The Pros and Cons of Planning a Wedding in Less Than 6 Months

Don’t want to wait to walk down the aisle? We don’t blame you! While a long engagement is the right path for some couples, for others, getting married within six months is the way to go. So if you’re considering saying “I do” sooner rather than later, take these pros and cons into mind to help you make your final decision.

PRO: Excitement runs high
Friends and family are most excited about your engagement right after it happens, points out Rachel Jo Silver, Founder of Love Stories TV. “Announcing a date for the wedding and then diving right into showers, bachelorette parties and wedding festivities is a great way to keep excitement up and momentum going for the big day.”

CON: You might have to settle for less
In larger cities especially, planning a wedding in less than 6 months probably means that you’re not going to have a ton of options when it comes to venues (and vendors), as most venues in big cities book up at least 9-12 months in advance, even more in places like NYC, notes wedding planner Leah Weinberg, owner of Color Pop Events. “Or to get the venue you want, it may mean having to settle for a Friday or Sunday wedding.” Snagging

PRO: Better vendor deals
Although your first choice may not be available, if you’re having your wedding on an off day or there happens to be a cancellation, a lot of venues and vendors that usually get booked a year or so out may offer added values because they have already counted on that day not getting booked, tells Regina Young, owner of Meant2Be Events. “Venues and vendors have sales quotas to fill so it stands to reason that the closer you get to the wedding date, the more negotiable they just might be,” adds Florida-based wedding planner Aviva Samuels of Kiss The Planner.

CON: It’s much tougher to DIY, especially a destination wedding
According to Banta, it’s better to have a longer timeline if you’re planning a wedding without assistance and need the extra time to vet and contract vendors. “It’s also necessary to have ample time in the case that many guests will be traveling long distances and require time to get off of work and make travel plans.”

PRO: You’re forced to be more decisive
With a short engagement, decisions usually need to be made more quickly and since you don’t have the luxury or time to weigh all the options, this typically leads to less indecisiveness, explains Florida Keys wedding planner Lynn D’Ascanio of D’Asigner Events. Kristin Banta, Creative Director of Kristin Banta Events, agrees. “A short timeline forces the couple to get down to the heart of what’s most important. Generally, first instincts are the best and having less time can be beneficial as it omits the tendency to second guess and to spend too much time sifting through images, forcing the couple to plan from their gut and unique point of view.”

CON: There’s a lot more pressure
Tend to get flustered when the pressure is on? Then a short timeframe may take an already stressful set of tasks and send you over your tolerance limits, warns Samuels. “If you know from the get-go that you don’t respond well to pressure, you might consider setting a date well enough into the future to ward off any added stress.”

This Is Why You Should Consider Nevis as a Wedding Destination

Nevis Island Traveling Tips

Photo: Getty Images

Nevis is a tiny, 32-square mile Caribbean island southeast of Puerto Rico — and it’s one of the most romantic undiscovered wedding destinations. Considered one of the most romantic islands in the world, it’s got white sand beaches, aquamarine waters, a tropical rain forest, incredible native flowers, monkeys on the golf greens, and donkeys in the road. It also has about 50 historic landmarks that would make fabulous destination wedding venues, in addition to exquisite beaches.

Nevis Island, in the West Indies, is where Princess Diana vacationed with her little princes, and a bodyguard, many years ago, at the Montpelier Plantation — an historic plantation that was converted into a hotel after the sugar cane industry disappeared from the island in the 1950s. Locals say that Princess Di’s visit is one of the major events that put Nevis on the map as a tourist destination.

At Montpelier Plantation, couples may host their guests for a welcome cocktail inside a perfectly preserved sugar mill, or have their own romantic fine dining experience on their honeymoon, while staying where royalty has been before them — quite literally.

In 2016, our friends at Condé Nast Traveler named Nevis one of “the most romantic islands” in the world. But it isn’t just beaches and beautiful views that make a place famously romantic, so we set out to explore.

A former part of the United Kingdom, Nevis, and its sister-island of St. Kitts (two miles across the turquoise water), are an independent, two-island country. They are extremely visitor-friendly, and they accept US currency as readily as their own Eastern Caribbean dollars. The island has a rich history — in fact, it is the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton — yes, THAT Hamilton. The island community, with a population of approximately 13,000 people, is working to preserve and restore a number of significant landmarks, some of which are very popular for weddings.

