5 Common Wedding Fights You Might Have With Your Mom

common wedding arguments with mother

While you’re steeped in engagement bliss, you might just be blissfully unaware that your mother is teeming with concerns, worries, and even demands. And that, our expert warns, could be a recipe for conflict. So here are five wedding fights you might have with your mom, and how to solve (or even avoid!) every single one.

1. Your mother’s involvement in wedding planning.
Like you, your mother may have been dreaming of your wedding day since you were a little girl — or even before you were born. So if your mother feels left out of the planning process, it could cause problems between you two. “I’ve heard mothers say they often feel relegated to second class, and all-but-replaced by the groom,” says John Duffy, Ph.D., parenting expert and author of The Available Parent. In this situation, “I would strongly suggest protecting some element of the planning — whether it be the ceremony, flowers, menu, or dress — as mother and daughter decision time. This way, your mom will always feel like a critical part of the process.”

2. Your ceremony.
Says Duffy, “Denomination tends to come up frequently, due to disagreements about religion or services.” Perhaps you’re a Christian marrying a Jewish man, and you’ve agreed — to your mother’s dismay — to marry under a chuppah rather than at an altar. Duffy says if you find yourself embroiled in an argument over what you’ll read or recognize at your ceremony, “it is imperative that you acknowledge your mother’s feelings and her faith, while being clear in your own intentions.”

3. Your partner.
Possibly the most difficult disagreement of them all is when a mother doesn’t approve of her daughter’s partner. “This is among the trickiest issues I ever work with clinically,” Duffy admits. Because this is such a painful disagreement, Duffy recommends seeking professional help in order to work through it. If you can talk it through, you could “[sidestep] what might be a lifetime of avoidance and strife,” he says.

4. Your mother-in-law.
With all the monster-in-law stories we’ve heard, it might be hard to imagine a mother would feel threatened by her daughter’s new mother-in-law. But Duffy’s seen it happen. “Mothers sometimes feel as if their daughter’s new mother-in-law to be is going to take her place in the life of the daughter,” explains Duffy. Tell your mother that could never be the case, Duffy says. “Then it’s critical that you protect time between you and your mother,” he says, so that your mother feels she is still a big and important part of your life.

5. Your relationship after the wedding.
Says Duffy, “Many mothers feel as if their importance will diminish after the wedding and fanfare, and this can become a major driver of conflict.” So just as above, it’s important to show your mother you want to spend time with her. “I encourage brides-to-be and their moms to protect time for each other on their calendars before the big event to ensure this will not be the case,” says Duffy. “The occasional ritual — weekly lunches, for instance — sustains your connection, provides for a happier relationship over the long run, and short circuits any conflict. There are no losers in this scenario.”

Simply hold two levers and the desk moves up and down to a custom height. If you hear through the grape vine that he’s doing more sitting than standing, we suggest reminding him that you burn one more calorie a minute when you’re on your feet — and he wants to look good on the big day, right? Help yours improve his game with Golf Game Live, the latest wearable technology favored by PGA pros like Lee Westwood and Jim Furyk. The set — composed of a small device worn on the belt and small tags that attach to the grip of each club — pairs with a mobile device or smart watch to track a player’s strokes. Meaning your dad can instantly review a shot, measure its distance, and see how his performance stacks up against his own stats and the average among other players with the same handicap (the app is also filled with tips to help improve overall play). And if you’re also a golfer, we recommend buying your own unit, so you can challenge dad to more than just putting competitions out on the course. For the Music-Loving Dad
Tired of hearing your dad complain that his surround sound is breaking down? Bring him into the 21st century with Sengled, a company that embeds wireless speakers into light bulbs. Confused? Here’s how it works: Sengled created energy efficient LED bulbs that also contain speakers powered by JBL Bluetooth technology. Simply plug in your bulb to a ceiling socket or lamp, download the app, pair the Master bulb with your smart phone via Bluetooth, and adjust both the brightness of the light and the level of sound directly from your device. Pick him up a Solo unit — essentially a one-and-done bulb plus speaker he can use in, say, his home office — or go big with a Pulse by Sengled pair, which connect to up to seven satellite bulbs. The result: a tricked out surround system in the palm of his hand — just no Frank Sinatra on repeat, please. (“Pulse Solo” Bluetooth lightbulb, $59.99, Sengled; “Pulse Pair” Bluetooth lightbulb, $149.99, Sengled)

Oculus Rift

For the Video-Gamer Dad
If your dad is like Kevin Spacey in House of Cards and prefers to unwind after a long day of work with a few rounds of Halo, look no further than Oculus VR. The virtual reality company — bought by Facebook for $2 billion in 2014 — is making waves with its wearable 3D technology, built into a sleek headset to let you play video games, watch movies, step inside photographs, and more. The latest version of their hallmark design, Oculus Rift — which looks like a pair of fancy ski goggles and pairs with a PC computer — touts new sensors to monitor your head motions and adjust the 3D image (the same way what your eyes adjust IRL when you tilt your head left and right). If dad can’t wait until the August ship date for his shiny new toy, opt for the Gear VR, powered by Samsung, which is compatible with any Samsung Galaxy phone for gaming on the go. (“Rift” headset, $599, Oculus; “Gear VR” headset, $99, Oculus)

