How to Stop Second Guessing Your Wedding Planning Decisions, For Good

don't second guess wedding planning decisions

Dozens of choices pop up every day while wedding planning. Who’s sitting where? Should we spring for a photo booth? Is my wedding dress really the one? Did we pick the right cake? Is our ceremony date the right choice for my astrological sign? With all these moving parts, it’s easy to feel indecisive. But with a miles-long checklist pending, and your big day quickly approaching, no bride has time to rehash choices that are already made. Here’s how to banish agonizing over options after the fact.

Consider the opinions that matter
How many times have you been completely feeling your new outfit before your work BFF tells you your drop crotch pants make you look more MC Hammer than Instagram influencer? Outside opinions can wreak the same havoc on the wedding planning choices you make. So what happens when you love your wedding venue, but a pushy acquaintance calls the ceremony site tacky? Take it with a grain of salt, suggests Dr. Neill S. Cohen, a New York-based psychologist. “Everybody’s going to give their opinion,” Cohen says. “It’s human nature. Everybody wants to be helpful and well-meaning.”

The best way to keep those unsolicited words of wisdom from making you rethink your choices is to “keep as few people as possible mixed in” to your decision-making process, he says. A few people whose take you have to consider? Your parents and your fianc&eacute’s parents, especially if they’re contributing to the budget. “If [the parents’ view is] not a primary opinion, it’s at least an opinion that matters a whole lot,” he says. “Parents as they get older, have very few milestones in their lives. For them, it’s a way of marking time…The wedding really becomes a milestone and a statement, as to where they’ve come to and who they are as parents.” With that in mind, sit down with your spouse-to-be and decide how much and in what way the ‘rents will have input on your big day.

Don’t get hung up on details
Cohen says it’s crucial to sit down with your significant other and come up with a short (key thing here: brief!) list of non-negotiables — the things that are the most important to you as a couple for your wedding. Everything else: just let it go! “Do not get mired in the details,” he says. “People lose the forest for the trees… Pick the situations where it’s worth having discussions about, like where you might get married and how large the wedding might be.” Besides that, try not to sweat it.

Toss the pros and cons list
Despite popular wisdom, Cohen says pros and cons lists aren’t necessarily the best way to weigh options when so many emotions are involved. “It assumes that people have a balance sheet — feelings don’t work that way,” Cohen says. He recommends talking it out with your spouse-to-be and arriving at a decision together if you’re stuck on a larger life conundrum, like where you’ll live after the wedding. “A good conversation with one’s partner is going to be worthwhile for life’s long-reaching decisions,” he says.

Trust your gut and quit hesitating
Julie Holmes, a New York-based life coach, says nervousness over a choice can often be attributed to fear of the making the wrong decision, fear of the unknown or fear of being judged. That said, sometimes it’s necessary to take the plunge. “We will never truly know what is the right or wrong decision until we make it,” Holmes says. “By hesitating, we are only procrastinating what could be an amazing future.” Or wedding day!

When it comes down to it, remember to focus on in on what’s important. “It’s normal to question decisions that we feel are going to impact the rest of our lives, and [a bride] should use her gut instinct to decide what’s right for her,” Holmes says. “However, a bride needs to remember what her wedding day is about, and what’s truly important. It’s not about the decorations, the cake, the dress, or anything else, it’s about the moment she’s going to share with her future significant other and all of her closest friends and family.”

Did Miley Cyrus Just Reveal That She's NOT Engaged to Liam Hemsworth?

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth Might Not Be Engaged

Photo: Getty Images

Grrr… Why must you play with our emotions like this, Milliam??!! Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have been keeping us on the edge of our seat with Milliam Wedding Watch 2016. Ever since that megawatt engagement ring Hemsworth gifted Cyrus way back in 2012 reappeared on her finger early this year, we’ve been waiting to sneak a peek at the pop star in a wedding dress and for these two to tie the knot. (And obviously we’ve been totally patient about it…) But as it turns out, all of that waiting might have been in vain. In fact, Cyrus and Hemsworth might not be engaged after all, according to a new interview the “Wrecking Ball” singer gave, in which she might have just let her true relationship status slip.

In the months since that Neil Lane engagement ring made its comeback tour on Cyrus’ finger, Cyrus has reportedly moved into Hemsworth’s mansion, the couple has been rumored to be planning a seaside wedding in Australia, and even Hemsworth himself pretty much insinuated that the reconciliation rumors were true in a GQ interview. But we might have been getting ahead of ourselves with the wedding planning, according to the most recent relationship reveal from The Voice‘s newest coach.