The Cottle Church
Despite an earthquake and hurricanes, the foundation of the Cottle Church has stood. Many brides and grooms choose this location because of its beauty, views, and history. It’s not difficult to get a permit for your wedding, and the proceeds go to the preservation of the church. In fact, getting your marriage license in Nevis isn’t difficult either, because the island enthusiastically welcomes destination weddings. The paperwork costs $100.

Touring the island feels like traveling through time. In tiny Bath Village, the Bath Hotel was once a playground for the rich and famous. The Bath Stream that runs by it is reputed to have healing, medicinal properties. Interestingly, this is considered the first spa in the Caribbean, although it’s fallen apart over the years. There’s an effort to restore it to its former glory, but right now it makes for an interesting 10 minute pit stop on your tour of the island. There’s a little gift shop with local honey and coconut oil, and a charming woman named Ella handing out clean washcloths for visitors who’d like a splash in the restorative waters.

Nevis Island Four Seasons Resort

After seeing the historic spa, it seems as if a visit to the luxury Caribbean Spa at the Four Seasons Resort Nevis is more than appropriate. Located on famous Pinney’s Beach, the five-diamond hotel is the biggest resort on the island, and has 196 posh rooms, and another 80 private villas, most of which are available as wedding venues and guest accommodations. Hopping on the Broadway craze stateside, the Four Seasons offers a creative “Hamilton’s Perfect Union” romance package for couples.

A sunset stroll down Pinney’s Beach, with Nevis Peak on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, is enough to confirm all the hype about the island’s romantic setting. It has a certain energy — a feeling that settles in your chest once you’ve spent some time there. The kind of thing that makes you dread leaving the place almost as soon as you’ve arrived. Experiencing it with the one you love — or all of your family and friends for your wedding — definitely puts it on our list of must-see honeymoon and wedding spots.

Chinese Actress Christy Chung Wore 4 Dresses and a Mermaid Tail for Her Wedding Because Why Not

Christy Chung, Chinese-Vietnamese actress and star of the 1994 Hong Kong romantic comedy Mermaid Got Married, just took a cue from her on-screen siren self when it came to her own big day. On Tuesday, November 8th, Chung married her fiancé Golden Zhang Lunshuo, where she obviously impressed her guests with the four (yes, four…) wedding dresses she wore. But Chung really made a splash when she also donned an honest-to-goodness mermaid tail for the wedding festivities. (Splash? Get it?!)

How’s this for a whale of a wedding? (Okay, we promise we’ll stop now…) Yesterday, Chung and Lunshuo wed at Beijing’s Nuo Hotel, where Chung transformed the space into an underwater kingdom even Ariel would be jealous of with a blue-hued castle, starfish, and fish figurines littered around the reception venue. Oh and Captain Jack Sparrow was there too, of course.

Chung slipped into her flippers for her wedding portraits with her new hubby, wearing a blue mermaid tail for the magical underwater snapshots. Lunshuo also transformed into a merman for the photoshoot, sporting a matching blue tail. What a trooper, amiright?

See More: This Is What a $31 Million Wedding Looks Like

For the ceremony, Chung wore a beyond-words-stunning kua — a traditional Chinese wedding dress. According to AsiaOne, the frock took a whopping 2,200 hours of labor to create with its intricate embroidery. Next up, was a voluminous ballgown with a strapless neckline, and a fully beaded gown also made an appearance. But it was Chung’s Dorian Ho Couture wedding dress that was the true siren song. The frock — our favorite of the bunch — featured a sparkling skirt, blue beading, a deep V-neckline and glitter galore. And if that wasn’t enough to send your hearts swimming, this mermaid bride also topped off her cake with a mini-mermaid figurine and had her groom’s tux decorated with tiny silver starfish.

Christy, can we be a “Part of Your World,” pretty please?

