The 6 Major Issues Brides Had When Changing Their Names

If you plan to change your name after you tie the knot, be warned: It’s not always a seamless process. Here, six brides share the problems that took them by surprise when they went from Ms. to Mrs.

“As a frequent traveler, I had built up rewards under my maiden name — not a ton, but every little bit helps — and it wasn’t as easy as logging into the airline’s user settings and changing my name like I thought it would be. Some of the airlines required mailing in a copy of my marriage certificate, which I didn’t have enough certified copies of because I had to use them for things such as getting a new driver’s license and social security card. I ended up having to sign up for new accounts under my new last name and let some points and rewards go.” — Kristen

“I didn’t want to lose my last name, but I also didn’t want two last names or a hyphenated last name. Instead, I wanted to add a middle name. But rather than do that, the social security employee gave me two last names. I didn’t discover there was a problem until I went to pay my taxes five months later and I didn’t exist. After than debacle, I didn’t try to change my name again until our four-year anniversary.” — Jane

“I had a store credit card, and when I changed my name on it, they refused me credit until I placed my husband’s name on it instead. It was as if I had never existed until I got married. I should have let it alone, but I ended up closing the card because I was furious.” — Carol

“I hyphenated my last name when we married and it is amazing how many websites do not let you hyphenate. You learn over time that airlines prefer that you just run the two names together, but others only work when you leave a space with no hyphen. It is so annoying when you try to type it correctly with the hyphen and it gives you an error message. I guess you just get used to it after a while.” — Paige

“My issue with changing my name was how long all my new credit and debit cards, checks, and things like that took to come in. You have to carry both your old ID and new ID to prove that the credit cards are yours when purchasing something and then show both at the bank. I also found it difficult to change online accounts like PayPal, because they require forms to be submitted to prove name changes.” — June

“Shortly after I changed my name, I lost my new social security card. When I got a new job the following year, I went to the social security office to get another copy. However, they couldn’t give it to me because my new driver’s license had the wrong birthday on it. I hadn’t even noticed. So I had to go through the whole process again because of the DMV’s mistake. It was terrible.” — Lainey

Here's Exactly What You Should Do If You Get Something Stuck In Your Vagina

tampon

Like any hostess worth her salt, your vagina is usually happy to accommodate visitors…as long as they don’t overstay their welcome. But sometimes things get lodged inside the vaginal canal and are so hard to retrieve, it seems like you’ll need the gynecological version of the jaws of life to make things right. It’s like your vagina’s taunting you, saying, “You want this thing out? You’ll have to pry it from my warm, wet walls lol good luck.” Fortunately, if you do lose control of a tampon or wayward condom, there are a few actions you can take to make it easier to remove. And if it comes to it, a medical practitioner can also lend a hand. Either way, rest easy: You won’t have to walk around with this random thing inside of you for the rest of your days.

The most common objects people get stuck in their vaginas are…
…tampons and birth control methods like condoms, diaphragms, and sponges, Alyssa Dweck, M.D., assistant clinical professor of obstetrics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and co-author of V Is For Vagina, tells SELF. The NuvaRing, another form of contraception, and estrogen-providing rings women can use after menopause to relieve issues like vaginal dryness, can also get caught up there, Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale Medical School, tells SELF. “I actually had one woman who came in with three [estrogen] rings because she forgot she hadn’t taken out the previous ones. That’s my personal best,” says Minkin.

And the typical rescue signal is an olfactory one.

While you’ll probably immediately notice that something like a condom or diaphragm has gone MIA, it might take more time to realize a tampon has disappeared into the vaginal ether. Sometimes people simply forget they have one in, or even accidentally put a fresh tampon in on top of an old one. The main tip-off that a tampon’s still hanging around? A persistent odor, says Minkin.

See More: The Best Sex Position For Your Zodiac Sign

You don’t need to worry about a tampon, condom, or other object somehow wandering up through the rest of your body.
Your vagina isn’t an open-ended tube — your cervix is there to make sure things like harmful bacteria and, yes, tampons, condoms, and the like, can’t just travel around willy-nilly. Yes, it opens, like to allow a baby to pass through, but it does a heck of a job preventing things from going the other way. “Something like a condom or tampon is too big to go anywhere besides the vagina,” says Dweck. That said, it’s still in your best interest to get the object out posthaste, especially if it’s a tampon. “Pulling [an old tampon] out is usually treatment enough in and of itself, however with a tampon that’s retained, there’s always a slim chance of toxic shock syndrome,” says Dweck. It’s very rare, with only 26 U.S. women reporting cases of TSS in 2015, but still worth being cautious about.