Cyrus has remained pretty tight-lipped regarding her love life. For instance, during her appearance on Today earlier this month, she managed to expertly evade host Savannah Guthrie’s questions on the special sparkler on her finger. But when the 23-year-old songstress sat down with Elle magazine for an interview in their October issue, she may have shed some light on the situation.

Although she was still rocking her ring, Cyrus continuously referred to Hemsworth as her “boyfriend” throughout the interview — not her fiancé. Umm, what?! Did Cyrus just let her relationship status slip? Are these two really not engaged after all? Have we been living a lie?!

Brides-to-be may know that there is big, big, BIG difference between ‘boyfriend’ and ‘fiancé,’ but let’s not forget that Miley is, well, Miley. The girl has never let labels cramp her style, so she might still very well be planning a wedding to her “boyfriend.” Or perhaps the sneaky songstress is just trying to throw us off their tracks. Either way, we’re not losing hope just yet…

Science Can Predict When You're Most Likely to Get Divorced

science can predict when you're likely to get divorced

Photo: Getty Images

While we’re still waiting for science to tell us how to find the love of our life — and whether or not to wait until those shoes you’ve been coveting all season long go on sale — we now know when we’d divorce them. Turns out, like any good sale, divorce usually peaks twice a year.

A new study from the University of Washington has found that divorce has a pattern and it happens to be seasonal, as Refinery 29 reports. From looking at data in Washington state between 2001 and 2015, researchers found that after winter and summer holidays — in March and August, respectively — are the most popular times of the year to get divorced. That pattern also emerged in other states such as Ohio, Minnesota, Florida and Arizona, which “have similar divorce laws as Washington, but differ in demographics and economic conditions.”

It’s not hard to guess why most couples choose to divorce in March and August — the first peak time comes after families have had a chance to recover from the financial burden and familial obligations of holidays. Plus, according to a press release detailing the study, many couples look to the holidays as a chance to press reset. (See: New Year’s resolutions.) “Troubled couples may see the holidays as a time to mend relationships and start anew. We’ll have a happy Christmas together as a family or take the kids for a nice camping trip, the thinking goes, and things will be better.”

On the other hand, so many couples could be divorcing in March not because they waited for the holidays to pass but because of the holidays themselves. December holidays can be especially stressful on couples as they’re forced to blend into each other’s families.

As for why August is another popular month to file for divorce, U of W sociology professor Julie Brines believes that the start of the school year adds an extra incentive to couples with children who want to solidify their custody arrangement and parenting schedule.

If only it was as easy to figure out the best times of the year to fall in love.

Admit it, you loved Beverly Hills 90210. We understand, our formative years were filled with Brenda, Brandon, Dylan, Kelly, Steve, Donna, David and Andrea. Some of our first wedding memories were even straight from our favorite West Beverly High drama. Remember when Jackie and Mel had to get married at the Walsh house? What about Dylan’s unforgettable cliffside ceremony with Toni? And we can’t forget that time Kelly and Brandon almost became Mr. and Mrs. Walsh. We’re looking back at our favorite TV wedding moments from Beverly Hills 90210.

The gang took a break from hanging out at the Beverly Hills Beach Club to stir up some serious drama at Jackie and Mel’s wedding at Casa Walsh — the first “I dos” to take place in the series. Kelly, Brenda, and Donna were a vision in bubble gum pink halter bridesmaid dresses, and we even got a Brenda and Dylan wedding fantasy that fueled our teenage wedding dreams (above)! Oh yeah, Kelly and David officially became brother and sister.

She’s perfect in a sleek halter gown, with her naturally curly hair beautifully accessorized by a statement veil. Sadly the brides is gunned down by her own father when he mistakes her for Dylan. They didn’t even get a honeymoon. Dylan McKay continued to brood until the end of time.

Everything You Need to Know About Planning a Summer Wedding in a City

Are you planning to be a June, July or August bride? If so, you’re in good company. But even though summer is the most popular season to get married, it can come with a unique set of challenges for brides who are planning a wedding in a major city, such as New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston… the list goes on. So here are six expert-approved tips for all you summer brides planning a wedding inside a big, bustling city.

There will be a lot of tourists.
Summer is when most people go on vacation, so when you’re thinking about places for your engagement and wedding party photos, keep in mind that if you’re planning to take pictures by any popular city landmark, there’s a good chance that there will be significantly more foot traffic than there would be during the off-season.