Is Kylie Jenner Actually Engaged to Tyga This Time?!

is-kylie-jenner-actually-engaged-main.jpg

Photo: Getty Images

We’ve been riding this confusing Kylie Jenner/Tyga roller coaster for what seems like forever now — and ever since the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star debuted her massive diamond ring from her rapper boyfriend, we’ve all been left wondering when the pair will actually take the leap into marriage. After months of teasing her fans with what they thought was an engagement ring, the reality TV star sent out a Snap that stunned us all. The ring was, in fact, just a promise ring (which wasn’t even as big as HIS diamond bling, surprisingly). The Snapchat read, “If this is my promise ring I wanna know what my engagement ring gonna look lie.” Touché, girl.

But once again, we’re confused by the status of these two lovebirds. Jenner recently posted a slew of Instagrams that instantly had us scratching our heads. In the first photo, the Kylie Lip Gloss creator is seen posing with her boyfriend of three years and wearing her so-called promise ring on her right hand. She captioned it saying, “They don’t know.” Umm…we don’t know what exactly?

Then, it gets even more suspicious. In her second Insta picture, the ring is actually on her left hand, and yes, it’s on THAT finger. What are you trying to say Kylie? Because we’re honestly confused AF at this point.

In her third photo, the youngest Kardashian-Jenner sis poses for a mirror selfie without flaunting the ring on her left hand. Sadly, all of this contradicting information doesn’t get us any closer to knowing if they’re actually engaged. But we mean, even if they were technically engaged, Kim Kardashian wouldn’t even think about giving them her blessing. Which is tragic don’t you think?

We guess we’ll just wait and see how this relationship pans out, but we’ll be the first to tell you we wouldn’t mind another lavish Kardashian wedding to swoon over.

Guests From 19 Different Countries Traveled to San Francisco for This Couple's Modern Wedding

Modern San Francisco Wedding, Bride and Groom Portrait

It was only fitting that winemaker Andrea McBride got engaged surrounded by vines. Even better, Fabian John’s proposal story was pretty much the stuff movies are made of. Under the guise of celebrating their fifth anniversary, Fabian bought out a St. Helena, California, winery for the day so that he and Andrea had the place entirely to themselves. “One moment we were sipping Sauvignon Blanc in the vineyard, and the next thing I knew he was down on one knee proposing,” Andrea says. But the made-for-the-movies magic doesn’t end there. “He commissioned an oil painter to paint us post-engagement as we sat in the middle of the vineyard, drinking wine and nibbling on this amazing spread of meat and cheese.” Sigh.

The couple’s July 11, 2016, wedding was just as magical. With a ceremony held at San Francisco‘s epic Palace of Fine Arts and a reception at a chic city restaurant, the couple blended breathtaking backgrounds with clean, modern design and delicious food. They also added a hint of their various cultures — from New Zealand and Barbados to Iran and even Alabama — into the decorations of the day. “We wanted to keep things simple, but still very unique to us,” the bride explains. Read on to see how Flutter Events helped this twosome bring their vision to life, as captured by Amina Touray.

Andrea looked incredible in her Badgley Mischka wedding dress, and she has a last-minute change of heart to thank for her finding it. Just six weeks before the wedding (and despite having already bought another dress), the bride-to-be went shopping again. “I just felt like the first one wasn’t me,” she says. “As soon as I put this one on, I said, ‘yes,’ out loud.”

The dress stood out with it’s crystal-embellished shoulders and fitted bodice. “It reminded me of a very decorated military uniform, in a way. It felt like a metaphor for how I’ve lived life, earned my stars and stripes through the good and the bad and now I was ready to walk down the isle as an accomplished woman to marry the love of my life,” says Andrea, who works as an entrepreneur and wine maker.

The couple’s rose gold wedding bands were purchased at Cartier. And of course, the couple had plenty of celebratory wine on hand for the big day, including a selection from the bride’s own label, McBride Sisters.

Along with her bridesmaids, who wore a variety of peach-hued dresses from J. Crew, Andrea welcomed a brides-man into her party. The brides-man and Fabian’s groomsmen all donned black tuxedos for the big day, but Andrea’s attendant stood out by wearing a skinny neck tie rather than a bow tie.

The couple incorporated their cultures into the wedding in the women’s bouquets. Ferns, the national symbol of new Zealand, and camellias, the state flower of Alabama, were the primary blooms in each round arrangements.