In terms of actually getting whatever it is out, you have a few options.
“You can do something relaxing like take a warm shower or bath, insert your index finger into the vagina, gently brush around until you feel the foreign body, then try to scoop it out,” says Dweck. Putting some lubricant on your finger might make this easier, she adds. As you feel around, it might help to get into a squatting position and bear down like you’re trying to push it out, says Minkin.

Or you can take your efforts outside of the shower. “Another option, if you have a cooperative partner, is to put your heels up like you’re in a pelvic exam and they can feel around inside your vagina to see if they can grasp this thing,” says Minkin. (This article would be remiss without mentioning the iconic Sex and the City scene in which Samantha proved she was a true ride or die friend by fishing around for Carrie’s stuck diaphragm.)

If the culprit is a condom and you’re able to get it out on your own, breathe a sigh of relief. Then, if you’re not on the Pill (or if you are but you don’t use it perfectly), get your hands on some form of emergency contraception, says Dweck. If you don’t have access to something like the morning after pill but you do have birth control pills, depending on the brand you can use those as emergency contraception instead. And if you don’t know the STI status of the person you were having sex with, Dweck suggests making an appointment with an ob/gyn or other healthcare provider to get STI tests and potentially treatment for infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea, just in case.

Be prepared to call in a professional.
If you can’t get the stuck object out on your own, that’s normal. Sometimes these things are tough to reach because they’re wedged up in the vaginal fornix, which Minkin describes as “little corners behind where the cervix dips down into the vagina.” Know that there is zero shame in seeing a doctor about this. “People get really sheepish, but I guarantee you’re not the only person I’m going to see this month for this. We see it all the time,” says Minkin. And removal is pretty simple — your ob/gyn or nurse practitioner will insert a speculum, then use what basically amounts to a long set of tweezers to pull out whatever’s refusing to budge. Problem solved.

This Bride's Hotel Booked a Fetish Ball On The Same Day As Her Wedding

As brides, we pretty much go to any length to ensure our wedding is absolute Disney-approved perfection. We spend months planning every single wedding detail down to the tee, just so that we can look back on this very special day and think, “Yep, my wedding killed it.” But as you have probably heard by now (either from your mom, aunt, or friends), not everything goes off without a hitch on your big day. From wedding cake disasters to ring mixups to severe weather alerts destroying any hopes of saying your “I do’s” outside, mishaps out of your control are bound to happen. Which brings us to one particularly amused bride who didn’t let the, um, imperfections ruin her wedding day.

In a rather hilarious image posted on Reddit, a bride, who is fully dressed in her white, cap-sleeved gown in front of what appears to be a hotel elevator, is seen smiling next to a couple of odd looking characters. The woman on the left is dressed head-to-toe in skintight latex, showing only her eyes, mouth, and bun of hair on top of her head. On a side note, how is she not sweltering in that thing?! The other person standing to the right of the cheezing bride appears to be wearing a mask of sorts, along with a chain around his neck and some kind of ear appendages on his head. Can you guess what convention these two belong to? A fetish ball, that’s what.

And how exactly did these complete opposites of the spectrum wind up in the same hotel lobby, you ask? Well, according to Reddit, “Sometimes the hotel holding your wedding also has a fetish ball booked.” Awkward. Despite this minor hiccup on her wedding day though, this bride seems to have taken it in stride. Laughter is the best medicine, after all!

A Look Back at Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi's Wedding

Happy anniversary Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi! One of our favorite funny women married the Scandal star 8 years ago in spectacularly understated fashion — setting the tone for intimate weddings to come. Here, we look back on Ellen and Portia’s August 16, 2008 wedding.

The brides chose to forego a traditional big Hollywood wedding and instead had 19 close family and friends to their home to celebrate their wedding (the couple’s beloved dogs included).

For their big day attire, the brides chose custom-made Zac Posen creations. Portia got ahead of the trends in a dress featuring a blush tulle skirt and halter neckline. Ellen went for all white tailored pants and a vest. As they said their wedding vows in front of their closets family and friends, Ellen and Portia exchanged platinum Neil Lane wedding bands — to match Portia’s engagement ring, no doubt.”

Celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss designed the elegant affair — floor pillows and one long table decorated with Ecuadorian roses and dahlias (the work of florist Mark’s Garden) set the tone for the intimate affair. The couple’s personal chef David Silberkleit created a vegan menu for the reception, and L.A.-based bakery Sweet Lady Jane provided the red velvet cake — also vegan. Stevie Wonder’s “Ribbon in the Sky” was the song of choice for the brides’ first dance.

“I’m the luckiest girl in the world,” Ellen told People after the wedding. Portia shared the sentiment, telling People, “I was already planning on spending the rest of my life with her. But until you’re married, you just don’t know. It feels wonderful.” Here’s to many more anniversaries for this adorable couple.