Wear a light dress.
Have you always dreamed of wearing an ornate gown with lots of details? If so, you should probably plan your wedding during a different time of year. If you’re getting married in the city in the heart of the summer (and especially if you’re having an outdoor ceremony), it’s in your best interest to wear a dress that’s made of lighter material, so you can breathe and not get overheated during the ceremony and the reception. However, if your heart is set on a heavy gown, go for it — but at least choose bridesmaids dresses made of a more lightweight fabric for your BFFs!

Book your venue as far in advance as possible.
If you’ve got a dream venue and you want to get married in the summer, chances are there are probably many other city brides who have the same idea as you. If you already know where you want to host your wedding, don’t procrastinate; get that contract locked down. However, in the event that you can’t commit right away and must hold off on making a final decision, make sure to have at least a few back up venues in mind.

Avoid coinciding with big events.
There are a lot of things going on in bustling cities — whether it be New York, Chicago, or any other location — in the summer, which means that there will be a lot more people around and road closings, not to mention many more people in area hotels, which can make it tricky for your out of town guests to find a room, even if you’ve blocked out rooms in advance. Plan your big day around these big events and you should be golden!

And finally, stay hydrated!
This might seem like an obvious tip for the summer, but it’s an easy one to forget when you’re distracted by all the other details and elements of your wedding weekend. Summers in a city are no joke, and it can get hot with all the buildings and concrete. Even though you’ll be busy with everything that’s going on, definitely make sure that you drink as much water as possible so you don’t get light headed or dizzy! This is your big day and the last thing you want is to feel sick.

Everything You Need to Know About Choosing Your Wedding Shoes

Tips For Choosing The Right Shoes For Your Wedding

Photo: Perry Vaile

When it comes to your wedding shoes, comfort is key! After all, anybody who has ever really thought about Cinderella‘s glass slippers knows she didn’t accidentally lose one on her way to the carriage — she’d taken those painful heels-from-hell off hours before. Sadly, often the prettiest shoes are not meant for comfortably dancing all night. What’s a bride to do?

Obviously, you want to wear something pretty on your feet, but do they have to be high heels? And what if you want to wear them for your wedding ceremony, but not the entire reception? Or vice versa. We’ve got the answers.

Do not attempt to wear heels of any kind on the sand for a beach ceremony. They will sink in, and you will lurch your way down the aisle. You’ll be wiggling through the wedding ceremony as you unstick yourself, or you won’t be concentrating on your wedding vows because you’re concentrating on keeping your weight completely on your toes. It’s a losing battle either way.

Heels on a lawn can be almost as tricky, especially if it has rained recently. Not only will you be uncomfortable, you’ll destroy those beautiful shoes. Wedges are a better choice, but consider ones not made of fabric so that they can be effectively cleaned after the ceremony. If the reception is indoors, you can switch to another shoe of the same height after the ceremony and pictures.

The trick is to make sure that you have the bridal shop hem your wedding gown to the appropriate length for whatever shoe you decide to wear for your wedding ceremony. Nothing looks worse than a too-long dress on a bride as she walk down the aisle, kicking it out in front of her.

However, nobody will notice if you opt to go barefoot on a beach, for example, and then slip into heels for your first dance at the wedding reception. If anything, they’ll actually see the shoes when they probably wouldn’t have if the dress was longer.

The trick is that it’s much harder to go backwards — as in, wearing super-high platform heels for the ceremony, and then dropping down to ballet flats during the reception. That’s when the dress really gets in the way. It will get stepped on by guests on the dance floor.

If you know you’re going to want to wear lower shoes for the reception, do your best not to select the highest possible heels for the ceremony. And consider a lower shoe that isn’t actually flat for the reception. Have the gown hemmed shorter than the bridal shop recommends. They never like to shorten a gown for a shoe change, but that decision is ultimately up to you.

This Fashion Blogger's All-White Wedding in New York City Will Make Your Jaw Drop

Planning a wedding is a great opportunity for a couple to express their sense of style. But what happens when the bride isn’t just stylish, but is also New York City fashion blogger Marni Reisender, the creative mind behind Style on the Rise? Well, let’s just say you’re in for a treat.