The couple chose the Palace of Fine Arts for their ceremony site not only because it’s an iconic venue, but because it’s one of their favorite places to visit together. With its ornate arches and stone architecture, Andrea and Fabian knew they’d need little in the way of décor. They added an arch made of lush greenery and twisted branches held in two rustic urns as their altar. There, the couple exchanged vows they wrote themselves, and asked two friends to share readings. “One of our friend’s changed the words to the song, ‘No Diggity,’ and personalized the lyrics to us,” says Andrea. “We laughed so hard.”

Everyone then moved to Sens Restaurant, which is owned by one of the couple’s dear friends, for the reception. “We often happy hour there and have celebrated multiple New Years Eve’s there,” Andrea says, so it was a natural choice for their wedding day. Another plus? The restaurant has the most amazing views.

Since they knew they loved the bones of their venue, all Andrea and Fabian really needed to do was add a little personalization. On a seating chart, as well as their invitations and menu cards, guests found a custom crest that represented both the bride and groom’s different backgrounds. The design featured the fern and camellia that the newlyweds included in their flowers, and also added in a Persian lion and the national bird of Barbados. The menu reflected their cultures, too, with choices like New Zealand grilled angus flat iron, Fattoush salad, and southern friend chicken. Naturally, each meal came with generous pours of McBride Sisters wine.

Andrea and Fabian kept the design of their reception clean and modern, with long white tables decked out with white floral arrangements and gold flatware. Rows of chairs were made more comfortable with the addition of plush white pillows.

“We used green moss to cover the windows and add a nice pop of color, along with some hanging greenery installations over the tables,” says the bride. “And you know we had to have the best stemware for the wine!”

In addition to a five-piece band that played throughout the night, the couple hired entertainers who carried giant bottles of McBride Sisters wine, complete with sparklers.

At the reception, Andrea changed into a Balmain dress that had no fewer than 5,000 beads. “It literally felt like it was 40 pounds,” says Andrea. “I had to have my sister help lift it onto me and zip it up.”

As amazing wearing as that dress was, Andrea says the best part of their big day was having all their friends and family there to celebrate with them. “It was the United Nations of weddings,” she jokes. “We had family and friends from 19 countries in attendance.”

What's the Best Way to Tell Guests About Our After Party?

While a wedding after party isn’t required, it’s a fun way to extend the celebrations and make your wedding day last a little bit longer. Of course, a party isn’t a party without guests! We turned to our experts to figure out the best way to let your guests know there’s more festivities to be had once the lights come up.

Keeping your wedding guests well-informed is all about repetition. You don’t want to drive them crazy with the same information over and over again, but you do want to make sure the important details are available in a few different places. The same goes for your after party!

Start with your wedding invitation. An insert or additional card is the perfect place to include the time and location of your after party, as well as anything else guests may need to know (such as if you’re providing transportation, or if they should bring a bathing suit for a late-night dip in the pool). Don’t have a location yet? You should still mention that the after party is happening and provide a time, then direct guests to your wedding website for additional information as it becomes available.

Speaking of your wedding website, here’s where you can get into a little more detail with the plans (or keep everything a surprise!). Be sure to, again, provide the time and location, as well as anything else your guests need to know.

Once your wedding day comes, a few gentle reminders are a great way to encourage guests to keep the party going with you. If your ceremony program includes a timeline of the day, add your after party to the end so they know the night doesn’t end with your sparkler exit. Then, as the dance party is starting to wind down, ask your DJ or bandleader to also remind your guests of what’s coming next and invite everyone to join the newlyweds for a wild all-nighter. Make sure your wedding party knows the plan, so they can answer questions for guests and encourage them to make a night of it!

This Guy's Epic 'Hamilton'-Inspired Wedding Rap is Definitely Going Down in History

Wedding speeches are usually filled with jabs at the groom, love for the bride, and a whole lot of laughs. But for Matt Rotner, brother of the bride and major fan of Broadway musicals, his speech had all of that and more by taking a very different (more musical) approach — with a Hamilton-inspired wedding rap.

“Now, this would not be a Rotner event, if I didn’t do something,” he began as he took the mic, ready to perform at the couples’ wedding at the Beverly Hills Hotel this past weekend. “I had to create a moment that we could all share a moment that we could all share that was truly unforgettable — because weddings are big and merry, and they call for celebration.” Instead, he went on to sing a speech-turned-rap with words about the wedding couple (to the opening tune of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton) — much to the surprise of the bride and groom.