BRIDES' 30 Day Wedding Shape-Up Challenge: Day 16, Turn Your Cardio Routine On Its Head

Wedding Cardio Workout

Photo: Getty Images

This is it… The final countdown to your big day. And along with settling those last few details — figuring out where to seat your eccentric Uncle Carl, firming up the flowers — you’re likely also making one last push to make sure the body that will be wearing that gorgeous white gown looks as good as it possibly can. You and nearly every other woman with an engagement ring on her finger. In fact, research shows that an overwhelming 91 percent of brides-to-be are anxious about their weight. But from here on out, you won’t have to be!

Whether you want to drop those last few pounds or look more toned — or both — we’ve got a month’s worth of daily tips (none of which require starving yourself or working out nonstop!) that will help you feel stunning and confident when you walk down that aisle. You know where to send the thank-you card. Let’s get started!

Day 16: Turn Your Cardio Routine On Its Head

A few weeks before the big day — that would be now! — experts recommend swapping your high-intensity interval (HIIT) workouts for low-intensity, steady-state ones (or LISS, for short). Think: A longer workout that you do at a single, less strenuous pace — like a 40 to 45 minute brisk walk, or a leisurely bike ride.

Why? “Even though HIIT workouts burn more calories in less time, LISS cardio burns more fat, which can promote leanness during those last few weeks,” says Pete McCall, an exercise physiologist and personal trainer in San Diego.

“LISS is also easier on your body. The last thing you want right before your wedding is to be over-trained, which can happen if you do HIIT workouts for long periods of time.” There’s also something to be said for doing a more relaxing form of exercise right about now, when all the last-minute details you’re dealing with are creating boatloads of stress.

So grab the dog and go for a nice, long walk. You’ll come back refreshed and glowing.

8 Superfoods to Eat the Week of Your Wedding

vanilla oatmeal

Photo: Getty Images

While one of the top things you can do the week of your wedding is get some quality rest and relaxation, the other thing you should do is try to eat as healthy as possible. Skip the crash diets and the juice cleanses and instead eat food that’ll help keep your body functioning at a high level and build up your immunity so you can fight off sleepless nights and stressful last-minute moments along the way. If you’re wondering what you should eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, consider incorporating these 8 superfoods into your meal plan the week of your wedding.

1. Avocados
Enjoy a piece of Avocado toast or add Avocado to a lunchtime pre-wedding salad because Avocados are filled with healthy fats and are loaded with fiber, which will help you feel full longer.

2. Sweet Potatoes
Whether baked or grilled, having a handful of sweet potatoes are a great way to eat a low-calorie snack that’s packed with antioxidants. They are a superfood because they are a great source of carbohydrates and also because they help regulate your blood sugar levels.

3. Tea
Swap out the soda pop and the cups of coffee for tea. Tea is a great way to detox your body from toxins and a great way to get antioxidants and vitamins. Plus, it helps burn fat too.

4. Spinach
Spinach is arguably one of the healthiest superfoods because it contains so many antioxidants and vitamins. You’ll get a great serving of iron and be able to store up a lot of energy for the big week ahead.

5. Berries
Get your hands on those berries, whether they are raspberries, strawberries or even blueberries. Berries are packed with antioxidants, potassium and vitamin C. The other main benefit is berries contain high-levels of fiber, which make you feel full longer.

6. Dried Apricots
A great mid-day snack that lets you have a full dose of iron and fiber for the day. Mix a handful or two of dried apricots with almonds and raisins and you have a great bag of trail mix to munch on throughout the day.

7. Eggs

Add eggs into your morning ritual since they are a great way to get protein and amino acids, helping you gain a boost of energy. Plus, they have vitamin D, which is so important for bone health.

8. Oatmeal
If you’re wondering whether to reach for a bagel and cream cheese or a bowl of hot oatmeal the morning of your wedding, choose the latter. Oatmeal will regulate your blood-sugar levels, having them rise slowly and stay even for a long period of time. This is especially important to have happen on a day when you’re running around and dealing with moments of anxiety and stress.

How to Protect Your Guests from Zika at an Outdoor Wedding

Zika Tips Outdoor Weddings

Photo: Getty Images

Zika virus mosquitos are popping up in a whole lot of places right now, and depending on where you’re getting married, there are various levels of alert being issued by the CDC and local health departments. As with any potential health hazard, people are panicking.

But unless engaged couples just steer clear of hosting outdoor weddings all together (or at least for the next couple of years), we simply have to make the best preparations possible at weddings to protect the wedding party, the wedding guests, and the staff against mosquitoes.