Snoop Dogg Shares Epic Throwback Photo in Honor of His 19th Wedding Anniversary

We’ll be the first to admit that when it comes to Snoop Dogg, his 19-year marriage isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. His music, his movies, his style — sure. But his wife of almost 20 years? Nope! Well, at least not until Snoop Dogg (real name Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr.) shared this totally EPIC throwback photo in honor of his 19th wedding anniversary to Shante Broadus on Tuesday.

“19. Years today @bosslady_ent Happy anniversary been a1 from day 1. thanks for my kids,” Snoop — who has four children with his wife — captioned the throwback Instagram pic, which appears to be a high school prom portrait of the pair, along with a slew of emojis.

The rapper also shared a few other Instagrams in honor of their marriage milestone, including a cute couple shot of Snoop and his wife accompanied by just emojis (hearts, flowers and a glass of wine) as well as a picture of a white bed with rose petals in the shape of a heart lying on the bedspread and a few flowers leaning against the pillows (wink, wink!). We think it’s safe to say based on these photos (below) these two had a very nice anniversary!

According to E! News, Broadus began dating Snoop when they were teenagers, before he took on his now infamous moniker and acquired an over-$100 million net worth. The rapper ultimately put a ring on his high school sweetheart’s finger, marrying Broadus in 1997.

The pair did run into some tough times, leading the rapper to file for divorce in 2004, citing “irreconcilable differences,” but the split didn’t last long. “I was trying to get a divorce, but I went back home and I fell back in love with my wife and kids. A lot of times you get cloudy,” Snoop told MTV at the time. “This music industry is a mother, man, and it’ll take your vision and blur it. But God is good, so I understand that I need my wife and my kids in my life — so I threw the papers away. I don’t want to get a divorce. So if you hear about a divorce, it’ll be my wife divorcing me. It won’t be me divorcing her…And I made a mistake, so I’m trying to get back right.”

And when it came to getting back his longtime love? Snoop did what any man in love would do. “A whole lot of begging and pleading,” Snoop told Larry King, regarding how he made it work with his wife. “It was up to me to try to put it back together, because I’m the one who said I didn’t want to be a part of it no more…It’s hard now to this day. It’s still hard because there’s a lot of, you know — there’s a lot of roller coaster to a relationship. You know, we’ve been together for 17 or 18 years. We’ve been married for 10 years, but, at the same time, it’s like, you know, some people in life are chosen for you. And I feel like we’re chosen for each other.”

The couple renewed their wedding vows in front of 200 friends and family on Jan. 12, 2008, on Charlie Wilson’s 20-acre ranch, which was a surprise ceremony for Snoop’s wife.

Don't Be THAT Guy — Avoid These 7 Wedding Toast Mistakes

Things to Avoid Bad Wedding Speeches

Photo: New Line/Courtesy Neal Peters Collection

If you’ve been tapped with the task of speaking at an upcoming wedding — whether you’re giving a maid of honor speech, a father of the bride toast, a best man speech, or something in between — you may find yourself with a sudden case of writer’s block, unsure of where to start and what to include in your wedding toast. In order to give a memorable and LOL-worthy speech, it’s best to remember to keep it short and simple — and to try and avoid these 7 common wedding toast mistakes.

1. Making it Multiple Pages Long
Keep your wedding toast short and sweet. If you see that your speech is more than one page, shave off as much as you can to get rid of those additional pages. The shorter you make it, the more engaging it will be.

2. Doing it Improv
You might have the idea to just wing your speech and speak from the heart, but the problem with this route is that when nerves, and a few glass of bubbly come into play, you may end of forgetting what you want to say… and then end up standing in front of a room filled with people speechless. Even if you don’t write the whole thing down, make sure you at least write out some bullet points so you can stay on script.

3. Not Making Eye Contact
It’s OK if you don’t memorize your speech, but if you’re reading off the paper be sure to take breaks to make eye contact with the bride, groom and guests.

4. Going With a Blast from the Past
Dig deep to find funny stories to color your toast with, but don’t fill your speech with a bunch of inside jokes that only you and the bride or groom will find funny.

5. Making the Bride Blush (or Mad)
When you’re choosing the best blast from the past memories to add to the toast, leave off any that may make the bride feel embarrassed or uncomfortable.

6. Forgetting Your Audience
Remember that you’re not just giving this toast to the bride or groom; you have a room filled with guests to entertain as well. So keep them hooked with anecdotes, open body language, and laugh lines that they can appreciate.

7. Talking too Fast
The key to giving a memorable speech is giving one that people can understand. So remember to speak slowly and practice your tone and pace before the big day.