Marni first met her now husband, Brett Harvey, at Brett’s birthday party in 2010. “I had never met Brett, but was invited by a mutual friend of ours. I walked over to say happy birthday and buy him a birthday drink but, being the gentleman he is, Brett denied and bought me a drink instead. The rest is history!” Marni says. The duo’s love blossomed in the city, and in August of 2014, Brett brought Marni to the Hamptons for one of their annual summer weekends. After putting their name down for dinner at one of Sag Harbor’s hotspots, they headed down to the dock to watch the sunset. “Brett was talking about anything he could think of,” says Marni. Eventually, he worked up the courage to propose, and got down on one knee. “Everyone at the restaurant was cheering and clapping, it was like a scene out of a movie!” But that wasn’t their final stop. Instead, they headed over to a nearby restaurant where their families were waiting to celebrate.

With a love story so entrenched in the Big Apple, the couple knew they couldn’t wed anywhere else. They chose Cipriani Wall Street for its edgy, cool, and romantic vibe — and the stunning columns and vaulted ceiling — and skipped color in favor of a super-chic all-white palette. “It was so classic, and I knew we’d look back in 10 years and still love what we chose,” says the bride. What’s more New York than that? The couple also loved that there was ample space for their 300-person guest list! They covered the space with flowers and candlelight, and capped off the elegant evening with an after-party worthy of the downtown location. See the details of their August 22, 2015, wedding for yourself, photographed by Brett Matthews Photography!

A good fashion blogger knows the outfit is really all in the accessories, and Marni was no exception. She picked t-strap Rene Caovilla pumps — with the brand’s signature glitter soles — and a personalized Edie Parker clutch featuring her new last name.

Though she spent almost three months shopping for gowns all over the city, Marni returned to one of the first looks she ever tried: An ivory mermaid wedding dress with a sheer back and beaded lace by Inbal Dror. “I knew I wanted a gown with wow-factor and show-stopping details, and this was it,” she says. “I tried it on during a trunk show, and almost ended up flying to Florida to find the sample and try it on one more time!” Thankfully, a local salon was able to get the dress for her and she placed her order with just six months to spare.

In keeping with the classic New York City theme, Brett wore a custom tuxedo with a white bow tie. Says Marni of their dream team, which included Pat Glenn Productions and the Bobby Attiko Band, “Planning a wedding is no easy task, but with lots of help from amazing professionals and even more love from family and friends, the night was a dream come true.”

Their wedding party (a grand total of 24 friends!) looked totally chic, with the men in tuxedos and the women in rose gold sequin Badgley Mischka gowns. Marni’s maid of honor wore a silver dress by Jovani. “I didn’t want them in typical bridesmaid dresses,” says the style-minded bride.

Inside Cipriani Wall Street, a floral chuppah was surrounded by curved rows of chivari chairs. The four posts of the chuppah were covered in white and ivory hydrangeas, roses, and orchids, and clusters of pillar candles lit the aisle.

Marni made her grand entrance alone, then met her parents halfway down the aisle. Instead of writing their own vows, she and Brett wed in a traditional Jewish ceremony. “We wrote letters to one another and shared them before the ceremony so we could have that moment in private,” she says.

In the main room, tables were covered with white linens and decked out with lush floral arrangements. Four different centerpieces topped the tables, each combining hydrangeas, orchids, lisianthus, and lots of candlelight. The bride and groom sat at a sweetheart table flanked by urns overflowing with orchids. “We didn’t sit much since we were on the dance floor most of the night, but that white sofa was one of my favorite accents,” Marni says.

After sipping “Dirty Harveys” (a twist on the dirty martini) and snacking on baked tagliolini, mini hot dogs, and shrimp skewers, guests sat down to a dinner of tuna tartar with avocado, prime roast filet of beef, miso Chilean sea bass, and a chocolate soufflé with Chantilly cream. If that weren’t enough, there were also plates of sweets including cannolis, tiramisu, brownies, and chocolate covered strawberries on each table, and cake pops and mini profiteroles served on the dance floor!

When Brett and Marni were introduced for their first dance, the guests had a surprise for the newlyweds: confetti poppers! “The air was filled with bright confetti, it was so magical,” says Marni.

The pair served a six-tier vanilla wedding cake, filled with chocolate ganache and decorated with swirls, dots, and a cascade of sugar orchids.

When the band was done, a DJ came out to get the after party started — no change of venue required. Marni changed into a lace mini dress, and guests donned sunglasses that read “Harvey Ever After.” “I remember looking out into the crowd when we were on stage and thinking how lucky we were to be surrounded by everyone we love. It was an indescribable feeling I wish I could relive over and over again,” says the bride.

With a honeymoon in Mykonos on the horizon, the bride and groom have a little advice for couples planning weddings of their own: “Don’t let the little things bother you. You’re marrying the person of your dreams, and that’s all that really matters. The memories will last forever!”