Signaling to the DJ to start the show, he began his mashup of lyrical genius, channeling Lin-Manuel Miranda’s famous tunes in the process. “How does a Met fan, golfer, Long Island boy, an accountant, dropped right in the meltin’ pot. Yes, New York City, ain’t it pretty, the fancy lights and shows. Go meet this Jew from California — you know where this story goes,” he cleverly spit out to the crowd.

“Yes, Jenna Rotner, the oldest daughter of my father. Moved to The Big Apple with some pressure from her mother said time to be a wife. This year you start your life. Israeli mothers, a sharper edge than any knife,” Rotner continued, sharing tidbits about the couple of honor’s path to marriage. Throughout the entire five-minute show, the crowd was laughing and cheering him on.

Rotter got all of his info from research on the site that the couples first met, JDate, according to The Huffington Post, and starting writing the lyrics and rhymes during his commute. Of course, he kept this secret from his sister and her groom-to-be, which totally elevated the surprise factor on the big day. “I told Jenna I had something very special planned and I have been hyping it up to her and Ross for the last year, but I never gave her an inkling of what it could be,” he explained. “When the first first few notes of the track hit after my intro, I saw her face and she was in shock,” he said. “I’ll never forget her reaction and I’m so happy it was caught on camera.”

And while he went through their entire dating history with his lyrical genius with the crowd cheering, he ended the speech on a very sentimental and serious note, as any brother of the bride should. “We gotta get serious for one second. It’s my very last rhyme. Live, laugh, love — cherish and find the best in every situation — please cheers to the two people I love so much, the Druckers!”

Mic drop. Literally.

Paige and Leo, The Vow
Paige: I vow to help you love life, to always hold you with tenderness and to have the patience that love demands. To speak when words are needed and to share the silence when they are not. To agree to disagree on red velvet cake, and to live within the warmth of your heart and always call it home.

Leo: I vow to fiercely love you in all of your forms, now and forever. I promise to never forget this is a once in a lifetime love. And to always know in the deepest part of my soul that no matter what challenges might carry us apart, we will always find our way back to each other.

Winnie the Pooh, by A.A. Milne
“As soon as I saw you, I knew a grand adventure was about to happen. Any day spent with you is my favorite day. So today is my new favorite day.”

Monica and Chandler, Friends
Monica: Chandler, for so long I wondered if I would ever find my prince, my soul mate. Then three years ago at another wedding, I turned to a friend for comfort. And instead, I found everything that I’d ever been looking for my whole life. And now here we are, with our future before us, and I only want to spend it with you, my prince, my soul mate, my friend. Unless you don’t want to. You go!

Chandler: Monica, I thought this was going to be the most difficult thing I ever had to do. But when I saw you walking down the aisle, I realized how simple it was. I love you. You are the person I was meant to spend the rest of my life with. You want to know if I’m sure? (Leans in and kisses her.)

The Princess Bride by William Goldman
“Do I love you? My God, if your love were a grain of sand, mine would be a universe of beaches… I have not known a moment in years when the sight of you did not send my heart careening against my rib cage. I have not known a night when your visage did not accompany me to sleep. There has not been a morning when you did not flutter behind my waking eyelids. I love you. Okay? Want it louder? I love you. Spell it out, should I? I ell-oh-vee-ee why-oh-you. Want it backward? You love I…”

Anthony and Stanford, Sex and the City 2
Anthony: It was not exactly love at first sight. But it turns out, it was love. You are the first man to accept me for the man that I actually am.

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë
“I have for the first time found what I can truly love — I have found you. You are my sympathy, my better self, my good angel. I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my center and spring of life, wraps my existences about you. And, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one.”

Meredith and Derek, Grey’s Anatomy
Signed on a Post-It Note By the Couple:
To love each other, even when we hate each other.
No running — ever. Nobody walks out no matter what happens.
Take care when old, senile, smelly.
This is forever.

The Fault in our Stars, by John Green
“I’m in love with you, and I know that love Is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we are all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”
