all out there, saying the things that most women in the world are thinking. “I want to be a princess,” she explained (yasss queen, tell it how it is!). Fortunately for the rest of us, he did turn her down, but it was not without an explanation — something every girl wants to hear when rejected, obviously. “You don’t want that — there’s too big an age gap. You’ve been reading a lot of books,” he responded, according to E! News. We’re guessing Lottie felt pretty bummed with his backhanded compliment and rejection, but hey, we can’t fault her for trying. What girl doesn’t grow up wanting to marry a real-life prince — just ask any ’90s girl about her Prince William obsession.

Among the other lucky little ladies he chatted with was a girl named Mattie — who he bonded with over their shared vibrant bright red hair. “You’re nice, very pretty. Are you having fun?” he told her. Too cute. The prince attended this charity event to interact with the children, which was hosted by RFU and StreetGames, which helps British children from low-income households get better acquainted with sports activities. The chief executive, Jane Ashworth, had nothing but nice things to say about the royal heartthrob, noting his good deeds. “It’s fantastic that Prince Harry has such a commitment to helping young people through sport. I think it’s really clear from looking at the kids that they feel validated, that what they’re doing is important. Harry coming here reinforces that commitment.” Handsome AND good with kids? Sounds like marriage material to us.

So will Britain’s most eligible bachelor be off the market any time soon? With that charming smile and hint of bad-boy mystery (with a side of prince), only time will tell, as he’s definitely been toying with our emotions and wavering back and forth about the marriage situation. Most recently, the fourth-in-line to the throne was linked to actress/model Cressida Bonus, but the pair broke up in 2014. In 2015, the royal surprised many by saying he was all about dat (family) life and getting married, sharing with Sky News, “I would love to have kids right now. There come times when you think now is the time to settle down, or now is not, whatever way it is, but I don’t think you can force these things it will happen when it’s going to happen.” Well that sounded promising, until he revealed to the U.K.’s Sunday Times just last month that he has “massive paranoia that sits inside” of him when it comes to marriage. “If or when I do find a girlfriend, I will do my utmost…to ensure that me and her can get to the point where we’re actually comfortable with each other before the massive invasion that is inevitably going to happen into her privacy,” he said. “The other concern is that even if I talk to a girl, that person is then suddenly my wife, and people go knocking on her door.”

Fair enough, Prince Harry. At least you’re looking out for your future wife’s best interest. But just know that Lottie and the rest of the world is hoping you change your mind soon!

5 Little Wedding Details That Can Lead to Blowout Fights

fighting couple

Photo: Getty Images

There’s a saying that the devil is in the details. And when it comes to wedding planning fights, that saying couldn’t be more true. “While you may argue about the big things, like the budget or venue, you’re likely going to bicker most often about the little things,” warns Amy Nichols, owner of Amy Nichols Special Events and co-founder of The Poppy Group. “Recognizing early that even the small things require cooperation and consideration will help the wedding planning process flow much more easily.”

With that in mind, here are five little things that can lead to big wedding fights, and how to solve — or better yet, avoid — each one.

1. Your partner’s attire.
We know what the bride wears on the big day is a big deal. But you may find yourself bickering if your partner wants to pair a tuxedo with his Chuck Taylor’s. “Brides and grooms often argue over the look and style that is expected of them on the wedding day,” says Nichols. “Staying as true to the actual likeness of the couple in everyday life is always the best bet. But arguing happens when couples can’t agree on what that is exactly.”

2. Your invitation wording.
You may have never imagined you’d have war or words with your significant other over your invitation wording. But, as Two Little Birds Planning owner Jaclyn Fisher explains, the order in which you list your parents on this piece of paper can be a touchy subject, especially if one set is footing the bill for your big day. Don’t let wording lead to a disagreement between you by choosing a neutral invitation phase, such as, “along with their parents,” Fisher suggests.

3. The cost of a small item.
When you’ve already booked and paid for the big things, it can be easy to overlook that little costs can quickly add up. “Favors cost how much? It’s not uncommon for one partner to begin calculating the small things and begin getting frustrated by the total,” says Nichols. “This finds you arguing about whether the mercury glass candle holder is worth the extra $2.” Sidestep this argument by building even the smallest items into your initial budget, and being open about your spending as you plan.

4. The bachelor or bachelorette party.
Whether driven by finances for a costly out-of-town celebration or concern your partner will cross the line, couple’s often fight over these particular parties, says Fisher. “Avoid arguments by discussing your feelings, possible scenarios, and how you would both handle them if they arise,” she suggests, adding it’s best to host the parties far before the wedding, which will give everyone time to recover and recoup.

5. Your wedding flowers.
It’s tough to imagine bickering over something so beautiful. But when you ask your beau to choose between English garden or American beauty roses and get a non-committal answer, an argument can soon blossom. “It’s not the actual flowers causing the fight,” says Fisher. “It’s the groom’s lack of involvement or opinion.” So, be sure to clearly communicate to your partner how much you value and need his opinion. Or, “if it’s already an issue, don’t let it escalate,” encourages Fisher. “Let him know that you want him involved so the wedding reflects both of you.”

5 Wedding Themes That Are Trending Right Now

Rustic weddings are so last year! Now, it’s all about modern geometrics and all things eclectic. For a more detailed look at what’s hot (and what’s not so much anymore) in the wedding world, take a peek at these five wedding themes that are super on trend right now.

1. All Things Eclectic
In a continued effort to represent the bride and groom uniquely, more and more clients are asking for “eclectic but chic” designs, reveals planner Lauren Chitwood, owner and founder of Lauren Chitwood Events. “Think mismatched accessories and interesting pattern play. The goal is to have an effortless look that is flawlessly done.” Because who doesn’t love a perfectly imperfect wedding?

2. Dreamy Greenery
Greenery is back and in a big way! According to Chitwood, the days of compact floral mounds are out, as beautiful arrangements with textural greenery are all the rage now. This theme works beautifully both indoors (for example, at a hip industrial space) and out (on an urban rooftop or in the middle of the forest), with string lights or other soft lighting like candles helping set the stage for organic romance.

3. Modern Geometrics
The rustic trend is finally beginning to take a new shape, yay! Brides who still want an organic feel but without being too “country” are digging geometric accents, like flower-filled terrariums, tells Dezhda “Dee” Gaubert, owner of No Worries Event Planning. “Mixing in lush greenery and blooms with metallic and glass in bold geometrics adds a welcome modern edge to the rustic look that had started to overstay its welcome.”

4. Holiday Celebrations
‘Tis the season to throw a holiday-themed wedding! As our lives continue to get more hectic and destination weddings become commonplace, Chitwood says couples are eager to combine their celebrations with popular calendar holidays that are perfect for a party (or, you know, a mini vacation for their guests too). “Halloween, New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July have become hot themes for festive nuptials, as these special dates naturally lend themselves to themed celebrations,” she notes.

5. Dark Colors
Bye-bye blush, hello color! As we all know, light pinks and blush have been a very dominant, go-to color theme over the past several years. “Now, many brides and grooms are starting to deepen their palette with richer hues to provide an edge to their look without losing a sense of elegance,” explains Gaubert. “Dark, rich colors bring depth and gravity to d&#233cor and work particularly well for fall and winter weddings.” Black wedding cakes are even a thing now!