I plan a lot of destination weddings in Puerto Rico, where everyone has been on high alert for Zika for the past eight months. As a result, I’d like to think I’ve become a bit of a pro at mosquito preparedness for outside weddings. Keep it safe at your wedding, and follow these five tips:

1. Patrol your venue a couple weeks before your wedding, if possible.
If you’re not getting married in your hometown, ask your wedding planner to do it for you. Take a look at the property and make sure there’s no standing water, dead fountains, or other typical breeding grounds for mosquitos. If you find there is a big problem, notify the management immediately. A serious mosquito infestation isn’t something you can solve if you discover it the day of the wedding.

2. Arm your wedding guests with bug repellant.
Put them in the guests’ welcome bags at their accommodations. Wipes, or spray bottles, or other cool gadgets you find will be appreciated and will get used. Urge everybody to wear the bug repellant whether or not your wedding events are being held outside. They’re walking around outside before and after, right?

3. Put cans of bug repellant in visible spots throughout your outdoor wedding venue.
The bar is one place that everybody will see it. I’ve also seen small pump tubes of bug repellant that kind of looked like the bubble tubes you see at wedding. Those look cute with bows around them in a basket in the bathrooms at the wedding reception venue.

4. Burn citronella candles or citronella tiki oil around the perimeter of your event area.
Don’t just use them in the mix as part of your décor (besides, the candles smell pretty distinctively horrible, and you’re better off having them away from the food). Literally enclose your exterior space in a ring of protection. Might sound silly to you, but we’ve been doing it for years with outdoor weddings in the Caribbean and it’s very, very effective.

5. Get mosquito-repelling bracelets for your wedding party.
This is especially helpful if you’re planning to make them tramp around a golf course, or in the woods, or on a beach for wedding photos in the late afternoon or at dusk. Traditionally, they’re going to do a lot of standing around. Best to avoid having them eaten alive in the process.

6 Expert Honeymoon Safety Tips You Need to Know About

Overseas Honeymoon Safety Tips

Photo: Getty Images

Your bags are packed, you’re ready to go…But one more thing! Before you head to the airport for your honeymoon, take safety into consideration. Here, the expert honeymoon safety tips you need to be aware of, you’ll be glad to be prepared and confident as you set off on the trip of a lifetime. Bon voyage!

Use Credit Cards
Most people use plastic over paper these days anyway, but it’s essential during travel. Not only do many credit card companies offer special travel protection features, it beats carrying cash for safety and insurance reasons, too. Carry just enough cash for tips, or the off-chance occasion you need to purchase something where credit cards are not welcome. Be sure to also always opt for credit over debit — especially if your debit accounts are chock-full of post-wedding cash. Besides, earning points for all your travel purchases sweetens the deal — just be sure to select a card with no travel fees!

Reconsider Novelty Items
Sure, the Mr. & Mrs. matching tees, “Just Married” passport covers, and “Wifey” cover-ups are adorable, thoughtful, and you’ve definitely earned them, but those who choose to be SUPER cautious may want to rethink wearing them around town. Some travel experts warn that these items are an advertisement to pickpockets or thieves that you may have new money in your accounts, and new jewelry on your fingers.

Make Copies
Make copies of your passports, and have whomever isn’t carrying the actual passports carry the copies. This will come in handy if (gasp!) you misplace your passport during travel, as they’re as good as gold overseas. It can also pay to make note of where the nearest US Embassy is in case you do lose them. Trust us, most times in foreign countries your beloved drivers license just won’t cut it. You can leave the original passports in your room safe, and carry the copies as identification during your excursions, you’ll also need the copies for tourist tax benefits on larger purchases.

Utilize the Safe
Nearly every hotel we can think of has disclaimers posted that they are not responsible for lost, or stolen items. Because of this — and general safety concerns — be certain to utilize your hotel room’s safe. Make the combination something unique and personal to you as a couple — but avoiding birthdays and wedding dates. Whenever you leave the room, all cash, jewelry, passports, and other forms of ID should be placed in the safe. If your room does not have a safe, ask at the front desk if they have safety deposit options to rent for your stay for another secure option.

Think Before You Pack
As tempting as it is to pack your best dresses, bags, shoes and baubles, you might want to reconsider. Many brides opt to leave their new bling behind as a safety precaution, while others won’t leave the house without it. Consider that many European countries have issues with pickpockets, and also you may be spending lots of time at the beach or pool. So if you’re the type to err on the side of caution, it’s best to leave it at home in a safety deposit box, or with a relative. If you do decide to bring it with you, make sure it’s insured to be extra safe.

Emergency Contacts
Not to sound like your mother, but you should share your itinerary (as specific as possible!) with at least one other person staying back in the states. This should have hotel names, dates, flight details, and any other information you think is important. It’s not too difficult to keep in touch these days, regardless of location — thanks to the genius that is WiFi — but you can never be too careful. (Trust us — it will keep your parents happy, too!)
